Hell, Gauthier may have had something to do that night when they randomly showed up and expected to meet with him.

In a sense the Flyers controlled his destiny, at the time they held his rights. He could and honestly should have been told no, go back to school. But the Flyers actually bailed him out

You’re forgetting that the Flyers are desperate to make the playoffs and their woeful pro scouts thought Drysdale could step in and upgrade the defense. They didn’t trade Gauthier as a favor to him.

How did the Flyers screw Cutter over?

He refuses to say what happened. The Flyers say they don't know what happened.

They tried mending bridges with him both at the WJC, with Briere and Jones, and at BC with LeClair and Sharp, and he refused to meet with anyone.

The Cutter camp essentially ghosted the Flyers for months, until the agent officially requested a Zoom meeting after the World Championships in May '23, which Briere thought would be about changing his mind and accepting a contract offer, but instead was about officially demanding a trade.

There's no evidence the Flyers botched this. All we've got is speculation because the Cutter camp won't explain.

The leading guess is that Cutter wanted to turn pro and burn a year off his entry level contract after his freshman season ended in March 2022, and the Flyers weren't willing to gift him an NHL spot at age 19 as a college freshman, and didn't want additional cap penalties in the process. They wanted to sign him after the NHL season. And he got butthurt and froze out the organization thereafter. But again, it's speculation. Regardless, you can't let a college freshman run the asylum. He was a good prospect, but we aren't talking Michkov here.

They broke their promise to sign him and burn an ELC year. This is basic information. I have no idea how you can discuss this situation at length without this basic grasp of facts.

He did say. His camp put all this out there. We know it because of that. The only reason you pretend he hasn't said anything is so you can pretend the failures in authority with the Flyers are flawless.

It’s very obvious that Gauthier’s camp felt they couldn’t trust Flyers management after the March 2023 fiasco. No one who follows the team closely enough to post on this forum should find that surprising. We lived thru that shit.

They wanted to avoid his agent and try to pressure the kid directly. Kind of a shitty move, really. He handled it the right way.

I'd love to be corrected, because I've seen nothing but speculation and Cutter's camp refusing to give a specific reason for his decision.

Throw in Scott (with Barber advising him).
I have no problem, allocate the blame any way you wish.

I dump the lion's share on Holmgren b/c he blew two prime chances to rebuild, once after the Carter/Richards trade and again after he fired Hextall and it was obvious they weren't build to contend.

But I don't buy that the current group is a continuation.
It's obvious that most of you haven't listened to single presser by Torts.
It's also obvious that if the former group still ran things, they would have traded for a veteran center and goaltender before the season.

Instead, this group is adamant about rebuilding, about sticking with the kids, about accumulating assets - the complaint is they're not tanking, but that train left the station in the summer of 2019.

I don't get bent out of shape by Buium or Gauthier, b/c watching them I don't see Makar or Rantanen. So meh. I'm not going to get excited about Perreault until I see him in the pros against NHL players - Rizzo and Brink had great numbers and won championships in Denver, but the NHL is a different animal for smaller slower players.

I don't think the Flyers have a shot at a slam dunk talent, but there are maybe 1 or 2 a draft - but there are a half dozen players each draft who turn out almost as good. The key is to hit on one of these guys every couple years. And fill out your roster with solid players to complement them. I'd be happy with another TK or Briere.

The team sucks because the goaltending has sucked.

With average goaltending they'd be in the playoffs and if Ersson stays healthy they might still make the playoffs even if they trade Laughton and Risto (though they might wait until summer in that case).

It's now 22 games since 11/25, becoming a decent sample size:
They are 2nd in xGF%, 58.06%, behind NJ and ahead of Edmonton (56.87%)
They are 5th in HDCF
They are tied with Edmonton at 1st in GF/60.
And this hasn't been done against the little sisters of the poor:
Vegas, Florida, @Min, LA, @LA, @Vegas @Toronto, Toronto, Dallas, 9 of 22 against top 8 teams.

The PP is awful, 29th in GF/60, 32nd in xGF/60.
The PK went south, the worst in the league over this stretch.

So there's a lot of work to do.

And it means they don't need drastic additions, top six/top four upgrades that push solid players down, replace Risto, Seeler and Hathaway the next couple seasons. Add a ST specialist or two. And find a starting goalie. Achievable goals.

I am curious what the reactions here would have been if the Flyers had selected Makar or Miro over unanimous consensus #2 OA Patrick.

I still maintain that Makar would not have become Makar if we drafted him. He would have either started in Allentown or on the third pair with Hagg or something. Not that I believe the scouts were actually banging down the door for him. How much turnover have we seen in the scouting department since 2017? Just last year Danny basically said we didn't need Buium because we already had Drysdale and Andrae. We seriously believe they wanted a small dman out of a lower league committed to a "lesser" school with the second overall pick? And why wouldn't the same argument apply to Makar in 2017 with Ghost already on the team?

Having Jason Robertson instead of Morgan Frost and Isaac Ratcliffe, both of whom Hexy traded to get while leaving Robertson on the board, wouldn't be a game changer right now?

These repercussions show up many years down the road.

The Flyers blew wayyyyyy too many opportunities under Hextall, and they are paying for it now.
