Yeah Chevy will know how he's going to approach this but I think Ehlers as an own rental has some merit this year. Unless we absolutely crater heading into the TDL then I think keeping Ehlers is the better approach for now. See how he fares in another playoffs and then we can figure things out after,
I still think Ehlers re-signs well before the TDL.

This Ehlers situation is very interesting, as to what the Jets will do with him ? and I really don't think they're quite sure themselves ? You have a guy that could command $ 8.5 million as a UFA, and at the same time, he has been injured just about every other year. H e has a very small frame, and likely will get injured quite a lot going forward. He may even be able to command $ 9 mil per year - so do you want to pay him that over 6 or 7 years ?? That's a very tough decision for an owner.

Ehlers is very talented, and I would like to see him re - signed, as well as many others on here, but how much do you go on him ?? He's trending right now for about an 80 point season, and is a very unique player, that a lot of teams will be watching right now.

I think the Jets will sit on this decision, and see what his year end production is, and how he does in the playoffs. If he does really well, he could command a lot of money in the market, and you'll wish you would have extended him for less, before the season starts coming to an end. Very tough situation with Ehlers.

It comes to this for me, are the Jets ok paying 8 plus million for a player they still use only 14 minutes a game and likely returns to a 60 to 70p point player before he declines.

I wouldn't be ok with that personally.

The problem of a self rental would be if the Jets bow out in the first round and Ehlers wont re sign, people will be very upset first and foremost about the playoffs and secondly watching Ehlers leave with nothing in return.
That would suck so bad. But we are first overall in the whole NHL. We need to go for it, there is just no way around it. If that changes drastically be deadline, that's a different discussion.

With PP time Ehlers is getting a shade under 16 TOI. I'd pay Ehlers $8M per season, as I think we need what he brings and we need to take advantage of this current cores competitive window.

It seems like he's struggled pretty heavily. CBJ fans say he is hard to work with. Thinks he deserves to be in the NHL despite not really doing much yet. I'm guessing if he's moved it will be underachieving prospect for underachieving prospect type deal of similar age.

Too bad we don't still have McG. Perfect fit.

Seriously, I would love to be able to take a chance on the guy. If he gets turned around we could be looking at a right side of Salo, Jiri, xxx. xxx maybe Lundmark, or other. I doubt we could meet the price without giving up someone I would not be willing to give up.

Agree up to the part about figuring things out after. I'm pretty sure he is gone if it gets to that point.

I've been seeing the own rental situation staring us in the face for months now. I wouldn't call it a prediction but a looming possibility.

The better usage this year has probably helped. Maybe the relationship with Arniel also, but that is really an unknown.

I think Chevy needs to spend some of that predicted cap increase and get it done sooner rather than later. Time is not in our favour.

The projected cap increase will increase the salaries of all high end UFAs this off-season. I'm not at all certain that 8 will do it.

I legit think they would never trade him. So whoever your best young d man is plus multiple 1sts.
I don't think he is untouchable. If the Jets were trading for a top d-man with term like a Weeger, Chabot or Rasmus Andersson I think Salmonsson would be going the other way and I think the Jets do that trade.

They have to sign him if the Jets want to stay competitive in this window. He is the only thing keeping that "2nd line" respectable. There are no internal replacements available for him and if he goes that basically torpedoes an entire line as unlike the PLD/Trouba trades there won't be anything coming back for him if he walks as a UFA.

To be honest the Jets should sign Ehlers at any cost. He is not going to make $9 million in the open market, the Jets can offer him a matching deal to 55/37 to try to get it done. I think that is what it's going to take as the icetime is still an issue this season.

It is going to be interesting at TDL if Chevy does not resign any of the UFAs ... I can't see him trading anyone unless he gets a big center with term or a big RHD with term. No need too rock the boat the team chemistry is great.
Who stays and who walks for bigger payday.
1. Ehlers ???
2. Iafallo walks
3. Appleton walks (Barron slots in)
4. Namestnikov ??? (Kupari can slot in if he walks)
5. Poink ???

Vilardi and Samberg also get a bigger payday too.

I honestly don't think the Jets are going to crash if Ehlers walks at the end of the season. He's a part of the success but there are a lot of moving parts on a team that is getting 4 line contributing and Chevy has to have an eye on the future too.

Let's say Yager has another strong training camp, but this time you play him with Perfetti, who will be in camp and hungry in a breakout contract year. Could Perfetti or Yager play the bumper spot on that PP successfully?

You have prospects like Lambert and Chibrikov who are in a position to compete for NHL roster spots.

One of the fundamental keys to the Jets success Is Lowry's line, and their ability to turn the tide of momentum, and they play some of the hardest matchups night in night out. And part of their success is having a d-man like Morrissey or Pionk who can make plays to transition from defense to offense.

There's a lot of players in their contract years that fans will ask is this the best they will ever perform for the Jets in their career? And that's going to be Chevy's assessment at the end of the season, and I suspect that he doesn't really know the answer until the playoffs are over.

I'm not so sure. A good season here and a deep run could convince him to stay. I feel like Chevy already knows what Niks plans are so he'll know if they plan on waiting the season out or if they have no intention on staying.

If he has no intention on staying then the only trade that makes sense right now is one that improves the team right now.

Thank guys, so I am not the only one who really likes him :)
Great prospect, it is great to see young D who can play both sides of rink. I guess nobody is ready to heavily overpay until he is NHL proven. Great pick for you, good luck.

Thanks for dropping by and asking respectfully. Quick question I see you are a Habs fan, do you live in Sweden? Salamonsson is pretty below the radar prospect outside Winnipeg. Our fan base has pretty high expectations for him.

Yeah last kid we got from CBJ with attitude issues didn't work out so well on the ice for us but he did get us a good haul. This time around this kid hasn't proven a thing yet and if he's uncoachable then I would think Chevy has learned his lesson with these types and will pass unless it's a pennies on the dollar situation.

Chevy is a tough guy to figure out for me.

With that out of the way I feel like an own rental on a player of Ehlers stature is not something Chevy would do. Letting Nik walk for nothing in the prime of his career doesn’t seem like a Chevy move.

Time will tell if I am right
