2024-25 Utica Comets and ECHL thread

Period 3
Amerks are packing it in and the Comets can't get a shot anywhere near Levi. Comets don't have the skill to work the puck around and/or through the cluster.

White to the sin bin at 3:48 for Tripping. Amerks get 1 here and you can mail the loss in.
Comets PK is a static box. Amerks moving the puck at will vs no pressure. There's a reason their PK is #31 in a league of 32.
They killed it or maybe I should sat the Amerks failed.

12:27 to go and the Comets haven't even challenged Levi once tonight. If it stays this way, I bet he gets the 1st star for one of the easiest game night he's ever had.

Amerk fans can get a free cup of Coffee

Whoa! The Comets score! Hardman crossed through the crease with the puck and shot it back for the goal.
8:44
3-1 Amerks

Right off the ensuing faceoff, Schmelzer and Hardman get a 2 on 1, but Levi stops Schmelzer after a pass from Hardman. Basically a replay of their 1st period 2 on 1, but this time they got a good scoring chance..

Laberge and Brendan Warren square off and both struggle to land one and suddenly Sam lands a huge right, but Warren took it and got his hand loose for a couple of side of the helmet hits. They get separated by the LM.

Parent had a top half of the net open on a turnover and Levi came at him low to the ice and defelcted the shot with his glove as it came off X's stick.

Now Rathbone gets called for Hooking at 12:30. Comets to the PP.

Comets cannot hold possesion and it's cleared out twice. The Comets come up empty and there's only 5+ left in the 3rd.
A team needing to score multiple goals has mustered a meager 5 shots on goal at this point.

Comets try to get Poulter off the ice, but the Amerks waste 1:30 in the Comets end playing keep away. He finally gets off with 18:36 to go and the Comets muster nothing 6 on 5. Amerks miss the open net 3 times, but don't ice it.

Comets finally get in and Foote shoots. Hardman redirects from directly in front from the low slot. Too little too late as the goal comes with 10 seconds left on the clock. Hardman gets his 2nd of the night.
19:51
3-2 Rochester.

I can't get excited here.
Comets ice it off the faceoff! 5 seconds left and this one is over.
Comets streak ends at 5.

3rd period SOG:
7-6 Utica

Final:
Rochester 3 Utica 2

SOG:
UTC - 8 8 7 = 23
ROC - 9 8 6 = 23

PP:
UTC - 0/2
ROC - 0/2

Scoring:
Hardman (6) from Parent (3) and Beckman (10)
Haerman (7) from Foote (6) and Schmelzer (6)

Poulter 20/23

3***s
#3 - Mike hardman (Utica Comets) 2 G
#2 - Brett Murray (Rochester Americans) 1 GWG/1 A
#1 - Riley Fiddler-Schultz (Rochester Americans) 1 G/1 A

Next up for the Comets is Friday night at the Utica Aud vs the Providence Bruins.

I'd like to believe we're telling him to be more active offensively and work on his offense...because the alternative is that he's short-circuited and is now a broke man's Severson
If it's what he did last season, he'd sneak down low from the point when he saw an opportunity. that probably only works in connection with a system that covers for that.

Those tweets/posts about Nemec seem unnecessarily scathing. Kind of odd it comes from someone set close to the team.Yeah she writes for the athletic or whatever, but she is covering closely our teams, and she came out with the daggers out of the blue.

Is that some sort of hit job? The writing implies he is just doing random bullshit and leaving his position. She posted the same on,X the other day but I had trouble visualizing the plays the way it was worded. So he pinched and got caught twice, 3 times? Or he just randomally abandoned the play to cause 2 on 1s, lol.

I also was thinking, maybe coach was giving him the green light to generate something on Offense, particularly after being a goal or 2 down.

Nemec definitely hasn't looked the same from last year up in NHL, but I had originally chalked it up to his very recent injury and maybe he was still playing damaged, hurt or whatever. The one trait I remember from Nemec coming into 23-24 after a year in the A was that he was very confident (to cocky) about being NHL ready. Maybe he is feeling slighted by the team dumping him down there, lol

(Probably need to dig up the Nemec thread if we going to have a big convo on him..)

Without watching or knowing what his microstats are, I really can't say (and most of us can't) how Nemec is doing down there.

Not sure how much Kristi watches Utica. If she just catches bits and pieces of games then yea that's a harsh assertion. But again, no idea how much she watches.

