Best way to play defense is to always play on offense. I'm thinking that's what McIlvane made the switch and lean into Luneau's forte, which is being an OFD. Because @mightyquack has often shared that Luneau's defense is behind development. Also, the Gulls really needed to add more offense.

McIlvane had Helleson last year and the start of this year, but Helleson was never able to establish himself in the AHL b/c he was, I'm guessing here, being groomed into a #1D type defenseman who can play offense and defense. That isn't Helleson's game. Once Helleson got to the NHL and just played his game, which is a shutdown D who can chip in here and there, then his talent flourished.
Agree on both points….

I don’t think Luneau will ever be a stalwart defensively…. But if he can become average and still dictate offense he’ll be an effective player for us.

I feel like we’re forcing Mintyukov to play more of a defensive minded game, which I don’t think is where he’ll best excel, but hopefully the end product is a solid 2 way dmen. /shrug we’ll see

Crazy thing with luneau is didn’t he start off a bit slow in the AHL production wise …. I feel like a lot of his Pooints have come in the last 2 months or so

Tough for the Gulls. They just don't have enough up front with no Pasta and no Colangelo (who I would imagine they're getting back after tonight with Z returning), kind of amazing they score as much as they do.

Love the compete though, my stock in McIlvane has bounced back in a major way. Prioritize a couple of quality AHL veteran signings this offseason and we might have something.

Just caught up on the game, real tough loss for the Gulls. Injury list going into this one is Pasta, Meyer, Caufield (3 of your top 9) plus Pitre and Wiebe, and with Colangelo on the Ducks...they were missing almost half of their top 9 forwards. Warren was back in the line up for the second straight game.

First period was horrific, Gulls were completely on the back foot and if it wasn't for Dansk they'd have been down for a few goals. You could tell it was super disjointed with a lot of new faces and combinations on the ice.

Second period was much stronger, Gulls controlled it for the most part as they started getting back to their hockey (using the body and speed).

Third period was a toss up, but Gulls did a good job of coming back multiple times as I thought they were toast after going behind, especially later in the 3rd.

Nestrenko, Sidorov and Luneau were the best players, but Dansk was up there as well.

Gulls are 7 points back from Tucson having played a game more for the final playoff spot. However Condors are only two points behind Tucson and have two games in hand, so this was a bit of a big loss for the Gulls.

The Gulls are much more fun to watch, compete every night, and really they had no right to take this game to a SO when you look in the difference in quality behind the Condors and Gulls when you look at all the Gulls players missing.

I agree on McIlvane too, I wasn't high on him earlier in the season but as the season has gone on, they play a more structured game (still could be improved) and play a nice combination of physical and fast skilled hockey. He's really done a solid job in San Diego so far.

In his interview last month he talked about how when he came to the AHL he had to learn how to stop coaching to win, and instead focus on coaching individual pieces of specific players to get them ready for the NHL.

I wonder if he's coaching to win again lol
