I guess everyone on the coaching staff should be fired for incompetence then because they are playing Ferraro 4 more minutes per game than Thrun.
Yes this coaching staff has shown they are not a top notch coaching staff, and some of the decisions they have made have been mind boggling to say the least.

I see we're back to the random "let's bash Ferraro" posts.
The crazy thing is Thrun is considered beyond criticism because of his youth when he's only like 2 and a half years younger than Ferraro. Thrun is close to his athletic peak right now and can't even hack it on the third pair.

Because he is the worst player on the team, but i get it he is your favorite and does nothing wrong.
Nobody who defends Ferraro claims he does nothing wrong. You on the other hand just called him the worst player on the team which is objectively ridiculous.

I think Thrun is salvageable, but he's not part of the team's future. Mario has had his struggles no doubt. I think for some here, it's just cool to throw in a stray "Mario sucks" comment" to appease the popular kids.

I just don't see what there is to salvage. He has NHL size which keeps him in the lineup but he doesn't use it super effectively and his processing speed and overall skating speed are below average. Obviously he's a complete zero offensively. There's not much there.

I think he's a good skater and he can put on a little muscle on that frame (unlikely), he is smart enough to be a good defensive defenseman. The processing speed, I agree, is what's keeping him down. I think playing on the Barracuda for the season would do him some good.

What does Ferraro do that makes him above that statement?

Other then maybe blocked shots he is at the bottom of every single stat known to the hockey world. Every stat showing with and without Ferraro shows that he brings down his defensive partners and they get better instantly once away from him.

Only thing people can say about him that is good is he apparently hustles hard every night.

I am concerned that Thrun would not even be the 3rd best LD on the Cuda. Shuldt, Carlsson, Cagnoni, and Muk are all players that would probably play ahead of him with the Cuda. Thrun is not a prospect anymore and he is at best a #7 D.

If they activate Vlasic, I don’t know why it would be anyone but Askarov sent down. Until Grier is ready to make a deal or waive someone, Askarov will probably be made to wait or they gut punch Thrun with the reassign when they’ll need a seventh D come Friday for the road trip.

Ferraro doesn't just hustle, he's an extremely fast north-south skater which helps with retrievals and getting to loose pucks first. Along with Ceci he's one of our only defensemen who consistently ties up opposing forwards in front of the net. Plus he's one of the best shot blockers in the league and a good penalty killer.

If you're just looking at Ferraro's stats you're missing the full picture of what makes every coach he's played for trust him in critical situations. His defense partners are almost always deployed in a more offensive role away from Ferraro which is why it looks like he's dragging them down when that's not what's really going on.

Ferraro is a #6 who can excel on the PK but need a puck moving RD partner who is better than him on the third pairing. Most RD that are that good are playing in the top 4.

I do think Liljegren can be a competent #5.

Ferraro - Liljegren

That would be a competent bottom pairing. The problem is that is the Sharks 2nd pairing.

That is fair. I don't expect him to be on the team next year

My favorite is when people blamed him for a PP goal for blocking a pass across the crease to a wide open player because his D-partner was AWOL and the puck went back to the passer who put it in.

And Walman-Ceci would be a competent 2nd pair but they're our 1st because we don't have anyone remotely approaching legit top pair quality.

My brother in Christ literally his biggest problem is that he is constantly late to pucks and is totally incapable of breaking up cycles because by the time he gets to a player to challenge him the puck is gone.

That's a hockey IQ/reading the play issue not a skating issue. Yes I agree he is not the smartest player and he can't move the puck but his positive attributes are literally never acknowledged on this forum.

He's not a good skater though. It's NHL level but it's not good. It may look decent because he plays with Rutta and he moves his feet real fast, but if you look at how much ground he actually covers it's not good.

Absolutely he's a great shot-blocker. He's decently physical. He's genuinely quite good on the PK. He's a fun dude and I love his attitude. He's gonna go to battle for his teammates and he absolutely works hard. I respect what he's sacrificed for this team.

I just can't get on board that we are better with him than without him. I don't think Thrun is good but I don't think he would do any worse than Ferraro in the same role. We know what Ferraro is, I don't need to keep seeing him. It's just depressing.

No one needs to choose a favorite between these two, they both stink

But seriously, lol, while Ferraro is terrible he at very least is willing to engage in the unglamorous physical aspects of the game and has the body to make his attempts credible

Thrun is nothing and does nothing and accomplishes nothing, just a zero of a player

Neither player is any good but at the very least Ferraro can approximate a niche in the league, Thrun has no utility as an NHL player beyond being a serviceable injury replacement who doesn't completely crater your team

And those two being 66% of our left side is a huge reason we're the worst team in hockey
