I highly doubt they trade ehlers, even if he is out the door he will be an own rental
Ehlers to me just seems like a bad bet on an own rental, for as dynamic as he can be during the regular season, he disappears every single playoffs. Either way I think the Ehlers situation gets dealt with before the TDL. Most likely a signing, 2nd most likely a trade.

I think a trade is the least likely, chevy came out and said he would love nothing more then to win a cup with ehlers, he is over a ppg and he is very important to our pp and 2nd line, don't see how we can trade him with out making the team worse this season

If they can't re sign him and Chevy sees no extension and does decide it's best to move him then do it sooner rather than later.

he did take a “less than market value”/team friendly deal when his last deal was done

Not that it means unshakable roots but indicates to me he wants to wear the pens jersey

If he’s open to a trade though, why not join his buddy in Colorado?

Oh he clearly wanted to stay in Pitt. But did he want to stay for a team that will be sinking out of sight? Even their young guys are getting old.
Maybe he's ok with that. He's got 3 cups. But the last one was in 17. Maybe he's getting hungry again.

If he wants to go to a contender there would be a few in the bidding. Maybe it would mean something to him to bring the Cup back to Canada after a very long drought. Just speculating because anything is possible.

Keep him this year and next and promise to trade him back to Pens for his last year.

God I hope the Jets make better decisions than reading Evolving Hockey stats for player cards.

I'm assuming this post was in response to the Ehlers/Boeser pic I posted a few days back. It was only meant to serve as a "Coles Notes" breakdown on the two wingers.

Clearly the Jets have their own scouts & in-house data, while the rest of us have to use war-on-ice.com, corsica.hockey, extraskater.com, behindthenet.ca, hockeyanalysis.com, offsidereview.com & yes...evolving-hockey.

With that said, I doubt the Jets analytics department are tracking an entire season of their opponents games themselves. To some degree they would either use some of these sites as we do, or pay these services for customized data.

Despite where they are in the standings, Colorado would still be tops on his list. Even Vegas ahead of Winnipeg.

I don’t agree with it, but that’s just likely to be the way it goes.

I think you are assuming too much. All we know is that he has been happy to take a pay cut to stay in Pitt - so far. If that changes, you need to be inside his head to know where he would go.

Gut feeling Chevys in on Brock Boeser, if the Canucks move him...hopefully for not to much.
What do you guys think?

I don't think he is who we need.

Being able to go 8 years is Chevy's advantage. We have already pretty much hitched the wagon to this core that will age out together. Chevy will likely do the same with Connor this summer.

You may be right but I don't see Ehlers being good that long. I don't mind a little term to an aging out player but that would be too much. The last 4 years would be hell. When he and Connor lose a step they will be bad. Connor at least has mostly avoided injury so he might last a bit longer. Maybe.

I think this is what's going to happen, I also believe when he doesn't re sign and walks to free agency and leaves many will be pissed especially if the playoffs are short lived.

Or if the PO are not short lived because he contributes.

If he leaves after a disappointing PO the pain will be reduced. We will still do the what if we had traded him thing though.

The time to trade him was the offseason (or if out of a playoff spot) They need to add to the team not subtract.

If he walks he walks. I think most people have come to terms with that.

And I took that as more of a bargaining position putting a little pressure on Ehlers camp to re-sign. Getting better or worse depends on the return, and getting a little worse in the regular season may not be a bad trade off if we are a better playoff team.

at the end of the day we got 10 seasons out ehlers, 3 more then owed, if he walks he walks, much rather have him for the rest of the season/playoffs then a late 1st/prospect he would get at the deadline
This is an assumption that Chevy trades Ehlers as a pure rental like we were out of the playoffs sellers. I find that as very unlikely.

who is going to give us a roster player as good as ehlers in a trade?
There are ways to be creative. You can trade Ehlers to a team out of the playoffs for a now player with term that fills a need, who then flips Ehlers as a pure rental at the TDL, and that is only one possible scenario.

and that is a very unlikely scenario, and the player with term will be worth less then a late 1st + prospect or why else would a non-playoff team trade him just to flip ehlers...

ehlers is a ppg winger on the #1 powerplay in the league, he is well liked in the locker room and part of the leadership group

the time to make a player for player trade with ehlers was in the off season, now he only has 20 games left and the options are very very limited in what we can do, well the realistic options not the made up scenarios that have never happened before

I still think the most likely outcome is Ehlers gets extended before the TDL. After that I trust Chevy to find his way out like he has done in the past. I just see Ehlers as a very bad own rental bet, based on his playoff history.

If you're Chevy, you can't make a deal like that when your team is performing the way it is, as it is

You look for an option to upgrade 3LHD (maybe even 3RHD) and look for a centre in for the middle 6 if one is available

Any type of hockey trade has to wait for the offseason

As for Ehlers, I think there's an opportunity to deal him for a 1st and a replacement roster forward (who obviously won't have the same impact he has)

Usually the teams that trade for rentals are the ones looking to win it all but I think that there are a bunch of teams that are within striking distance of a WC spot that would love to make the playoffs. If Chevy could get one of them to overpay for a rental Ehlers, I'm OK with that.

For example... Utah management would be thrilled for playoff hockey in that market in their first season. So something like:

Ehlers for 1st plus Bjugstad + prospect

Chevy pockets that 1st (mid to late teens) and uses the Jets 1st (late 20s - 32nd) to find another F that bridges the production gap between Ehlers and Bjugstad

CSV
Nino Lowry Apples
X Bjugstad Perfetti
Barron Gus Kupari Names Iafallo (some combo as 4th line)

Player X could be a rental, or a player with term who can slot into our middle 6 moving forward

Just to be 100% clear, I'd hope that Chevy could extend Ehlers as my first choice.... but if he's 100% gonna walk, this is an option to deal with it (plus we'd be upgrading our 1st round pick in June)
Quite sure Chevy won't deal Ehlers when he is a main catalyst on the #1 PP in the league.
Jets have a solid nucleus and great team chemistry right now.
To deal one of their main guys for some pieces would be a mistake.

I'd say they'll be adding a couple pieces by dealing away prospects and futures.

I tend to agree. Personally, I have no problem keeping Ehlers as an own rental

That said, if he vanishes in the playoffs again then Chevy will get raked over the coals

If he's dealt and the PP drops or the player(s) brought in to replace him falter, Chevy will be raked over the coals

It's a tough spot to be in, and it applies as much to Pionk as Ehlers

Totally fair point. I just struggle to figure out what trade involving Ehlers makes sense for the Jets, another team, and Ehlers himself
