Speculation: 2024-25 Roster Thread

Bear in mind that Colangelo and Cutter will both be in their second full seasons next year, sophomore slumps have hit our guys pretty hard in recent years.

Which guys had sophomore slumps? Zegras and McTavish were both better in their second year. Leo struggled for a while, but I think in total his year has been better. I also think LaCombe is a good example. This is his second year and he, like Colangelo and Gauthier, went the college route and so was a bit older had played a more mature level of hockey for a few years before getting to the NHL.

Zellweger has take a slight dip in overall point production, but has scored more goals and been better possession-wise. Mintyukov is the only example I can think of in the recent past, although maybe there are others.

Of course you never know, but I'm optimistic they'll take LaCombe's development path rather than Mintyukov since they're a bit older and have NCAA experience.

Don’t think Mintyukov has really regressed. Just forced to play a different role.

Ahhh... that reminds me Colangelo played his 25th game three games ago. He loses his eligibility to slide for the Calder next season. Glad that he and Mac are gonna be a pair that sticks together (hopefully) as well as close out the season with Mac. I'd like to see Colangelo get into double digits in goals scored. He just needs two more goals. For Colangelo's recent call-up, he's scored 9 points (7g, 2a) in 15 games. It took Cronin a while to finally put Colangelo with offensive talented players instead of a grinding role (what a terrible misuse of talent).

As for sophomore slumps, it might depend on who is or are coaching here next season. Could have a new head coach or PP coach or both.

Zell has increased his production in goal scoring, but his OZ Start% has been more favorable this season from 59.8 to 63.0. That is some serious sheltering. And he has played more than twice the game he played last season (26 games to 59 games).

I do think that Anaheim doesn't have enough blueline talent to draw out the most from Zell and Minty. Zell and Minty are still learning how to play defense. Until then, they cannot carry anyone like LaCombe has carried Gudas. I gotta admit, LaCombe-Zell is a scary offensive duo when they were put together when Fowler and Vaak got injured. We need more talent on the blueline or we just wait until Zell and Minty catch up to LaCombe, hopefully.

When is the last time they had 6 Ducks with 20goals ? Cutter needs just 1 more, Killorn needs 2 more and the Ducks will have Leo, McTavish, Terry Vatrano, Killorn and Cutter with at least 20 goals.

We've never had 6 players score 20. The most was 5, in 06-07, with Perry having 17. We've had 4 a bunch of times, last time 22-23, with McTavish and Strome having 17 and 15.

Holy crap, Dustin Penner had 29 freaking goals that season. I was racking my brain trying to figure out who the 5th was. I didn't think Niedermayer or Pronger got there, so outside the top line and Getzlaf, I was stumped. Dustin Penner.

Our highest scoring rookie until Ryan came along.

edit - actually if Cutter can get 4 or more points to end the year he'll pass Penner and end up 3rd on the all time list for rookie scorers (points, anyway).

Get Cutter 1 more and get 2 empty nets for Killorn, since they play on same line certainly possibly they can get it done and have 6 players with 20 goals.

I think we probably have different definitions of slumps.

The issue I'm seeing with our lines right now is that both the Vatrano-Strome-Terry and Zegras-McTavish-Colangelo lines are pretty poor defensively. You can't really shelter both of them, so you just have to deal with it. Obviously it doesn't really matter for the rest of this season, but I would hope there are some upgrades in the offseason.

A guy who can win a damn face-off would certainly help.

So what does the Top 9 look like next year? I think Terry needs to move onto the Leo or Mac line at RW. I'm still curious with Colangelo? Still need to add another Top 6 winger. Someone is going to have to move down to the 4th line to keep Sam in the Top 9. I also do not see that 4th line returning next year.

I'll be glad to see the last of Leason and Johnston. Are McGinn or Fabbri under contract for next year?

I assume we'll see Sennecke at least for a bit.

I think McGinn and Fabbri are UFA's

They are. The entire 4th line and its rotating cast of characters needs to find work elsewhere. I didn't mind McGinn when he was healthy for those five minutes that one game. And Fabbri was a fun guy to root for (also when healthy) but ultimately is a more flawed version of Vatrano. The Ducks need guys who can consistently contribute, whether that's on offense or defense. McGinn, Fabbri, Leason, Harkins, Lundestrom, Johnston - so long and thanks for all the fish.

5. Ducklings look ready to take off

Since the 4 Nations Face-Off, Anaheim’s young forward core has played some of the best hockey of their young careers. Over those 23 games, Mason McTavish has been a point-per-game player, Leo Carlsson is close, Cutter Gauthier has 18 points and even Trevor Zegras has 15 points in 20 games. All four have also outscored opponents at five-on-five with decent xG numbers, too. McTavish has been especially impressive with a team-best 54 percent rate.

If this is a sign of things to come, the Ducks could be very interesting next season. They look like they’re next up as a rebuilding team ready to take a step.

Even Trevor Zegras?!?!?
