I really think we just need to bite the bullet and pay for a 2c, it's like every year we come out of the gate strong with all lines scoring, then it starts to drop off and the only line that can score is the 1st until they get tired and their offence dries up as well

The last 2 games have really magnified this, 2 very winnable games if we had a productive 2nd line. Get Nik some damn help

I tend to agree, but I can't think of many good available options, and I'm averse to a pure rental (especially if the Jets keep Ehlers and an "own rental"). Giving up key futures for a short-term 2C and losing Ehlers for nothing would be a huge hit to the Jets' talent pool.

Maybe they can re-sign Ehlers, in which case I could see the trading a top prospect F for a 2C, but I'm not convinced the Jets and Ehlers will come to a deal.

Another option might be to trade Ehlers as part of a big shake-up, but they would need to acquire a valuable roster player with term as part of the deal. That's a hard deal to make with Ehlers as a pending UFA.

Can someone point me to teams who have 2 great players on second line? They generally seem to operate with one strong piece and 2 secondary pieces. Ours is Ehlers, yet, they can’t seem to operate.

Each month that passes re signing Nik grows increasingly grim, a self rental is unappealing especially if the Jets go out in the first round and he walks for free. I have no idea what Chevy's plans are but you either re sign him or trade him, some fans will stay away next year with a short playoff run and him walking for free and this team should be trying to give fans hope, building the season ticket base not giving away really good drafted and developed players.

Agree, but feel like we've tried to bite that bullet and paid in 1st-rounders etc several times since the Stats breakthrough trade. Stastny, Hayes, PLD, Monahan, and even even Eakin have come and gone and here we are again. Stats aside that's a lot of draft capital and outgoing talent for the modest playoff success we've had.

Maybe this year they find a Stats-level complement with some term who can bring some value back. But with Ehlers' status up in the air and limited high-end talent in the pipeline, there's risk IMO.

So Toews playing for the Jets…good or bad idea? Might provide some leadership and intensity during the playoffs, but probably can only play 4th line minutes due to his age. Would be popular with fans but not sure if it helps ticket sales.

Adding Risto also doesn't eliminate bringing back Pionk I also think they will resign him for around 6 mil for 4-6 years. Especially with his Injury this year I think Salo is likely to spend at least a good chunk of next year in the A. Assuming his development containes on track then in 26/27 you'd have Demelo with 2 left Risto with 1 Pionk with 3-5 and Salo pushing for jobs.

Next year would be tight on the cap AI would be gone for sure (think that happens regardless) but you can afford to bring back Ehlers and Pionk plus add Ristolainen.

Wheeler intensity might not work in this group. Personally I like EP but his salary vs Mark/Helle might be a problem. Jets have the pieces to get EP, we're in win now mode, but not sure how that salary would go over with Mark & Helle. Don't want any locker room issues

He's been a shitty Tyler Myers type D all his career but the last few years he seems to have embraced a shutdown role and turned it around... decent speed and a hard shot. I think him and Samberg would have enough size and talent to grind down the MacKinnon line or equivalent.

That is where I stand as well. Someone young that is maybe spinning their wheels on a bottom dweller, but with the pedigree and talent to excel in a better situation. IMO Chevy needs to go after this aggressively.

A really good 2C is going to be very expensive, especially if it's not a rental. I still wonder if the Jets can't manage with a size/skill upgrade on the wing and manage with Perfetti at C or using Lowry with more offensive players.

One player that might fit the Jets is Anders Lee. He's a big Nino type of winger with better scoring. He could really complement Perfetti-Ehlers or Lowry. He has another year on his contract and trade protection and is the Isles' captain, so it's a longshot.

Another longshot winger would be Tuch from the Sabres.

My general point is that the Jets' best option for improving the balance at forward might be through the addition of a big talented winger.

Probably Ehlers. And a defensemen so maybe Samberg to fit the Cap.

That's why Chevy doesn't make big trades.

EP would likely show fairly quickly to be our 1C, but at worst we would have two 1C and his personality would fit well on our team IMO as would his skill set. Very rare can a team (small market) like the Jets land a superstar via trade or FA due to trade restrictions and at the moment EP has none as you pointed out. We're in win now, I'm tired of these year after year crappy half measure steps like Monachoke. Just think how many assets we've wasted over the years on a 2C rental, EP ends all that and would be elite.

IMO potential trade pieces could be some, obviously not all depending on Nucks needs:
- Cole P
- 1st rd pick
- 2nd rd pick
- Ville
- Pionk (cap partly, partly potentially value)
- Alex (cap)
- Lambert
- Yager
- Barlow
- Ehlers (cap & adds a lot of value)

I would imagine Nucks want mostly win now pieces but would be ok with some futures. If I was Chevy I would be looking at this very very closely and be willing to spend a lot to get him

Yeah to add to this Brad Shaw who had a pretty good reputation for fixing defenseman has done a ton of work with him. Since he got to Philly. Risto has always had great size and good (not great) speed. Shaw worked with him a ton on using his stick better defensively, and using his physicality to push guys outside without over committing and putting himself out of position. He is absolutely not an offensive dynamo and you probably don't want to put him in that position. He plays the exact game they want Stanley to play but he plays it effectively and consistently.

How could you possibly trade Ehlers at this point? I understand the concern about losing him for nothing but I think the trade ship has sailed. You don't trade away top players when you're first in the league and in your best position to contend in years. It would take some serious magic by Chevy to make that happen. Teams interested in Ehlers would be trading back futures and that's a really hard sell to the fanbase when you're gearing up for a playoff run. I think you just roll with it, hope for a nice long run and give it one more shot at signing him after the season. If you lose him for nothing, it's no different than losing a rental, even if it feels different. Ten years of elite play is a fine return on the 2014 9th overall pick.

Out of that list, Ehlers if he is willing to sign in Vancouver is the biggest win now chip. Perfetti is probably the next most interesting player to them. That is 2 now players, that play in our top 6. The salary for those 2 is not quite close to a saw off this season with EP but we could insert Lambert or Chibs on an ELC, so that is doable. How close do people think that gets us?

Idk if scheifele or Helle see it as a problem. But personally can't see the Jets bringing someone who makes 11.6m over any of their guys (Connor, scheifele), and playing Jets 2nd line minutes.
