I see the Cates hot streak seems to have come to an end. Now scoreless in his last 11 games, hasn't got a point since Jan. 18th despite averaging almost 18 minutes a night over that time.
Has he actually been that useless on the ice? I haven't been watching the games.

Start of the scoreless streak? Some bad luck. Odds evening up from the good puck luck he had early in the season.
Now? Only thing I remember is Cates and Pell getting stuck in their own zone for a 3 minute shift. Its ok to ask if maybe Pell being a new player or maybe Pell isn't a top 9 player. Way too early to tell of course.
Cates had zero chemistry with TK when paired a couple weeks back.
If Cates is your 3c, you are fine. But if he getting top 6 minutes, then your center play sux. The next contract better reflect this.

It's almost like it was predictable that his personal 20% shooting and absurdly high finishing on his line were never going to last. Gee, what a shock. Surely we never see every 3rd/4th line in the league do this every single year, because if we did see that every year then none of us would fall for this every time it happens and then proclaim the endless genius of coaching and management.

Well they told us several times already they aren't shopping Laughton or Risto, so I guess we should take from that what we will.

Man it would be nice to have cutter still. To look and see we have 2 of the 3 top rookie scorers in the NHL would be impressive. Even if he still wanted a trade. His value is still increasing.

The math is brutal, but this should have also been clear to them a month ago when their best stretch of play of the season resulted in...minimal net change in the standings. They never moved into a WC spot or even really came close to touching one. The best they could do wasn't doing it, and to hope it might break through it had to continue for 3 more months. Anyone expecting a serious playoff shot wasn't being reasonable.
But we have strong reason to suspect it isn't clear to them because they're still clinging to sellable assets that should have no spot in plans for the future.
