Speculation: 2024-25 Roster Thread

This past little stretch seems heavilly carried by Strome line, with McTavish line carried the weight here and there.

For us to sustain this stretch we will need more and consistent production from Leo (lets hope for Zegras) and McTavish lines

Yeah I think it’s important to remember that we’re barely winning games with otherworldly goaltending and with Frankie/Strome/Terry/Jax red hot. Not a sustainable formula.

Correct but the last 9 games before last night a stat came up that said we were averaging 26.9 shots against per game vs 33 at the start of the season. 26.9 would put us 8th I believe overall if it was all season. With excellent goaltending if we can keep that up we will have a chance to win every game. More scoring is absolutely needed though to win consistently.

Stop it! Cronin is trash and we all need to keep saying it. Shame on you for offering evidence to the contrary. It's the goalies and nothing but the goalies.

Trouba coming in was a big boost in terms of blocked shots, and fear. I think he’s actually helped the most in terms of shots against changes. Trouba dumo gudas and ecen lacombe have showed willingness to abuse opponents physically.

I still think the shots we are giving up are too many of the high danger type (@Hockey Duckie has posted before about it)

Sustaining offensive time and being more productive offensively and on powerplay should be the next steps. That’ll take pressure off the goalies and defense.

I think that reveals a more encouraging development which I think it goes beyond just the last ten. From the point that Gudas mentioned they swapped systems, to my eyes, they’ve been quicker and harder in the defensive zone and better at preventing shots getting through. They’re still hemmed in for loooooooong stretches but it’s not as disastrous, which is real progress.

So I think the wins are a bit of an illusion but there’s something good happening underneath. Credit to the coaches for that although I still think the system is mismatched to the players, which is a major sin. Also the PP is just dismal.

The hemmed in is almost exclusively a result of guys either dropping passes backwards at stupid times or just not being hard enough with the puck. Ie we get pucks stripped or batted down at the blue line because we aren’t hard with the puck. Feel like both can be corrected. Fowler and his skating back into the zone has left PTSD for this team in that sense. Glad he’s gone the most for that reason as much as I was being tired of seeing him lose net front battles

I agree that there are too many turnovers but I think being hemmed in is a feature of the man on man system. Staying inside in that system essentially forces them to cede the initiative to the attackers. It’s supposed to force turnovers and then capitalize on them but we’re not good at that.

Agreed on the high danger chances being too high still but I also think in time that will also improve. Baby steps. I’m just happy the baby doesn’t seem to be crawling anymore.

Currently we're 7 points out of the PO spot, but for comparison, they (VAN, and same qith CAL which are just below) have only 1 more win than us. They just have more OTL and less regulation losses.

Before the season started, I wanted us to just beat Calgary, which are an older team on decline (imo) which I set as sort of a benchmark for myself. I sstill hope we do it.

Im not very good at that lol. Especially in Zegras threads because the tales are so brutal.
I actually think most people have been surprisingly civil and even the premise of the thread is relatively positive.

The reason our rebuild is kind of flying under the radar is because our young guys aren’t doing much. Lacombe is, but he was never a sexy prospect. None of the young forwards outside Gauthier have been impressive this year IMO - If anything disappointing.

Also doesn’t help that the teams in relatively the same position as us rebuild wise (CHI, SJ, MTL) have all had a 1st overall pick.

It’s fine outside of people who never watch zegras still being upset that zegras exists.

That’s my gripe. So many takes are obvious they don’t watch. I’m on the east coast of Canada, don’t miss a game and know how tired I am a lot of mornings. Less then 5% all the habs fans ripping on Z watch him play more then once a year.

I’m sure it’s the same way for most of the people voicing their opinion on our rebuild as well.

Well, it's also under the radar because Canada and the O6 don't bother with us. The other day on Overdrive there was a mention of us maybe looking to move Trouba at the TDL. They're absolutely clueless as to what goes on here.
