Period 2

Tyson Kozak gets 2 for cross-checking.
Comets to the PP at 2:18.
Best effort on the Comets PP was a shorthanded breakaway by Graham Slaggert and Daws came up big once again. he has been the difference so far.

Comets have given up 4-star chances to the Amerks and Daws continues to stymie them. SOG are 15-6 in the game and the Comets haven't got a shot in the period, Amerks have 5 and a s**t load of shots that have gone wide, been deflected, or blocked.

Hardman at the bottom of the right circle shoots and it slides under the pad.
ITS I-n--n--n-n-n-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hardman (4) from Casey (12) and Beckman (6)
6:59
2-0

Alekksandr Kisakoff 2 for for hooking.
8:14
Comets going to the PP again.

Halonen (7 )from Nemec (1) and Willman (3) PP
9:56
Nemec's 1st point since his arrival.
3-0

Misyul off for holding at 10:37.
PK successful.

Legare picks up a loos puck 10 feet inside his own blueline and races up the right side. it ends up a 2on1 with Engarasbut 3 Mmerks are nipping at their heels. Legare speeds ahead and between the dot and the top of the circle rips a wicked wrister and ..........

S--------C---------O--------R----------E-------S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Legare beat the keeper to the far side high oover his blocker.
blocker side
Legare (2) from Vilen (2)
15:24
4-0

Goalie change Michael Houser comes on to replace Felix Sandstrom.

Gambardella gets in alone and the puck hops over his stick as he drags it in front of Houser.

From 18:02 - 19:21 the Amerks put 5 good scoring chances on Daws. Nico was up to the task 3X with his glove and 2 with the pads.
Comets didn't like the aftermath in front on the last Daws stop. The results were Misyul and Tyson Kozak dropping the mittts and going toe to toe. Misyul landed 3 rights in a row and the linesmen jumped in to end it.

5 each for fighting at 19:21.

Period 2 ends
4-0 Comets
SOG:
17-11 Rochester
2-period total
27-17 Rochester

Last night the Devils had to kill a 5-minute major with 7+ minutes to go and holding on to a 4-2 lead. Justin Dowling was sent to the box to serve Timo Meier's cross checking major and game misconduct. The Devils were fantastic allowing only one SOG while killing it off with the last part of it a 6 on 4. When it was killed, Dowling came out of the box and scored into the empty net putting the final nail in the predators coffin and icing the game for the devils at 5-2.

Congrats to Justin. It was the 8th goal of his 112 NHL GP over the course of his 14-yr professional career.

Here's another brilliant move by whomever the Bozo is who makes them for Utica.

Andy Welinski was released from his AHL PTO.

The next move made to make up for his absence was to bring Jackson van de Leest up from Adirondack to take his place.

Welinski wasn't causing any problem and was a very capable fill-in if any D-man needed filling in for. Van de Leest doesn't come close to that definition. The Comets are not in trouble VET wise so that's not an issue.

Unless Andy has a deal for the next stop on his floundering career, this move was foolish at best. They traded out a competent #7 for an ECHL meh D-man who can't skate at the AHL level. When he and MacKinnon were both in the Comets lineup at the same time last season the results were not good. Will, for whatever the reason (choke! choke!), has become a regular game night player. Thus, have to pray nobody in that 6 goes down because Jackson is now #7.

I sincerely hope Andy's agent got him better than a PTO somewhere. Otherwise this was a move made based upon NOTHING of value.

The work Fitz and MacKinnon have done in Utica leaves a lot to be desired. They've got Nemec and Casey down there. Those guys need to progress this year. Plus Daws and Poulter - would be nice if one of them could break through.

Utica doesn't need to be Calder Cup contenders, but I don't think it's good for anyone's development if Utica is a tire fire.

I'm not sure what can be done right now. I see Rem Pitlick posting random stuff on Instagram. I don't think he's signed, but not sure if he's called a career or what. He'd be a good VE. Perhaps an AHL trade? You'd think they'd be beating the bushes for some sort of solution.

An update on the Welinski release from his PTO on Tuesday.

Coach Parent said they gave him his release. He believes Andy was able to "find another opportunity" but he didn't say where.

Best of luck, Andy. You weren't given much of a chance here as LD Will MacKinnon played the right side ahead of you.

@tailfins Pitlick does not have a contract. Unless he has suffered a debilitating injury there doesn't seem to be any reason for him to be out of work. He has put up 55G/70A/125 Pts in 148 AHL GP in 4 seasons. He is a 7-yr pro who has also amassed 132 games in the NHL with Nashville, Minnesota, Montreal, and Chicago recording an accumulated .41 PPG.

