Okay, back to our regularly scheduled trade speculation.
Some stories I'll be looking for:
1) The Jets are buyers, but are they shopping in the high-end market? My guess is that Chevy's prepared to spend plenty of futures capital to add a top F and maybe a solid D, but will there be anyone available to the Jets for a trade? I'm not so sure. If not, I think he'll add a couple or more good depth pieces; at least one F and one D.
2) Will the Jets sign any pending UFAs before the season ends? I doubt the RFAs are dealt with before the summer, but what about the UFAs? My guess is that they'll only extend UFAs like Pionk, Appleton if they don't add high-end players in trades, especially if they have thoughts about re-signing them (as they tried with Monahan). I won't be surprised if Chevy defers this all to post-season so that there aren't any divisions between signed and unsigned vets down the stretch.
3) What are the plans with Ehlers? Increasingly, I think he's likely to stay past the TDL, but I'm much less confident about a contract extension this summer. A lot might depend on the performance of the team and Ehlers in the playoffs. I still think there's a small chance of a blockbuster trade before the TDL that sends Ehlers to a contender and the Jets flipping assets to acquire a top 6 forward. Odds of this have dropped considerably, but perhaps not to zero.

I think the Jets are looking in the high-end market but would prioritize acquiring players that the team could control for a few years and do not currently have trade protection. If the player does have trade protection, then the focus likely shifts to players that are from the area (western Canada, Minnesota) or played in the area and prioritize having a chance at winning a cup over location. We really don't truly know who those players are until closer to the deadline maybe.
I get the sense that Pionk and Ehlers (the two prominent UFAs) may want to check out the FA market and not sign even if the Jets are pushing to sign them now. This may be their only opportunity to cash in (based on age, having a career year, and salary cap going up significantly the next 3 years). I would be very surprised if they signed and did not take advantage of this once in a career opportunity, imo. I'm sure their agents are advising to see what the market is for them. RFAs will be dealt with during the off-season or TC.
I still see Ehlers as a potential trade chip that is moved before the TDL, but the odds aren't very high that happens, imo. I also think that Boeser might be the UFA signing this summer that effectively replaces Ehlers in the top 6. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Jets try out Connor-Scheifele-Boeser next season. I'd like to think Vilardi would stick around and sign long-term as a RFA, though I'm not sure what the future holds with him.

1) While I do think we need a proper 2C, it will depend on what options are available. I’ll hold out hope for a trade bringing Cozens to the Jets.
2) Apples shouldn’t be to expensive, though if he asks to much, Chevy should definitely let him walk. He’s found a fit with Nino and Lowry, but he is far from irreplaceable. I can see Lambert or Ford taking his spot next season if Apples leaves.
Pionk, I wouldn’t extend at all. I don’t think he will recreate this years production next year and feel any deal will quickly come back and bite us in the ass. Plus, I think he is the best one to replace to upgrade our RHD.
3) I think the cap increase that’s been reported, and confirmed, almost certainly cemented an Ehlers extension from an organizational point of view. It was unlikely before that, as money would have been tight and we could use Ehlers money to address our 2C needs, but now, we can afford both and keeping Ehlers is definitely preferable. Having said that, it’s all in Ehlers hands… does he want to stay??? That will likely depend on how deep we get in the playoffs, what promises he gets about his own usage and role going forward, and if the 2 sides can find common ground financially. He might also want assurances that he will get a proper 2C to play with, as he’s been basically dealing with a constantly changing lineup.

Agree with all but the Cozens part. I know some people hope, or even believe that he will flourish here. I'm skeptical. He has talented players to work with in Buffalo and can't get it done except for that 1 year when everyone in Buffalo scored very well.
There is a chance that he rebounds here but I think the odds are against it. I would much rather go after Ryan Strome from Anaheim to give us 2 years to bring Yager along.

Nothing noticeable lately, has been -35ish for a good week+ but finally getting through that, around 0 the next week, even up to 3 a few days. Give us some sun and this snow might be gone until the yearly mid march blizzard

I really think you have to let the season play out.
Let's see how all these guys do in the playoffs.
Chevy's biggest decisions should come after the playoffs.
I don't see any extensions until off season unless it's a Samberg long term
For the depth guys sure, but I feel if you leave it that long with the bigger pieces they are likely to atleast test FA.

Wouldn't you want to know though if Ehlers can actually score in the playoffs before re-signing him. If you give him $9 million and he puts a goose egg in the playoffs, are you just resigning yourself if you're Chevy to being a regular season team? Conversely if Ehlers has more goals than he has in his career in one playoff series well then yeah you want the guy.
After last year's playoffs Pionk probably has to redeem himself to get an extension.
The other guys well let's see who brings it.
I feel after 10 years the org should pretty much know exactly what they have in him and what to expect going forward. Id imagine they have already made a decision on whether they are willing to pay him what he wants or not. His playoffs this year really shouldn't move the needle that much one way or another.
The same goes for Pionk. They should know what they have in the player and whether they want to keep him.
This is assuming both players want to come back, one or both may have decided they want to go somewhere else.
I totally agree we need more from Ehlers in the playoffs but if he was willing to sign a long-term deal today i would absolutely do it.

I do think Ehlers playoff performance this year has a big impact on him re-signing or not. If he goes up a notch, with that PP time he hasn't had before, or with a greater playoff hunger, his value goes up.
For Pionk I think it's more set, but if he falls off a cliff in the playoffs, again, there may be some discussion internally about keeping him long term.
I also think there's an element of distraction that Chevy wants to avoid by negotiating in the regular season. The De Melo signing last year showed that it was safe for Chevy to let the season play out, and then start negotiating.

Listening to 32T today and Friedman basically said there's still smoke of Rantanen being flipped at the deadline if Carolina can't get a deal done. Said basically that if that's the case, Chicago retained half the salary in the initial trade, so his hit is 4.625m right now, but would be ~2.3m come TDL.
Basically said, IF, he expects there to be a line-up of teams, and listed the Jets along with the other contenders as potentially being interested in him as pure rental --- knowing full well they won't sign him come the off-season.
