Dach and Copp?

Some of you have gone mad LOL.

I'm honestly not sure he's all that much better. Dach could be likely more useful on that line if he could stay healthy.
if it's even a question of who is better then what is the point in trading to get him? we need an actual upgrade and not waste assets on a question mark

lets just break this down a little... montreal's biggest need is a 2C, our biggest need is a 2C, if dach was an actual 2C then why would mtl trade him?

I don't see Dach as a C at this point. I see him as a potential Vilardi type winger on line 2. I think his size and speed would serve better as a forechecking winger that can play along the boards and work a cycle.

If Fly leaves I wouldn't be opposed to having him as a RW on line 2. We'd still need to find a 2C or use Namestnikov there.

"beggers can't be choosers" towards non upgrades like copp/dach which would even cost an asset to get but getting a player for free who has ACTUALLY been a 2C is a no...

I think most of us are looking for a long term answer and hoping to strike gold on the change of scenery market (Dach) and not likely overpay a vet long term (Nelson) whose likely only going to give us a good season or two before falling off.

He's going to be 34 heading into next season, he's already starting to trail off and he looked absolutely dreadful with Colorado. He's probably going to want at least a 5-6 year deal at like $8m+. That could handicap us and bite us in the ass as soon as next season. Dach likely won't cost much to acquire and if he works out great and if not you keep searching.

Adding some size to that line probably couldn't hurt, whether you do it from the wings or C. But I would not give up much to get him.

@ps241 outlined this in another thread, but the areas where i always felt the Jets could take advantage of is those players such as Stephenson, Karlsson, i'll add Toews, Marino of yester-years, McCann, and a whole wack of FLA players such as Carter V, G. Forsling, Mason Marchment, Montour and probably a lot of other players around the league over the years

Jets kind of did that with Demelo, who many online were labeling him an analytics darling in 2019, and was performing well in a variety of roles for Ottawa at the time. Jets get him for a 3rd, and has been a big upgrade at top-pair given what was trotted out there post-Trouba.

The UFA list at C is: Tavares, Giroux, Nelson, Gourde, Granlund, Dvorak, Bennett, Duchene, and a whole lotta meh or worse. who of the group would you pay a UFA style contract to?

That'd be a consideration for getting a strong 2C or strong 2W. Who that is :dunno:.

Tavares probably takes a discount to stay in Toronto. I've heard Giroux wants to stay in Ottawa. Nelson is likely looking for a 5-6 year deal. Gourde has fallen off a bit. Grandlund still has some game in him, not sure if he'll get a decent contract based on his play this playoffs. Toews could be worth a PTO to see what he's got if he comes back. Bennett is going to get paid a lot,

All in all pretty much just Granlund. But I think he'll likely get a lot of money from a team like Carolina.

lol, "beggers can't be choosers" when posting about 2 guys who have never proven capable of being a 2C but when one could actually be available you ignore that and go over the reasons why we shouldn't...

no shit everyone would prefer a long term answer, but who is there? copp/dach are desperation adds that' wouldn't even be an upgrade on what we have and would cost assests to get, we've been looking for years and still can't find anyone... so if majority of the league...

if you are going to use the line "beggers can't be choosers" at least use it on the player that actually has proven to be a 2C with warts not guys who haven't proven to be better then names

You assume that Nelson is willing to even entertain signing here to begin with. We aren't Tampa or Florida we don't just get to pick who we want and go out and get them no questions asked. It's far more likely that we are going to have to trade for the player to fill that role, hence looking to the trade market and reclamation projects.

lol, I think he could consider it given how close to his family we are, do I think it's a lock? no... never even said anything close to that...

sorry but trading for copp who makes almost double what names does would just be a complete waste of assets and cap space, he is closer to a cap dump then an actual 2C and dach hasn't been able to stay healthy nor has proven able to be a 2C and before you say some bull shit like he would be cheap to get, why? why would montreal give him up for cheap? they spent the 13th + 66th pick on him, they have plenty of cap space, they will just wait and see if he turns around for them rather then give him away for cheap

UFA contracts on guys like Nelson (good but not elite players exiting their prime) seldom seem to work out well. He’s likely looking to get paid and will probably want term. He’s already showing signs of his game slipping so even if we got him he might fill the 2C gap admirably for a season or two before his play falls off and his contract becomes a problem.

Same kinda deal as him at the trade deadline. He’s a fine a player, but probably not worth to us what he ended up going for as a rental. Good player, probably won’t be worth his contract for us.
