No longer living in Winnipeg, I'd propose that that players are probably warned not to venture outside on the streets when in downtown Winnipeg, which restricts their choices dramatically. I know that unless there is a game on when I visit, I won't venture into that part of the city on foot.

Reasonable enough advice, unfortunately, but I really enjoy downtown on game or concert evenings when the throng of people is sufficient to make it safe(r). I know that some people (not athletes) I know have been instructed by staff at the Fairmont to take a cab to the Forks during a summer evening when it's not yet dark out. It's kind of depressing to think about but I'm guessing that the Fairmont staff probably have a solid handle on things. I work about a block from them but I'm rarely around in the evenings.

As to players feelings on Winnipeg yeah, as a lifelong guy it's hard to argue to be honest. If you can adapt to the winters and have the disposable income for a cottage property and interests like Buff or Helle, you can settle in and make it a home. But if I didn't have family around and had a much larger nest egg I'd likely move out of the city to somewhere nicer too. It is actually a great city to raise a family in and housing is at least marginally in reach for many (not a concern for a 22 year old millionaire granted); many neighbourhoods are fantastic and if we can somehow manage to address homelessness (yeah, I know what I'm saying) then it could get back to being a good city.

On the restaurant side it is, in certain respects, fairly poor in downtown for choice. The guys aren't likely heading into the exchange district based on advice so that's kind of unfortunate. But a lot of our great restaurants are quite spread out and not carrying their reputation outside the city.

On the trade front I'm hopeful they'll stay away from major moves, unless it involves a 2C with some term and footspeed. That will remain a need after this year.

I have been trying to think what the Jets will do at the deadline. I wouldn't doubt they add a D man but its likely a depth D. Not sure if they go big game hunter but Chevy will make the big move if he feels it will make us better.

Looking at our UFAs. I think they bring Ehlers back. Iaffalo walks, great soldier probably cost too much. Same goes for Appleton. Names they resign, useful toolkit player, won't cost a ton. I think Pionk resigns and spends the rest of his career here. There is a solid partnership developing between him and Samberg and they will then sign Samberg to a long term deal at a friendly number.

Bigger issue will be if they can sign Vilardi long term. I hope so. You got some in house replacements in Lambert,Chibs and Ford for the guys that walk and Salo is close on D.

They would be set to repeat or be close to what we are doing this year with most of the team back and Helly in net. They have some quality depth ready to play for the Moose next year with Yager,Barlow.Jacob and likely Lucuis returning. Some quality in that last draft with He and Walton really having big years. Its looking ok from a organizational depth perspective.

So what am I saying? I think they don't need to do much of anything. They tried that last year and it failed. I think stay the course with this group and let them know you believe in them. If not figure things out in the off season.

The question was about having Winnipeg 1st on a NT list. I'm pretty sure it would rank 2nd or 3rd on almost every other player's. I wouldn't be surprised if Winnipeg isn't on almost all current NT lists.

Winnipeg kills it for variety and quality with mom and pop operations, but that’s not where visiting NHL players are frequenting.

No Michelin star restaurants, only a few high end steakhouses. You’re going to get sick of visiting Earl’s Main St. every time you’re in Winnipeg. So yeah, not surprised at all by that comment.

Its most likely the lack of high end clubs or shopping... no hockey player makes a life decision based on restaurants

I've been to Toronto and couldn't stand their food scene.

I think this sounds reasonable. I think Chevy might have 2C as a higher priority but would only make a move for a clear upgrade like maybe ROR or Nelson. They need at least one more NHL D in the Dumoulin level.

If Chevy does make a substantial move, I'd think it's more likely for a player that can give at least two playoff runs, like ROR or maybe Risto.

If the right fit for the right price isn't there, then I think he'll just look at depth moves and ride with this group.

One encouraging element has been the play of Kupari and Gustafsson. With Lowry out, Kupari has shown he can slot in in a checking 3rd line. Before injury, Lowry had shown he can slot into a line with Ehlers. So if Namestnikov falters or they have an injury, they have 4 C's for the slots below Scheifele. The bigger reason to acquire a 2C might be in case Scheifele is out for a bit. But maybe he's not replaceable, anyway. The Jets have always sunk in the playoffs when he's injured.

I think the decision on Ehlers will depend on playoff success. If they go out early again and he's not able to perform at a high level the Jets would have reason to go in another direction. If they go deep and Ehlers continues to produce, both sides would have more motivation for an extension.

I like that they put Sissons and Ferraro on there. I think that's two good trade targets.

Trading with Nashville helped this team before, you'd hope Trotz is still a good ambassador for Manitoba, that he would do us a solid.

Sissons and Schenn would be good acquisitions for depth. If Nashville retained on Schenn.

Trotz has said he'll treat him like he has trade protection. I read it as he will be moved where he wants if he wants to moved, but if not then he's staying put.

Probably be the RH faceoff guy on the PK. You could start him with Lowry instead of Iafallo, where the 1st faceoff is the key. Protected on both sides. Kupari isn't a guarantee for the PK I'd say, but the 4th line energy for sure.

I agree with this. I just don't see a center being available that would be a big enough upgrade to justify the cost.

I think there are more quality dmen in the market this year.

That, and I retain a visceral dislike of Sissons, for no particular reason. Given what we have already in the lineup, trading for him and then sitting Gus/ Kupari/ Barron would be, IMO, another in a list of weaker TDL deSissons.

On a positive note, several players, including Gus, Kupari and especially Perfetti, are trending into playoff hockey and are significantly more effective for it. If they can keep it up then the team has that plus a built-in boost with the return of Lowry and a fresh supergrinder when Barron returns.

There's still going to be centers moved. NTC's play a factor. Cozens will get moved for assets the Sabres want not that Jets fans want to move. Gourde ends up somewhere, maybe back East. Maybe Malkin choses to leave Pittsburgh

Everybody's ability to play up a line has made the decision easier for Chevy I think. Lambert should get a game in on the wing, just to see what he can bring. I'd say Ford replaces some of what Barron brought to the lineup, but there's room for improvement there, in terms of depth, and experience. That's where a guy like Sissons fits Because if you commit to Kupari as a C, the next RW after Appleton is Ford, who hasn't got the PK reps yet, might not until next year.

There's things that work in the regular season, but playoffs amplify small battles and that's management's job to identify who can win those best. I still believe Chevy is looking at faceoffs, even though Kupari has found a role here. Simply because he doesn't have a whole lot of playoff experience. Have to start somewhere though.
