Let’s hope this is true about Risto.
See no reason to pay the big price to get Sanheim just to knock Samberg down after how’s he’s played to earn his slot. It would be a bad move by WPG and likely guarantee a trade request by Samberg.
Sanheim would knock DeMelo or Pionk down most likely.. .he's playing his offside

I wonder if Dobson might actually be on the market now with NYI out of it.

They are actually pretty set at the back and incredibly old up front.

They have Pelech-Pulock and Romanov-Mayfield signed or controlled for several years. Also have Scott Perunovich as 3LD and 5 or 6 D between the ages of 20-23.

So you could see where they might think they need to turn Dobson into some youth up front.

Dobson alone or with Nelson?

I don't know what a package would look like for that, but it'd likley have to include Perfetti, Lambert, Barlow and a first. And Ehlers would have to be signed up too.

Put him with Stanley until the last 10 minutes of the third, then up with Morrissey.

I'd prefer Evans over Laughton to be honest. Evans has great speed and tenacity. Laughton is more of a gritty plugger. I don't see him as much of an improvement over Kupari or Gus, to be honest.

I guess Laughton might be seen to have a bit more value because he's signed for next year, too.
Laughton has more ES points than Cozens or O'Reilly, fwiw.

Yes. This year he has. And for the past two seasons on RoR.

It does look like Laughton's current season on-ice sh% is up about 10.5% over where it trended the previous four years (5v5). That might not be sustainable. Or maybe he's playing with better finishers.

I think he'd as productive or more so than RoR.

Cozens is an enigma. The workhorse from Whitehorse. How can his career turn like this?

I just think Cozens needs a new home. But I don't think Buffalo would be remotely interested in the Jets #29-32 pick in this draft. Wait until the draft, and see who calls about him, probably get a top 10 pick for a young star with a contract that could be great if he hits his peak. And a decent prospect.

Defense numbers don't look good. Probably does just need a move. (to the best defensive team in the league)

Cozens and Greenway would be nice to attain depending on the cost of course.
Cozens between Ehlers and Perfetti would be great.

I keep reading that Buffalo is dead set on making a hockey trade if they move out their assets like Cozens/Byram.

I just don't really see how the Jets/Sabres can get there on a deal if that's the case, anyways.

Ideally, you'd want to be dealing with a team out of it (or who's needing to retool) who is open and wanting to take on picks and/or prospects.

Jets are dealing from a position of strength there and then purely adding to an already strong roster.

We aren't a very good fit for them in a trade unless they take a pick and prospect type deal.

I don't see any contender giving up much in the way of roster players and any non contender has no need to acquire before the TDL, so it could be that neither of them move until the off season if at all, Buffalo has no need to rush.

I would still love to see either Cozens or Byram come here though, will hold out some hope.

Agreed. This org actually needs to give these kids a legit run of games at C in the show to see if they can handle it. A few games here and there doesn't say anything about their long term prospects at that position.

This org is far too impatient with developing centers these days. Can you imagine if they moved Mark to wing back in the day because he took a good 20 plus games before he got comfortable at that position at the NHL level.

The situation is complicated because the Jets are in a win now contention window vs when Scheif was breaking in. They gave Koal a shot at center but obviously didn't love what they saw.

Lets look at Scheifele's path

Drafted 7th OA 6'3" bit of a project but definitely a center.

Draft +1 back to Barrie
Draft +2 back to Barrie
Draft +3 in the NHL 63 games 34 points Bambi playing 3rd line RW with Frolik. Little and Jokinen # 1-#2
Draft +4 Mark begins to get 2nd line centre usage 82 games 49 points (21-22 year old) looking better.
Draft +5 Little gets injured, team goes in the tank (78 points). Scheif becomes 1st line centre as a 22-23 year old and he gets 61 points in 71 games looking good at #1

After that Scheif was Scheif and by draft +6 he was a PPG #1 franchise center.

IMO we do not have a Scheifele replacement in our system. If we get really lucky Yager might be a Little type replacement (solid two way 2nd line centre) but things would have to go very right.

Byram is horrilbe in his own end and would cost a small fortune...Sabres can keep him.

