It's that time of year friends. Athletic player survey, no one will ever take our trophy.

Three quotes about us, the bad food is kind of suprising:

“There’s not much to do out there,” one player said. “It’s f—ing cold. I haven’t heard a guy go to Winnipeg and be like, 'This is going to be my forever home.’”

"Nothing to do, bad food, freezing,” another said.

Here’s one Jets player’s defense of his city, noting that the drive from the airport to downtown isn’t exactly the scenic route: “I remember when I first did it, it was underwhelming. There are parts of the city that are great, but you don't see that (as a visiting player). I always wish that they'd stay down at the Forks or somewhere like that. I don't think that hotel meets the criteria for the league, but it would be better than staying downtown."
And this is why Chipman can't build his own hotel for the visiting players fast enough. Downtown is disgusting. Contain the visitors in Chipmanland with good food and something to do.

If we can't get a legit 2C which that looks like it will be tough with our NTC constraint and what is available on the market.

Then I think the two spots I would like to see upgraded are somebody who can play with Niedderreiter and Lowry, pushing Appleton to the 4th line. And an upgrade over Stanley on the 3rd pair. Preferably a guy who is rugid but who doesn't handle the puck like a grenade.

I'd put any upcoming draft pick, Kup, Gus, Barron, Apples, Iafallo, Rashevsky, Ford, Chibs and any prospect except Yager and Salmon in play for a big trade.
I want Chevy to go all in and pick us up a bona fide 2C and a D man for a long playoff run.

That's not how Chevy will roll though. He has to keep this team competitive, for future years, to keep fans in the seats, and trading prospects away when you can't sign free agents is killer.

Chevy also values term in trades, so multiple assets for one kind of trades are up his alley. Draft picks are a way to obtain assets that can be retained, just depends on who you are looking at. Last year Chevy had to deal for a 2C because Monahan was needed for the PP. And faceoffs. Toffoli was a panic move because it was questionable whether Vilardi would return. The De Melo, Namestnikov, Niedrreiter trades are still paying dividends.

There's not a lot of panic because the Jets have been fortunate in the injury front. Hopefully it stays that way.

Rashevksy, Levis I could see in play. Because neither have signed here. Chibrikov would be an offseason decision I think, depending on whether he wants to stay or go, but could be an asset in an upgrade if Ehlers moves on.

I proposed Cody Glass for Lucius because I don't see Lucius making the Jets, I'd hedge on Glass having better results than Lucius over the next year and a half, which by then would make Lucius a waiver eligible player.

I'd put the 1st in play for a d-man. I just don't know where the Jets are looking at yet. Miller has Coghlan behind him for depth, Heinola too, but an injury to Melo has nobody who realistically can step up in a 20 minute per night role.

Same with Samberg. Can one player fill both those potential voids? Olli Maata is probably the most versatile d-man available as a rental.

And this is why Chipman can't build his own hotel for the visiting players fast enough. Downtown is disgusting. Contain the visitors in Chipmanland with good food and something to do.
All the more reason to revitalize Portage too. Turn all those empty stores and Pay Day Loan places into attractive and bustling stores/entertainment options.

I agree with this. I just don't see a center being available that would be a big enough upgrade to justify the cost.

I think there are more quality dmen in the market this year.
Agree. I think Dumoulin or Risto would genuinely improve the D and might not cost too much. The only C options that would be a clear upgrade are probably painfully expensive.

People don't want to stay downtown. When the big retailers started going down that was a sign of the times. I think there's a real business model struggle for a 6 month a year sporting event destination.

Realistically any remodeling done to Portage Ave still can't hide that it is public housing, low income housing, and poverty to the North and to the West. East side is a lot of hotels that aren't tourist destinations unless you are from Manitoba.

Gentrification requires government investment, and tax breaks. Look at the MMF expansion. It's hard to see the governments going all in for Portage Ave. as suburbia keeps growing and demanding its share of tax dollars and services.

This guy? The Leafs need another Left Handed D?

This is what Seattle fans think of him....

Man, it’s frustrating as hell to watch a big body that doesn’t use it. Oleksiak should elicit fear from anyone in front of the Seattle net, but he very rarely does. And he’s not good enough to neglect a physical role.

#SEAKRAKEN would seem to imply the casual folks are still trucking along. Seriously get Oleksiak off this team...

The problem is that we have way too many passengers. Oleksiak just one of them.

