Being a good broadcaster requires a quick smooth speaking ability. You've either got it or you don't.
Ya, I was hoping she'd be better. I remember what a stuttering tick ray Ferraro was when he started but he had a long broadcasting career.

Edit: Actually after watching tonight I thought she had some pretty good analysis. I think she can improve.

I think there's an element of experience you're overlooking. Trying to communicate something that comes naturally to you, to an audience who may not immediately understand from a layman's perspective, takes practice.

She usually speaks to people on the same wavelength/higher level of hockey knowledge. It's not always an immediate translation.

isn't laf shooting like 25%+ right now

i wouldn't expect that to continue
3 of his 9 goals are deflections which kind of skews shooting % as you'll get credit for the shot when you score on a deflection, but not necessarily if you tip the puck but don't score (scorekeepers discretion on crediting the shot to the shooter or the tipper) and not at all if you wiff on a deflection attempt. Most of his other goals have been high danger slot chances.

I'd guess that % will drop over the course of the season, but it'll be because teams will start to realize they need to do a better job of bodying him up in the middle of the ice.

Amongst my many jobs I did player interviews (in a F2F panel style) and on club call lines. It’s really hard to do anything that’s broadcast and it takes time to settle. I wasn’t natural at it and although I improved I stopped after a season as in truth I hated it. I was asked to do play by play a couple of times but declined as I knew it wasn’t a good fit. I could talk hockey, systems, stats all day long but only to other hockey nerds.

Weirdly I found doing match reports on the club call really easy but I think that was because it was more factual. As you say explaining stuff with nuance is much harder when explaining it to non experts (no matter the subject). I can do it now but that’s after years of practice.

I’ve listened to a couple of Bolden interviews and she really knows her stuff. So does Rhéaume for that matter. Two very good hockey brains. I’d give Bolden time before passing judgement, it’ll take some time to settle.

Sure, but I think people have natural skillsets that make them geared towards certain occupations.

You've gotta be a smooth talker.

To be fair to her, I think there's plenty of former players doing this who aren't very good. And I have no problem with them giving her a try.

Please tell me Bolden is only there until Evans returns.
i hope she replaces him permanently. I think Evans is ok for the radio color job but he never adds much as the TV 3rd man. He hits all the obvious points, he enunciates clearly but it’s all cliches with no real insight. “Well the Kings need to play that possession game, get pucks in deep and get back on the back check”. Brilliant.

Bolden has room for improvement but I hope they give her a shot and get rid of the cliche generating mini-bot in the hideous shiny suit.

Evans should replace Fox.

I actually think Blake Bolden is less polished as a broadcaster understandably but her analysis is far better than Carrlyn Bathe who offers zero insight and a “yas queening” personality. I’d easily take Blake Bolden.
