Wanted to hold onto hope for a bit to see what the plan was but at this point I just don’t understand what management is trying to achieve. Brière seeing the writing on the wall and cutting bait with Frost and Farabee to have the team bottom out is promising in theory, but they have 13 picks in what is viewed as a weak class and sooo many holes in this roster, not to mention a coach that (at times) has them over performing to a detriment. And the same coach who has been a detriment to both a rebuild and the roster isn’t even in danger of being fired, but rather promoted when his contract is up. How can you even consider giving him more control in the organization??

The clearing of cap space “makes sense”, in what feels like a fever dream kind of way, for a big FA acquisition, but overpaying someone like Sam Bennett (not sure if he’s actually a target, but let’s use him as an example) to fill a need isn’t a long term answer, especially when you factor in a rising cap is going to let competing teams have a better chance to re-sign these core guys before they get to the open market. Like, what are we betting on here? On top of that, this team obviously isn’t a few big FA signings away from being a competitor.

So many moves feel like they take one step forward and three steps back.

Large swaths want nothing to do with him and 9 people who smell like rotisserie chicken 24/7 are huge fans. I have to say that tracks completely with my expectations.

It's not Tortorella's fault they're in this mess. I get the appeal. If he could just stop being a lunatic, he would be a fine coach. The problem is that the people in charge think the weirdness is part of the attraction.

To me, being able to install a structure and get effort is a solid summary of the baseline for a coach that doesn't matter. Most NHL coaches fall into this bucket. That is not in any way to say it's acceptable to pick a guy who doesn't move the needle as a target. I would argue it's a hallmark of poor organizational process.

Then of course we adjust for the weird interpersonal skills and all of that.

Yeah, the "would play for besides my own coach" list is mostly negligible. Cooper looks great. Maurice looks good. Everyone else has 2-8 players who like them. Out of 108. This isn't impressive or informative.

The fact remains - he has been GM almost 2 calendar years. He’s accomplished nothing since that time, other than Michkov. Using the word rebuild bought him time, but not when you only find a way to bring in one potentially high end player.

I wouldn't say he's accomplished nothing - it might not be things you like, but he has done 'stuff'.

To your point, though... what has he accomplished?
a - moving out players he didn't think fit what the team is trying to build
b - picking up assets by using cap space
c - eventually trying to free up cap space

He's done a lot in less than 2 years, actually... though I'm not sure it's all part of a coherent strategy. And he has definitely sold low on a number of assets and gotten little in return. Also did not extract value from swapping 1sts with Edmonton.

You might say he has a bias for action lol.