Just a slight correction. Scheifele was the #1 center in 2014-2015, d+4, by the playoffs. Stafford-Scheif-Wheeler. Ladd-Little-Frolik was #2 line.

That is a good point. If the Ehlers thing isn't going well then the likely in house replacement is Brad. It would also also Cole to move back to his preferred side.

I also think they have switched gears to Yager filling that role as his game is more along the lines of what they value for the role. I'd still like to see Cole given a shot at the position as his all around game seems to be at the point where he can handle it but my guess is that ship has sailed.
At roughly Lambert's current age, Ehlers was putting up 64 points in the NHL. Nik's transition to the NHL was more rapid than almost anyone else in our top 6. Brad's transition has been not just slow, but the trend line is bumpy, to be generous.

I don't really see the Lambert-Ehlers comparison, other than the lighting fast speed. Certainly not yet, maybe not ever.

I think the price to get him is probably Lambert or Salo plus a first. If you're Trotz under absolutely no pressure to move him why take anything less.

Ummmm, because of the way he effed up last off-season. He has all that cap tied up in old players who are not delivering. Most of the contracts he gave out are immovable. ROR is one of very few he can remove to get both cap and roster space. And he needs futures to start repairing the damage.

That price would be ridiculous. This is not the ROR of 10 years ago, or even 5. I'd give them Lambert. Salo is just about untouchable.

Oh I get why they seem to think they don't have time to live with the growing pains but what exactly has their impatient approach gotten us.

This org has been scrambling to find 2C's going back to 2018. We've spent Laine, Roslovic, three firsts, and some other draft capital to solve this issue and what do we have to show for it, no long term solution, one conference finals run, and a string of embarrassing playoff defeats. You can likely add McGroarty for Yager and possibly whatever we give up next week for another band aid to that asset list.

Given not only this teams performance but the sheer asset depletion would this org been any worse off if they were to actually live with the growing pains of integrating a young C?

I'm sure they saw plenty of things they didn't like in our kids but never gave them the time to grow into the roles. I'm sorry but less then 10 games combined at center isn't anywhere near enough time to make an accurate assessment. If that is what they are doing I'd say they probably need to update their methods.

My fear is we see the exact same pattern when it comes to integrating Yager.

His style of play is similar but yeah he's nowhere near as skilled and has nowhere near the shot. But if the Jets aren't able to bring him back then there really is no true replacement coming.

Maybe he'd rather go to Minnesota though? Being from Warroad I'm not sure he wants to be traded to Winnipeg because of where his parents lived. Maybe he wants to stay East with his family, like Toffoli wanted to. Rags and Jersey are looking for centers too.

I'll wait and see. To me it's a tough choice. And everything comes down to right fit. We'll see who fits or doesn't in Chevy's eyes.

You failed to mention that Ehlers hasn't ever put up that many points since. That was the highest points total to date.

I'd say Chibrikov looked good in that spot. With Ehlers out.

The natural course of action would be to pop Perfetti up to #1 PP, which might take some different designs with the loss of speed from Ehlers to Fetts.

If you can get Perfetti to 20 goals with more PP time and Chibrikov in the 15-20 range I think there is some potential still in the organization to replace Ehlers.

Lambert's role is a lot more uncertain, but maybe he takes the next step.

I'd still like to see Barlow-Yager-Lambert as the top dogs on the Moose. There's a little bit of everything there. And it's a big difference from AJF and Malott/and whoever has replaced him in the development path, in terms of talent.

I'm not as high on him as some so I'd be ok dealing him depending on what is coming back. A long term 2C or top pairing RD and I would definitely consider it.

Still this team is going to need some cheap ELC's to help keep everyone and he's likely the closest forward to that.

Chibrikov is closer, when healthy.

Having Lambert on a cheap contract doesn't help if he isn't good enough. I see another Kupari. Great skater, but not much else. Only Kupari is at least good defensively.

Lambert's history suggests to me that he won't be good enough for the top 6. Right now he doesn't have the skill set for the bottom 6. He is going to need to develop a bottom 6 game if he is ever going to make it in the NHL.

Hope I'm wrong but I would be happy to get anything good back for him now.
