2024-25 San Diego Gulls/Tulsa Oilers

It's shame the Gulls collapsed in the 3rd period, had played two really good periods.

Moore continues to impress me a lot, his skating is really, really impressive. Quite a few times where he's either blowing past guys, or using his legs to get back and make defensive plays. He's continuing to engage physically which is good to see.

Solberg's goal was very nice, some great patience (helped by zero Canuck pressure) and picking out his shot, it was a good example of the poise he had. Unfortunately in the 3rd he had a terrible turnover where he overskated the puck under no pressure and got stripped which resulted in a goal, but that's how it is sometimes. But again continues to be impressive too for a teenager playing in the AHL.

If Sidorov strings it together, he's gonna be dangerous. He had a shift in the second period where he had the puck for at least 60 seconds of the 90 seconds of the shift, and managed to draw two penalties as a result. His skating and stick handling is just so good. But he needs to start working through the physical play and extra attention he's getting and make more of an impact.

No games in the AHL today, Gulls are five back with one game in hand with seven games to go. Realistically they're gonna have to pretty much win out to have a shot of making it. Either way, it's a great fightback by them, especially considering they are decimated in terms of forwards.

I find it interesting that the Gulls with adversity have managed to just fight through it and play hard every game, while the Ducks completely crumbled. Maybe the sign of a competent coaching staff and a not so competent one (didn't think I'd be calling the Gulls coaching staff competent earlier in the season).

In terms of next year, the only Gulls players (AHL contracts) who's contracts are expiring are Heatherington and recent acquisition Twarynski. I think Heatherington is good as gone given the amount of defencemen the Gulls have going into next season, I'd say it's above 50% Twarynski gets brought back as he's been very good so far.

I expect Lindmark to get signed up by the Gulls in the off-season as I think he's been decent in a bottom 6 role.

Clara has joined the Gulls and Husso is getting called up to Anaheim.
I hope Clara can regain form and stands on his head to give us hope in our goaltending depth. I thought we were solid at the beginning of the season but Clang and Buteyets have also been disappointing, and Suchanek is an unknown. Might be time to draft another goalie.

hmm I wonder what we do about goalies next year

Got a lot of young goalies, but prob need a vet to come up(like Husso) for when Gibson is out
I agree that we need a vet third goalie. Gibson is missing too many games to rely upon him to be available the entire season, and none of the younger goalies is ready yet in my opinion. Buteyets has not proven that he can even play at the AHL level, Clang was way too inconsistent this year to trust with an NHL crease, Suchanek missed the entire season and needs to play at a high level in the AHL again before the Ducks can trust him, and Clara is too young and without sufficient experience. I would be fine if they brought Husso back.

Husso hasn't been bad. Not a 4 million dollar goalie, but I would take him back on a cheap deal.

Gulls get a second goal, long range shot by Carpenter goes through traffic and hits the post with the goaltender unsighted, Moore gets to the rebound on the half wall and just fires it back into the crease and Caufield jams it home.

7 minutes left to go, period has been all Gulls. Wild are sending one forechecker and both defencemen are not pushing up at all since the start of the 3rd period.

Oh man, Mysak just had a huge chance. McKeown one timer from the point, goaltender spits a rebound out to Mysak in the crease, but he can't elevate it over the pad.
Wild go down the other end on a 3 on 1 just after this and rip it home. Nothing Clara could do with that one. Luneau caught trying to pinch (similar to Trouba last night on the 1st goal) in no man's land.

Gulls lose 4-2. 1st period really stuffed them up, thought they played a strong 3rd period. Unfortunately they just really lack offensive talent among the forwards and don't have the firepower to come back from 3 goals down. Pasta, Colangelo, Meyer, Nestrenko, Gaucher is just way too much talent to be missing out on. Plus Harkins really should be on this Gulls team not in Anaheim.

Clara saves 22/23 on debut. Thought he was outstanding, looked calm in net and his technique looked solid. Didn't look like he was sliding or flailing around in net. Shut down several one on one's very nicely. I wonder given his size, if he'd almost be better suited to smaller North American ice.

I’m hoping Moore gets a couple games with the ducks….

I hope so too.

Here is Verbeek talking about Moore at the Migration event this year, courtesy of DucksnPucks:

Hayward: Ian Moore and Artyom Galimov, both having good seasons, is there an interest to sign them?
Verbeek: Ian Moore as soon as his college season is over he is going to be joining San Diego. And at some point he could play some games with us here in Anaheim. I don’t know if he is just defensive minded, I don’t think he had been allowed to be offensive minded. I think there is more there for him and for us. He is an interesting, very smart kid, very smart hockey player. Another college kid, so he has to learn college is different than the pros. He is probably going to start with San Diego for the next three weeks and then we will see.

Moore's first game was Mar 21st. Today is two weeks from the 21st.

The only thing left to say about Dansk is what a tragedy it must be for his parents that he voluntarily goes by Oscar when they gave him such a cool vibe with Lars Gustaf. Judgment almost as poor as his ability to play goal.

Solberg doing well but has a few things to work on with his defensive game. He loves to stay in the o-zone and sometimes finds himself on the wrong side of the puck when he should be defending. A full season with the Gulls will do him good.

He had a lot of hits again last night but seems to have better self-control, I noticed he went nose on nose with a couple of guys and I was worried about him doing something stupid, but the officials respond quickly to calm things down and that's good.

Clara also seems to be playing much better over here :thumbu:

It's common for Swedes to have one or more extra names, often to honor parents or grand parents. They'll be listed on passport and ID's but pretty much never used otherwise, not even in federal mail as they're registered separately, so I wouldn't be surprised if his parents never addressed him with Lars Gustaf.