Oleksiak letting him stand in front of Grubauer, no physical presence whatsoever. Not tying up his body or stick. Both just waving at the puck and hope you hit it instead of the CBJ player. Piss poor defense.

Oleksiak and Larsson can't even coordinate a simple breakout, turn the puck over, leading to Oleksiak taking a dumb penalty... This team is just really hard to watch sometimes.

Larsson and Oleksiak just standing there staring at Daccord while 4 Hawks try to hammer the puck out from under him. I swear this team…

Oleksiak just standing there next to Grieg, I swear he's the softest 6'7" hockey player I think I've ever seen.

I think that aside from Oleksiak that the blue line is fine

There's criticism of oleksiak in the Minnesota thread. Definitely a few people worried he is cooked

Oleksiak is a horror show this year.

Oleksiak gotta do better with the puck on his stick

Just putting this here as some food for though regarding gripes some Kraken fans have with Oleksiak.

Not saying these quotes are gospel, but something to think about if the thought of acquiring Oleksiak has crossed your mind. Not to mention he has a NTC anyway.

Risto is a coin flip for me

He may turn out as an amazing aquisition, or a complete disaster. I'm not sure now much middle ground there is

Worst case, maybe you can hide him on the 3rd pairing if they upgrade Stanley too

Risto makes 5.1m a year for 2 more seasons.
I really hope Chevy stays away from him.
We've tried hiding an expensive defenseman on the third pair. We are buying him out now.

Here are some quotes from Flyers' fans....

Risto has gotten better I'll give him that. He went from terrible to bad
Risto is bad and will remain bad.
Get rid of this guy while there are teams in the league looking for a blueliner...he's not a piece of the Flyers future...waiting too long could be detrimental for the club.
So far, the Flyers' offensive play has been almost non-existent when Ristolainen is on the ice, while the opponent is constantly getting high-quality scoring opportunities.
At best invisible, at worst butt crumb inhaler.
He is a human septic tank pump.
I hate him since day one. And i will hate him till his last day in a flyers jersey!
It's a travesty that this man is playing over anybody on the AHL squad
Trading for him was stupid. For the price was even more stupid. Signing him was insane!

I’m liking Names at 2C.. looking better as he is healthy now

With regards to this year's trade deadline, I agree with Chevy, and folks here who have implied the same, that it's all about opportunity. Not just focusing on positional weakness. If a significant 2C upgrade with term is available for the right cost - hell yeah! If a significant RHD upgrade, preferably with term, is available for the right cost - hell yeah! But I don't want Chevy to fixate on filling those positions regardless of fit or cost. A desperate buy could make us no better off now, and worse in the future.

Also Chevy has a clearer idea of the status of upcoming FAs - which are keen to sign and which ain't. That's a big piece of the puzzle we're missing when advocating what the Jets should do this year.

It's crazy that so many on here want to acquire him, would be such a bad move imo, having watched him quite a few times this season he just isn't any good, he doesn't bring anything to the table we need, simply put he is a 5.1m liability.

I really hope Chevy does not go after him.

Agree with your post but just adding that gentrification isn’t really government driven.

TNSE's major investor is a real estate development fund... they assessed the Winnipeg market and know what they are doing. I'd be surprised if they haven't scooped up almost all of the downtown for a song... and once they hit a critical mass - and a critical mass of govt support - then they develop...

Problem is that within that business model - its hard not to see that selling the Jets for $2 billion is a sound move once you've developed your properties downtown.

That's what Portage place was supposed to do 30 years ago. Worked for a little while but suffered from the same slow decay as the older stuff it replaced. How do you attract people downtown if you can't make it safe? How can you make it safe without dealing with homelessness, addiction, mental health and poverty? Not a simple matter of building a store, hotel or condo.

But no Edmonton.
Amazing how a trip to the cup changes things - I remember when Oilers were on this list. Not even on the 1.22% now (the fine print portion)

It goes to show you how hard Chevy’s job is

And how incredible it is we have a top team in the league right now.

people rip on players throughout the years…including scheif (at times) and wheeler but man
26 put roots in the community. 33 was a mainstay until he didn’t want to play hockey any more.

55 and 37 extended to be lifers. Yes Ehlers may leave but he’s put 10 years with the team. Lowry and Morrissey have put roots in the city.

Seeing that poll Makes me want to root for the Jets more than I already do because it is the ultimate perennial underdog team.
