GDT: 2024-25 season WCQF LA Kings vs Edmonton Oilers Game 2 @7:00pm 4/23/25 Kings lead 1-0

I just don't think that is going to the case (the fatigue part). This has happened in years past (especially in 2022 & 2023) and they didn't wear down until the later rounds, which is a benefit to other teams more so than the Kings.

Games 5, 6, 7 the last 3 years.

McDavid -
6 GP - 4G, 10A, 14Pts

Draisaitl
6GP, 6G, 3A, 9Pts

Also, if Hiller is going lean heavily on only 4 defenseman, there are going to be fatigue concerns for the Kings too, specifically with 35 year old Doughty. I'm ok with shortening the forward lines, a lot of teams do it, but they are playing with fire with the D usage if it's the same as it was Game 1.
makes sense. but still they are putting all the eggs in one basket in game two of round one, if i recall they didn't try something similar before. now let's break those eggs.

Not happy E. Kane is back, fully expect him to pull some absolutely filthy bullshit that doesn't even belong in the game. Really f***ing wish Jeannot were back to keep him in check, this is where Helenius, Malott, and Edmundson come into play. McCry can singlehandedly win a game on their own, washed Corey Perry got 18 goals playing with them where he would never have with another team.

Just hoping for consistency from the refs, which seems to be asking a lot. I don't care if things get called against the Kings as long as they're holding the Oilers to the same standard. I think that's what all fans want.

I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen tonight. Are we going to see the 1st and 2nd period Kings from Monday or the Kings who shat the bed in the 3rd? If they sit back, they're golfing next week.
With the Oilers the ref's consistency is player by player. Whole different rule book for some.

Thesis papers could be written about the hivemind declaring Skinner to blame for 6 goals against. Yet every goal against was from *prime* scoring areas. Turnovers in the slot, 2-on-0 in the slot, tip in on the side of the net, best offensive player on the team on onetimer he's buried a dozen times this year. Even the flutterpuck - shot right from the slot uncovered. You could maybe blame the Byfield goal on him, but holy Jesus have these fans convinced themselves that if they just had a different goalie they wouldn't suck in their own end and win 98 games a year.

Time for that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach again. Playoff hockey is both amazing and awful at the same time.

Anyways, on the bright side McDavid had like the best period of his career and we still won.
It's actually a worse watching experience when you're cheering for a McDavid opponent. Because you know deep down at any moment he can break the game wide open. It's not like that with 31 other teams. Maybe the Avs with Mack and Makar, but I don't think they come close to the feeling you get when McDavid has the puck on his stick and some space.

The uneasiness never goes away with him, even if you're up big lol

We're so lucky he's in our division

I don’t know why people are happy to see this.

I’m having nightmares of McDavid skating around a couple of people and sliding one/timers to Draisaitl when the support leaves LD open.
It's a gamble.

I think a gamble favors the underdog IMO because it creates more of a boom or bust scenario.

(Doesn't mean I won't be scared as hell when that line is on the ice though)

LA has proven that they can't contain that combination, so until LA can handle that duo, there is no reason for Knob's to break them up.

3 of the goals were cross crease and 1 was across the slot if I recall. That needs to get cleaned up ASAP.

The key there is playing the picks right. Edmonton loves to have weakside wingers cycling around the slot to try and time their lanes to match McDavid's cuts into open ice. Identify the pick plays, lock up the winger looking for the cross crease pass and force them to go back to the point to reset. It sounds easy, but in the man to man that the Kings play you see defenders worrying about McDavid so much that they tend to cheat off their own check to help out.

That is the worst thing you can do. Let McDavid be special, you cannot contain him. Concentrate on the pass recipients and not the puck carrier. The more success McDavid has, the more and more dangerous he gets because defenders want to cheat to stop him.

@Sol is 100% right about Draisaitl vs. the Kings though. Dude has like 100 points in like 20 games and he's skated a grand total of like 50 feet for those points

I love how hard he goes in on it because of the rustled jimmies but there's a large grain of truth in it as McDavid just turns the Kings into AYSO soccer and Draisaitl sets up a campsite between the face off dot and goal line.

I would just tell Malott to watch Kane all game and as soon as he goes on the ice to go fight him. Kane will either spend all game in the box, on the bench or busy with someone trying to punch him. Just like the Goon movie lol

Malott has been a massive let down in terms of physicality imo. Wanted him to go hard from the gate but nah. Not that they played much either but that line just doesn't have the vibe what it had with Jeannot

Maybe Hiller has him on a short leash. It would be way too easy for the officials to call a penalty on a no-name player who just breathes on McDavid.

Sol hates Draisaitl more than I hated Ryan Smyth. :)
He hates Draisaitl more than he hated the Byfield pick 🤪

In all seriousness, I get it. Draisaitl's skilled, but if the Kings could focus on him and not McDavid, he would be much more easily contained.

I know he's been productive without McDavid in the lineup, but not all teams are as stingy on defense as the Kings are.

Massive let down in less than 4 minutes?