Dowling is Utica's best with a .71 PPG over 14 seasons. He's in NJ.
Ryan Schmelzer has posted a .51 over 7 seasons. This makes Ryan #1 once again as has occurred in every single one of the past 3 seasons. Ryan is a top notch #3 AHL center and he busts his nuts trying to pick up the slack whenn elevated, but #1 is over his paygrade. Have to love the load this guy tries to shoulder. There's a reason why he is the Captain!
Bowers .36 PPG over 7 seasons. Has played onn the wing here in a lot of games.
Engaras .19 in limited appearances over 4 seasons. He is #4 at best, but has playd a lot of #3 due the dearth of centers.
Malone .08 PPG in 13 GP this season as a rookie professional. He is no better than a #4 and is really in need of some pro time at the ECHL level.
No other player currently in Utica has been used as a regular center.

These numbers further illustrate the dire need for centers for New Jersey's farm team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the guy is available Fitz, F**king go get him yesterday. With DeSimone back in NJ and Welinski released the Comets have 4 VETSs by AHL rules in their lineup. His games played would make him their 5th, which is the league maximium allowed in a game. He goes right into the lineup with no disruptions.

I believe I'm barking up a tree as I have no influence and NJ doesn't seem to be concerned or they would have already done something by now.

Providence Bruins @ Utica Comets

Forwards:
(79) Laberge (16) Engaras (11) Legare
(5) Gambardella (26) Schmelzer (24)
(39) Hardman (67) Parent (34) Hardman
(20) Willman (13) Malone (48) Bertuzzi

D-Pairs:
(6) White (17) Nemec
(83) Vilen (22) Casey
(93) Misyul (3) MacKinnon

Period 1
The Comets came out a bit slow and surrendered the 1st goal of the game at 2:07. it was their 3rd shot on goal.
1-0 Bruins

The Comets got their act together and played hard to move the puck against. They kept putting pressure on the Bruins ,but got few shots on net, but Gambardella tied it up at 10:18 putting home a rebound off a Schmelzer shot to tie it at 1. It was the Comets 3rd shot and the SOG were 8-3 , but the score was
1-1

At 14:51 Malone came off the bench and skated hard across the Bruin blue line and walked into reaching 1 timer slap shot on the fly that went high blocker side to make it 2-1 Comets.
The period came to an end with Daws making 3 stops inside the last minute.

End of the 1st
2-1 Comets

SOG:
14-6 Providence

Period 2
No scoring
End of the 2nd

SOG:
12-4 Utica
2 period total:
18-18

Period 3
The Bruins tied the game at 4:42
2-2

The Xaier Parent took a pass at center ice after the ensuing faceoff, which he won. He raced down the wing into the Providnece zone and ripped a wicked wrister from the top of the circle to put the Comets back on top at 4:59.
3-2 Comets

Utica continued to pressure and the puck squirted out towards the left point and Vilen stepped into it inside the left face off circle and dented the twines for his 1st of the year.
4-2 Comets.

The Bruins tried to turn it up and pulled their keeper at 17:20. 30 seconds later Hardman tapped in an empty netter to give the Comets a 3-goal lead at 17:50.
5-3 Comets.

The Comets tried to play shut down fir the last 2:10 and it was chaos in their own end. Like the last game Daws surrendered a goal in the last 10 seconds. This time on a long wrist shot from the boards out near the blueline.
5-3 Comets.

End of the 3rd
SOG:
9-6 Providence

Not to sound like that guy, but Nolan Foote gets promoted and Devils get shutout while Comets score five goals and get first win of the year.

Coincidence?

Providensc Bruins @ Utica Comets

Final score:
Utica 5 Providence 3

SOG:
PRO - 14 4 9 = 27
UTC - 6 12 6 = 24

Scoring:
Gambardella (1) from Schmelzer (3) and Halonen (3)
Malone (2) from Beckman (7) and Hardman (2)
Parent (1) from Hardman (3) and White (7)
Vilen (1) from Beckman (8) and Engaras (2)
Hardman (5) from Vilen (3)

Daws - 27 SA/ 3GA/ 24 SVS

It was a night of 1st goals:
Gambardella in his 4th GP. + 1A + 2Pts
Parent in his 5th GP. + 2A = 3Pts
Vilen in his 10th GP. + 3A = 4Pts

Hardman after missing 8 games with a hip flexor and an injury to an AC in his shoulder had a big weekend with 4 goals and an assist earning him AHL forward of the week honors. He followed that up tonight with 1 goal and 2 more assists. For those having trouble with math that's 5G/3A for 8Pts. After having gone pointless in his first 5 games, these 3 games have given him 8 PTs in 8GP and moved him into a tie for 5th place in Comets scoring.

