Jets need and have needed a 2C and top 4 RHD upgrade since Buff left and we’ve been throwing away 1sts on rental for years…time to either bite the bullet and make the big trades, (Andersson, Dobson, Pulock, Pettersson, Miller, etc…) or knuckle down and dedicate to developing, (Yager, Lambert, Salomonsson, etc..)
Chevy has been playing the field hoping something falls into his lap and wasting time and assets in the process.
Chevy needs to decide on this year as far as if we are making a run or building for next year… if we are making a run we don’t need to trade Ehlers until after the playoffs, anything before is stupid as it lowers our chances in the playoffs…if building for next year then he’s fair game.
Samberg should be untouchable, both because he’s showing he’s developing into a good player and moving him opens another hole to address.
Our focus should be top 6C and top 4 RHD… nothing else. Anything else is a waste of assets until we finally address those 2 glaring issues.

My personal choices, in a fantasy land of availability would be Dobson and EP. 2 proven young players who fill our needs perfectly.

I like Andersson over Weegar, though Weegar is more a defensive player, I think Andersson fits the team better.
I don’t see Pulock waiving for WPG so I don’t see that happening.
Toews is interesting as he brings pedigree and leadership, but he hasn’t played in a while and it would heavily depend on what his ask would be.
ROR could work if we are waiting on Yager to develop.
Ristolainen is not an upgrade and is thus a waste of assets.
Granlund is not a long term fix and is thus a waste of assets.
The team can trade Ehlers after the playoffs, but they wouldn't get hardly anything as it would just be for his rights. I'd love to re-sign Ehlers for something that fits because I think it gives Chevy a little more wiggle room to move a prospect knowing he also doesn't need to replace Ehlers as well (and where that prospect would be key to replace Ehlers if Ehlers isn't re-signed).

Personally I think Weegar is the better player of the two Flames and fits the team better, but that's me. And has a great contract so the Jets either wouldn't be losing a player they just paid steep assets for, or extending at a much higher cap hit. If the Jets traded for Andersson, they're either extending him this summer for a much higher number than Weegar currently has, or if he won't re-sign, they're either trading him to re-coup assets, or just using him for another season. Either way, in the last 2 scenario's the team is back to square 1 in terms of adding a RHD.

I don't know how many, if any of the big names are really available though. Seems like most of the time there's more smoke than fire. (With the exception of Vancouver which seems like something could happen there possibly).

Right now there's 5 points separating 8th and 15th in the East so halfway through the season no one is bowing out. In the West it's 4 points between 8 and 11. Calgary is right in that race.

Won't be until after 4 Nations that trade talks heat up.

Calgary might still try to add if they see the Canucks as weak because I imagine their ownership, like ours, would like the playoff revenue.

The cost of rentals is exorbitant. The cost of term players would be even more, and though they get mentioned alot they generally get moved in the offseason unless you have an ownership that is trying to cut some salary, like Nashville did with Nino. Or you trade assets like Tampa did for Hagel/Jeannot

Interesting - id say term players actually cost less at the deadline because so many teams are up against the cap for the foreseeable future

I'd say Hagel and Jeannot set the standard pretty high. I can't think of too many others that were big names traded during the season. The Cap dumps can occasionally get you a good value. Most of the players mentioned would put the Jets over the Cap and I've yet to see Chevy trade roster players contributing to a winning season get traded from here. Not sure why this year would be different. After last season's uninspiring but effective free agent period I don't think you can replace any losses through free agency so the Jets need some depth to work with, with the expectation of losing more players this offseason.

As Adam da bomb mentioned, it's just pieces we can part with. Not all of them obviously. Could be a combination of one of those players, a pick and a prospect.
I would never want to give a pic a prospect and one of those players for 20 games of Granlund, a 5'10 178 lb 33-year-old center.
I might trade Stanley for him but that is about it.

I'd still take Granlund over O'Reilly. Watch the highlights of last night's Colorado-Florida game. And Colorado just skates right through the Panthers, who have a pretty decent 1-3 center group. Albeit they have Schmidt on defense who can get turnstiled rather easily. But it's not just Mackinnon either, all their top 5 defense are shooting gaps, playing below and between the circles It's relentless speed. Mackinnon is obviously the driver, on his way to a 100 assist season, and the Hart favourite, but it's not one guy skating out there.

I think the trades they made to address their goaltenders probably makes them the favourites in the Central. And the Jets don't need another Monahan one step behind the play, that's for sure.

Maybe if you draw an old team like Dallas, who still have some of the same kind of speed from their back end. And a couple of flyers, but nothing like the Avs.

Cozens would be my first choice. Lots of speed.

Yeah, we would all love to know what the GM and players know. They could very well be on the same page and out of the blue a long term deal will be announced. Chevy is very secretive, and fans wanting to know doesn't enter into his considerations.
He also might have talked to Volare's, Pionk's and Samberg's camp as well. Maybe he is getting his ducks in order because the sum of all 4 of them want more than he wants to give.

OK, but I would look at it from a little different angle. I would see him as an own rental. We spent whatever it is that he is worth in trade to keep him through this PO. We gave up a 1st and 3rd last year for Monahan. Did we squander those picks?
Well, that's results dependent. If we won the cup or went deep you'd be more likely to say yes.

It's a risk, much like any deadline roster moves

I'm sure Chevy has talked to all the camps. Some decisions are more pressing than others. Vilardi and Samberg are RFAs so I don't expect anything to be done until after the season. Pionk I think gets announced at some point as I think the organization wants to keep him and he wants to stay. Ehlers is a tougher one to judge, but Chevy wouldn't be acting in the dark, he will know where things stand with Nik.

True. But it is getting late. He could sign at any time until he actually signs somewhere else. That becomes less and less likely with each passing day.

Apparently the Ducks are looking to trade Dumoulin.

Jets should be very interested. He'd be a good fit for the 3LD role.

I would try to move Stanley for a forward with playoff experience and is built for the trenches. Maybe a Hathaway type.

Or a package for Andrew Copp as a 2nd C, depth.