Looking at his stats he has 3 points in 10 games and is a +2. So doesn't seem bad without any context of course.

I know I was getting pretty frustrated with his reckless defensive play in the NHL, so that might explain her tone if he's still doing that shit in the AHL.

It was really hard watching him leave Casey out to dry 2-3 times a night.

I hope you are not posting his stats as a sign of good work of good work.

Casey has played 15 games. He has 15 points and is also a +2. Casey takes care of business in both ends. He takes the puck on his own in the O-zone and looks to set someone up and or shoots the puck almost always on goal. However, when he goes deep he also seems to get back defensively not causing Misyul (his usual partner to have to take on the rush without him. This is not a consistent description of Nemec when he goes on the offense. He is much more apt to go rogue.

Casey is also working very hard at taking on net front hangers with physicality in spite of his size differential. Nemec does not try to be physical. In fact he is more oftten on the end of physicality.

Casey wins a lot of board battles or at least holds on until he gets help. He is masterful at avoiding the fore check when he has the puck and getting passes up the ice in those situations. Often he ends up coming away from the checker and skating the puck into open space and either headmans it from there or actually leads the rush until he has a mate in a better position whom he passes it to or carries it in and may go all the way to the goal line always looking to pass or dumps it deep if he doesn't have space to penetrate the zone and doesn't have pen help. He doesn't try to force passes. He has been playing a safe offensive game since he got here.

Last season when he got sent down for a bit, he acted bitch slapped. It was like he felt he didn't belong here. That attitude came with him again. However, I don't think it has lasted, but his work ethic could still be better. He is not the best guy on the ice, but often attempts things that only the best guy could actually pull off. He will make dumb passes that sitting in the stands I know he is going to attempt and silently beg him not to do. That leads to turnovers and often serious goal chances for the opponent. He causes his keeper to come up big when it never had to happen. Like I said, Casey plays it safe in nhis end. His goal is to get the puck going the other way, like a good D-man does.

I really hope Fitz holds onto this kid. His attitude is nothing but positive about being here. He has stated he knows NJ has a very good D. He needs to do everything he can to improve every aspect of his game while working hard at what he wasn't doing so well in NJ while he was there. He is working extra hard to accomplish what NJ told him he has to do to be an NHL D-man.

Nemec on the other hand seems to play like he thinks he's got it all covered. I think he needs to mature. He has always been the man in his country, especially in international competition. He's not used to taking a back seat and he's not the man in the NHL by a long shot.

NJ has 2 very young outstanding NHL D-prospects in Casey and Nemec. Both will turn 21 in the 1st 2 months of 2025. If they can keep their heads on straight and bide their time, the NHL is in their future. Right now, Casey is playing that way. Nemec often does not.

No I haven't watched at all. As I said, I posted without context. Thanks for sharing your thoughts (I was waiting for you to jump in lol). I hope Nemec gets his head out of his ass. Glad to hear Casey is impressing and playing well.

I'm guessing Nemec took it hard when he was demoted after spending so much of last season in the NHL. Then layer in the shoulder injury and having to learn a new system and he's probably having that sort of sophomore season he'd rather forget. He didn't seem like a bad kid last season so I expect at some point he will figure it out.

They closed the thread we were posting on and I wanted to add this. That US team was made up of true amateurs who would go back to their businesses, jobs and normal lives. They would not be remembered by many folks beyond hockey diehards in a very short passage of time. Only 2 would play in the NHL. Tommy Williams would be the only member to go on to a successful NHL career. He was the only American in the NHL when he played for Boston in 1960. He would become the first American to ever score 20 goals in the NHL. He played in 13 NHL seasons, 161G/269A/430Pts/663GP. 8 of those seasons were with Boston. He also played with Minnesota, California, and Washington. He played 2 WHA (31G/58/A/89Pts/139GP) seasons before returning to play with Washington in his last 2 seasons.

I pretended to be Jack MCartan for several years in our neighborhood boot hockey play. McCartan was the only other member of the team to play any games in the NHL. He played 12 NHL games.

That gold medal team was as important to me as the 1980 victory, although the 1980 team was even more unbelievable based upon how far the rest of the world had progressed, especially Russia. Then there was Sweden, Finland , and The Czechs. Don't forget the Canadians who were also a world power. The Us was just a bunch of kids in comparison. Incidentally that team was coached by herb Brooks, who was the last player cut from the 1960 team.