Casey was shut out tonight but he still leads the Comets in points with 13 in 12GP. #1

Beckman's 2 assists have given him 11Pts in 11GP. #2

Halonen picked up an assist to give him 10Pts in 16GP. #3

Foote is in NJ, but still sits with 9Pts in 12GP.

Aside from White's 8Pts in 16GPwhich has him tied for 5th with Hardman the Comets individual scoring drops off very fast.

Misyul and Mackinnon who play as a pair are pointless for the season. Misyul is in a tough spot trying to carry Will.
Laberge joins them also with 0PTS.
And Bertuzzi now with 6GP is also pointless.
Filmon (Adir) also had failed to hit the scoresheet in 8GP.

Welinski (released) was 1Pt in 8GP.
Nemec 1Pt/7GP
Diotte (Adir) 1Pt/5GP

DeSimone (NJ) 2Pts in 9GP
Wendt (Adir) 2Pts in 5GP
Stillman 2Pts in 14GP
Legare 2Pts 16GP (both goals)
Malone 2 PTs in 13GP (both goals)
Gambardella 2Pts in 4GP (just back from preseason knee surgery)

Bowers 3Pts in 13GP
Engaras 3Pts in 8GP
Parent 3Pts in 5GP (just back from preseason foot injury)

Willman 4Pts in 16GP
Vilen 4Pts in 10GP
Dowling (in NJ) 4Pts in 6GP

Schmelzer 5Pts in 16GP

The Comets key reason for their 3 game streak has been a commitment to hounding the puck. Wherever it goes to an opponent that guy is picked up almost, if not as soon, as the puck arrives. They are bodying their checks.

They are also head manning the puck whenever possible. It's quick passes with what seems to be coached patterns all the way up the ice. It has given them control of the puck much better than the previous debacle. I think Parent is having an effect on their play.

I also think the return of Parent and Gambardella has been a boost to their intensity.

The line of Hardman and Beckman centered by Parent has breathed a level of success that seems to be catching on with the rest of them.
They have a renewed energy.
They are playing with confidence they neer showed under DiNeen.
Being behind or giving up a lead hasn't caused them to deflate as they did almost every game with DiNeen.
This is still not a good hockey team, but they can give any team they come up against a game if they play with this intensity.
It reminds me of Green's teams in Utica. They played a system that is very hard to maintain for long periods of time. Attack trhe puck all over the ice. Don't give your opponent an inch to breath, In your face hockey. It's a system that works for as long as a full team can keep it up. It works for short spurts, a few games. Then they burn out and games are lost untill they get a break in the schedule, refuel and go on the attack again. They have to believe in the system, believe in each other, and believe in themselves. It is an exhausting procedure, but it can win alot of games. The question was always will it win enough and can they remain healthy enough to make it through a long season. Injuries can kill things very quickly as incoming ECHL players have a hard time adjusting to the game.

It's fun right now, but you have to wonder if it's a real thing or just a little spurt before the bottom drops out again. Schmelzer left during the 3rd period, He was hurt earlier and struggled to get to the bench. He returned to action and looked okay, but somethin g wasn't right and he left. I didn't see him come back. They need him. Right now the center position is being held together with kite string and if he's out Parent, who has been a huge inspiration in the middle in the last 3 contests, is all that's left. Engaras nad Malone are playing their best, but it won't be enough to carry the load.

Their curent roster is 1 extra D - Jackson van de Leest up from Adir.
2 extra forwards scratched tonight:
- Jace Isley up from Adir
- Chase Stillman. Don't know why he was out. Healthy scracth or injured, but his replacement was Tag Bertuzzi up from Adir.

This roster is as thin as tissue paper and has quite a bit of cheap wrapping paper already playing.
We'll take what we see for now, as it beats what we had before the DiNeen firing. It took Parent a few games to put his stamp on the team, but so far it's been an improvement.

FITZ, MAC, and whomever else exists with the power PLEASE do something to help these guys out. Why is no team going after Rem Pitlik? Is he hurt? Is he poison? Has he hung 'em up? The guy has great AHL numbers and is an unsigned 27-yr-old CENTER!!!!!!
