Speculation: 2024/25 Trade Rumours, Speculation etc Thread

So…..with Rantanen rumoured to be back on the trade block…..

If we can’t lock up Ehlers by the deadline do we do a ranto for Ehlers + pick or prospect swap?

On paper looks fine. I worry about breaking up the gang.

Big eye test vs fancy stats moment here. Surprised Bob has switched to team eye test, tbf, tbh, imo.
It’s a great analogy to use as an argument for eye test against advanced stats (not saying they have no value they just aren’t the whole picture).

For example I have spent time in Montreal. Stats would say it’s a minus 10 winter day, it’s minus 20 in Winnipeg. However, unless you’ve ever felt a really humid minus 10 day in Montreal, it might be a fair comparison to a non windy dry -20 in Winnipeg. That humidity cuts through everything. It just feels colder. Hard to describe.

I live just off Lake Huron in midwestern Ont where we are currently dealing with -10 to -20 temps, constant white outs and road closures, 15 foot drifts and windchills that feel like -30. Windchill is a thing and absolutely sucks the heat out of everything. I can't even BBQ as it sucks every ounce of heat out of it. A few years back we had a full January where the highest it got was -30.
Funny thing, ROR grew up just down the road, so he's used to that weather and small sized community away from the big cities. Maybe he would move to Winnipeg and try for a few cups there.

I could see the Canes being interested in Ehlers if they wanted to move Rantanen but I highly doubt that Rantanen would extend in Winnipeg, or that the Jets would pay him $13M+ to re-sign.

I think the Jets' model should be to just continue to load up on talented depth that can consistently outplay opposition and count on the Scheifele line to at least match opponents' top lines. It's more feasible for the Jets now and in the future to use that model for roster building without any elite players on their horizon. It fits with their prospect pool that has a number of good but not elite talents... Yager, Lambert, Chibrikov, Barlow, He, Walton...

Some people like to talk hockey no matter the time, some people may be early risers , some may work nights , some people are in different countries and time zones. Weird thing to complain about actually.
Wasn't complaining I love it

People just don't understand this!

Yeah, it's been our improved depth that that has largely pushed us into the top end. We had the core before but it wasn't until surrounded by more quality that we took a big step. I think we need to keep focusing on this model.

Did I miss something, are the Canes already looking to deal Rantanen after giving up so much for him?

No just a rumour mill thing. If they can't sign him there are one or two supposed "insiders" thinking they might move him again. Which really doesn't make a ton of sense to trade Ehlers for him then, if Rantanen won't re-sign in Carolina why would he re-sign here instead?

Well it helps that we have a superstar in Helly and some lesser stars like mo. But, as long as they build around Helly and he keeps up his play it’s easier to be somewhat good.

Ehlers + for Necas would have been the ideal move but it would have been hard to pass on Rantanen for the Canes unless it was a big + from us. Then could have extended him or atleast have him as a two year stop gap.

Zero chance we have interest in Rantanen and what a silly rumour to even go around, Canes would look like idiots moving him already.

Still can't believe Oilers got Savoie for almost nothing. That would have been a great pick up.

Massive IF on all of this... but that would be back to back years where Carolina went big game hunting with Guentzel and Rantanen and could have nothing to show for it long term.

Ouch.

We have our fair share of challenges in the market here, no doubt, but some other teams face them as well when it's time to put pen to paper for the long haul.

I agree. Just would add the context that this is coming from Kyprios who was talking about a rantanen trade before anyone back in Nov/Dec time frame and everyone was discounting him. He has just put rantanen as number 1 on his trade board. And added the comment that they simply can’t afford the price they paid for rantanen if he doesn’t sign so they will look to move him.

He was right before - may have an insider in canes org. Or they may be playing him to put leverage on Mikki to sign or be traded.

It would seem crazy if they moved him but if they give up 2 players one being necas and 2 picks and have nothing to show for it again this year, it may be unacceptable to the org and they may try to cut their losses by getting a player and a pick or a prospect and a pick for him as a rental to another team.

Long story short - I don’t think it’s as crazy as some others here. Def a possibility.

I think if they had a better arena and facilities they'd have no trouble attracting anyone. They already don't really.

The more humidity in the air the easier the heat from our body transfers from it.

Apparently Noah Dobson has changed agents and is highly likely to be traded.
Also apparently vegas is looking at marchand.
