Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Appleton is a funny player. He's really one of those guys that if he isn't producing people turn on him pretty quick (me included).
However, he is extremely consistent when it comes to the way he checks and works the wall. I think he quietly does more for the team that most people realize. Guys like him, Neiderrater and Iafallo I think are a huge reason why we are the best in GA with an average defense.
I'd much rather strengthen the bottom 6 by swinging for the fences and getting a legit 2 C, adding Namestnikov to the bottom 6 mix. He makes us so much better there, will have more energy (which I think is extremely important for his game) and is a great option in case of top 6 injury.
Of course, getting that 2 C is a tall, tall order.
I would argue that for the most part no other teams don't address thier needs maybe with the exception of Vegas but you can look at pretty much every other team in the league and point out a glaring deficiency that they have been unable to address for years. Especially in the flat cap environment of the past few years, maybe that changes now with the cap going up. Teams, even bad teams are not in a huge rush to trade thier good players so you can say Chevy should go and make an impact move but unless there is a partner out there willing to move an impact player he can't exactly will it into existence.
As for Risto I think the Jets feel that they need to be bigger, longer and harder to play against in the playoffs. Risto and Laughton both accomplish that. The argument that they may be sending better players to the press box is absolutely valid but I think that is how the Jets are approaching the deadline.
I think O'Reilly should be the priority add. He is the one guy who is an improvement defensively on Namestnikov that scores at a better clip as well.
It takes our sheltered line with Ehlers and Perfetti to one more capable of winning tough matchups.
His defensive impact, term, experience and the way he plays the game just feel like a perfect fit. Only question for me is if it is in fact actually an option for us...
Nelson will make us better, but similar to Monahan, there is a trade off for that. Our team is at its best offensively when we are capitalizing off shutting down other teams in the neutral zone and on their breakouts. I think adding to that strength can help our offense as much or more than adding a player with solely offensive impact. That's my subjective opinion though...
If we are going to tinker around the edges and re-enforce with some additional depth options, that is fine too.
I think for defensive adds, @voyageur was on the something with Mario Ferraro and Ryan Lindgren as LD options. Not sure Arniel has interest in replacing Stanley. But these two are the physical, PK workhorses that can protect the front of the net. Ferraro is the better fit with the highest cost I imagine. Grier hasn't been the toughest nut to crack of GMs from the little I've paid attention to...
if it is Miller who Chevy is looking to upgrade? Can't do Ristolainen if we are adding a 2C with term. Which i would definitely prefer. But if there is no 2C with term coming he becomes a bit appealing. Pretty clearly better than Miller, a lot of similarity to what Myers provided while he was able to be sheltered here. Again this player has trade protection so it may not even be an option. But seems like a really good option for plus 3rd pair guy that can move up when we run into an injury.

I think jets need to add a little size to thier defense and maybe a guy like laughton to provide little depth on offense... making a major splash seems enticing however adding a significant piece may disrupt the chemistry.. still imo the jets have proven they can overcome injuries and shuffle lines without compromising much of thier overall team dynamic or structure.. Arniel is the main catalyst behind this and should not be overlooked.. whatever he is preaching the team has bought in that's what is pushing them over the hump this year... arniel is huge upgrade at head coach and is going to get paid and should be coach of the year.. u can add any talent to this mix and arniel and company will make them thrive... let's go big grab a top 6 forward top 4 dmen and win this cup.. no1 will beat this team 4 out of 7 no1.. this is not a fluke they are the best team in point differential goals against and 2nd in goals for.. no1 beating this team.. this is unbiased opinion.. u don't lead league in almost every metric and lose.. they add significant piece on defense and top 6 and it's already sealed..
Apparently the Jets offered a 2nd for Laughton, but Philly wanted more? Saw on Reddit.

Could be wrong, but I think the only teams looking to make the playoffs that still have their 2025 1st round pick are:
Boston, Columbus, Ottawa, Vancouver, Detroit, LA, Carolina, Washington, Winnipeg
Never know with GM's, but the first 5 in the list may not see themselves as teams that would want to willingly move a 1st (especially for a rental).
That really doesn't leave a lot of teams left that could be interested in dealing a 1st, and not sure if what we are looking for is the same as the other 3. Might make sense for Chevy not to bid against himself in this instance.

Last week leading into 4 Nations, I heard Frank S on DFO basically saying Philly is sitting there waiting for the first team to offer a first for Laughton and he's gone.
Take that for whatever it's worth.

I think the Appleton criticism here has gone over the top. We've accepted that Stanley is going to play, no matter what. Even if we get an upgrade at 3LD he moves over to the right. So we have got to have a new whipping boy. Yes, his play has fallen off. He started the season well, then was injured. He hasn't been quite the same since. I suspect he is still not 100%.
He also may be beginning to show the effects of aging. He hasn't fallen off that proverbial cliff yet. He is only 29. But if he has lost even a fraction of a step it could be making a difference. I'm not ready to toss him under the bus by a long shot yet.
That said, I wouldn't object to an upgrade at 3RW. But I don't see it as a high priority either.

I have to wonder which of those teams would have a need and be willing to move it for him?
It would all be about depth. What happens if Lowry or Namestnikov get hurt? Run Kupari and Gus with there all of 12 points combined this year?
It’s nice to imagine aiming higher. Which of Yager or Salomonsson are you trading? You might need both for a top 6 center with term.

Mostly agree - but, to a limited extent Chevy can "will it into existence". Any GM can. Not all trades are limited to players who are being shopped. When it is put out there that a player is available GMs who think they want that player look at what they have that might get him. They don't just look at their own list of surplus players. They consider whether they are willing to give up player x to get player y. They also talk about wanting a solution for a problem. Chevy can call a GM and start a conversation by expressing an interest in a player. What would it cost us to get that guy, or this guy? I suspect it starts as just conversation. If it sparks an interest they get down to details.
Chevy can't force anyone to give us what we want for our junk and he can't force a player to waive but he can start the ball rolling. At least he potentially can.

Yager and Salomonsson are untouchable. We have other assets and enough picks to acquire someone more impactful. Laughton is a bottom 6 center and in no way would i want to give up a 1st for him. If you can get him cheap for depth great, but i'd rather Chevy aim higher if he's looking for a C.
I want a big, fast, RW to play on the 2nd line but it is risky disrupting the excellent team we have now.