The 1980 team was much more talented in retrospect than given credit for at the time. Broten Johnson Christian Morrow Ramsey all had long NHL careers. A number of guys at least played meaningful amounts of time in the NHL

5 vs 1. That was my point. The 1960 team was true amateurs while the 1980 team wss heavily laden with NCAA Div I hockey players looking to make it to the pros. However, have you looked at that Russian lineup? That team was stacked with veteran level top notch players.

Any of these names sound familiar?
Fetisov
Vasliliev
Kasatonov
Kharlamov
Krutov
Makarov
Maltsev
Mikhailov
Tretiak

Many already veteran players before later on ending their careers with successful roles in the NHL. I don't think many would give any NCAA all-star teams over the next few decades the odds of beating that team. The NHL All-Stars had everything they could handle against most of that same team. The Summit series went 8 games and the NHL won 4 games to 3 with a tie. The 1980 team likely loses to that Russian team much like they did in a pre-olympics exhibition where they were run out of the building.

If you go back and watch Miracle they make it sound like the only Russian player that game was Fetisov

Comets looked like the early Comets. Could not penetrate the O zoneenough to evn get a shot attempt over and over all game long. Fumbled pucks all over the rink. Sometimes as many as 3 and once 4 guys tried to clear the puck out of the zone 10 feet from the blueline and not one effort even got to the blueline and some of those efforts were whiffs or pucks into their mates' or the opponents skates or equipment. It was so frustrating to see the Bruins make 3 passes while skating hard and they were out of their zone. The Comets couldn't make a"A" pass that enabled them to start up ice. In many instances their rushes didn't get to center ice before the puck was either carried or shot right back in. In the O zone they passed to no one, hit Bruins, passed the puck out of the zone themselves, misfired or missed the net on good chances. Most shifts were exercises in futility. I mean 4 SOG in the 1st and then 5 in the 3rd pretty much backs all of this up.

Their PK is terrible.
The 1st PPG came 27 seconds after it started.
The 2nd was just pure ridiculous. Exactly 6 seconds after the puck was dropped to start the PP!

They didn't pressure the puck anywhere. The Bruins moved it around, across, in and out, back and forth and shot from crazy good spots. The Comets didn't block hardly any shots, deflect any passes, knock anyone off the puck, and left someone somewhere at the net front uncovered.
They got the puck out when a Bruins shot missed the net and landed in front of a Comet or one of their many passes bounced off one of their sticks and a Comet could slap at it.
Bowers has a short handed breakaway and shot the puck directly into the keeper's glove. He never moved it. He took a stance and form close in the puck went right into the glove and the keeper hadn't moved. Poulter was the only reason they killed 4 of the 6 PPs Providence was awarded.

Next up for the Comets is 12/14 in Syracuse. 7 days for Parent to find something that works.

My wife saw the 6 0'clock news and the sports section had a piece on the Comets. She couldn't remember who (hey, I'm amazed she even paid attention to it), but h it was a player who said they were improving since Parent took over because they were learning some skills!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? I have said they were lacking simple hockey skillsets, but to hear an American Hockey League player talk about learning skills was something I would never have mentioned to a reporter if I was him. That just blows my mind, but hats off to Parent for getting down to basics. It also says DiNeen was even worse at coaching than I thought he was.

Nothing about this strikes me as shocking at all. The descriptions of their play is always what I've seen from them as well and Nemec has struck me as someone that can be a bit pissy while Casey seems like the best kid. Would have no issues moving on from Nemec if Kovy keeps up his play and you can re-sign him.

With Tyler Brennan getting called up to Utica, Adirondack is giving their enormous rookie goalie his 1st pro-start.

David Fessenden is a 26 year old signed out of Canisius College listed at 6’6” 255.

And the Thunder win it 3-2 in OT! The big boy in goal made 40 saves!

Comets getting some help?

Filmon and Wendt have been recalled. Either somebody is hurt for awhile, somebody is going up, or Parent is not satisfied with the efforts of some playing here at the moment. That would be great if we didn't know how those 2 played when they were here. Parent knew that when they went down so I doubt he thinks these 2 will do anything to improve the Comets as is. 100% uninspiring.

Maybe the Thunder did something to improve them? HAH!

If you haven't read it yet, there is a great book about the team that won silver in Japan in 1972. Robbie Ftorek and Mark Howe were still in high school and a few others had pro careers; though none as impressive as Broten, Ramsey, Morrow and some of the others on the 1980 team.
