2024-25 Roster Thread #2: Midseasonnar

We get it. You don't like Bob Clarke, so you want to act like these reports of Hextall overruling his scouts to take Patrick over Heiskanen or Makar, and overruling his scouts to take Sanheim over Pastrnak, are all a big conspiracy concocted by big bad Bob Clarke.

Except the reports about the scouts not wanting Patrick have been numerous. They have been supported by league scouts. It was supposedly a national scout who mentioned the Pastrnak/Sanheim thing.

Think about it.

If you're on a scouting staff that recommends Heiskanen and Makar over Patrick, and get overruled by the GM to take Patrick, who flops while Heiskanen and Makar excel, wouldn't you be pissed and probably leak the story? I would.

Same with Pastrnak and Sanheim. If you're a scout on a staff that recommends Pastrnak, and you get overruled by your GM, and Pastrnak becomes a world class scorer, wouldn't you be pissed and probably leak the story? I would.
We also get it. You think 8 years old after the fact hot tub time machines posts are accurate and clarkie would never lie. The scout on the flyers knew more than the 7 teams that passed on Pasta after the flyers scout had the courage to stand up 8 years later. Think about it is absolutly correct!

this team is all the fault of

fans not cheering
really people think this which is what makes it still funny to me.

But maybe just maybe it might be time to say hello to 2025 instead and admit the fact the entire organization needs an enema. Maybe turn off Uptown Funk from 2015 and say hello to 2025 realities.

The number one aspect this team needs is draft evaluation for the next 3 years. I would a million out a million take the person who could evaluate elite draft talent over signing JVR and Kevin Hayes.
Has this team negotiated contracts well over the last 15 years. Jody Shellly and 44 part 2 would agree and no one else.
Has this team evaluate coaches well the last 15 years? Sure looks like at f to me.
Has this team traded well for the last 15 years? Trading picks for bleh rh d-men over and over and over. Bold strategy there Cotton.

The point is moot as they was no scout that wanted Pasta and Makar. Its all Clarkie bs to cover the utter ineptness of Flusher and blame Hexy. The truth is there is so much c*** all over the place that everyone deserves blame. Its a giant S*** sandwich and no hot sauce is available to cover up the taste. Not even Clarkie's false teeth.

The point is moot, you're right on that, but I'm still going to argue with you over the theory that our GM could be shit at literally everything else as long as they're a good amateur scout. If I need surgery, anesthesia is a really important part of that surgery, but I'm not going to ask the world's best anesthesiologist to actually cut me open, because that's not where his skills are best applied. Have him do what he's good at, and hire someone who's good at the actual surgery part to do the surgery.

Ok let's have some fun again. Take from this list what you will. To me? New Era is BS. Zero Accountability. Vast majority of these people are around for a long ass time.

I would just like it on the record that my Like is not for this part. But the other half deserved it.
The reason you stash AHL plus guys is filling the bottom of the roster with low cost veterans is hit and miss, and when you miss, you need an alternative.

You can "buy" veterans to stash with two way deals,
Better ones might cost a NHL contract that both parties know will probably be buried.

Belpedio is a good example, his deal is $450K/$775K. He's shown he can fill in for short periods and give you adequate play and he's a good mentor for the kids in LHV.
Richard is $500K/$775K.
Abols $450/$775
Gleason $425/$775
Gardner $400/$775
Makiniemi $200/$775
Eklind $82.5/$950 (still RFA eligible)
But you can only play 5-6 of these guys in the AHL, so the rest of your roster is prospects or scrubs.
Right now it's mostly 2nd and 3rd tier prospects.
Rizzo (23), Gaucher (23), Tuomaala (22), Desnoyers (22), Wisdom (22), Gendron (21), Avon (21)
Ginning (24), Andrae (22), McDonald (22), Grans (22), Samson (21)

I don't know if the Pastrnak story is accurate.

I am very confident the Heiskanen/Makar over Patrick story is accurate. It's been reported by way too many sources, reliable sources like Meltzer, and the reports came well before the Clarke interview, who mentioned on a tangent that "none of our scouts wanted Patrick."

I do know for a fact that Hextall was a control-freak dictator. That's been well-established. I even heard it from a bartender who was best friends with the brother of a player on the team. How everyone was relieved when Hextall was fired and they could finally eat pizza, and drink beer on the team bus or plane after a win. We all read the reports about how Hextall shut everyone out of communication except for Chris Pryor. We all know he moved the traditional Carnival date for some reason.

Hextall was also an awful talent evaluator. We know that from his many draft whiffs, his Weise and Gordon signings, his stupid Filppula trade, his stupid Hartnell for Umberger trade that had the league scratching its collective heads, as Columbus was about to waive Umberger, and the fact that the best NHLer he traded for in his 5 year tenure was Radko Gudas.

Then he takes over Pittsburgh and reinforces how terrible he is at talent evaluation.

So, yeah. When you combine Hextall's known control-freak nature, known terrible talent evaluation skills, wide reporting that he overruled his scouts to take Patrick over Heiskanen and Makar, then I don't find it hard to believe he overruled his scouts to take Sanheim, his relative, over Pastrnak.

Maybe, just maybe, it's time for you to recognize that Hextall made monster mistakes that have repercussions to this day, and that these reports aren't all a giant conspiracy concocted by Dr. Evil, Bob Clarke.

I have it on good authority that the Flyers' scouts also wanted either Werenski or Rantanen in 2015 and Thompson, Debrincat, or Kyrou in 2016, but were unfortunately overruled by Adolf Hextall, who laughed maniacally and dumped an entire pizza and platter of wings in the trash as he did so.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if Hextall overruled his scouts to take Provorov, considering Provorov was a Brandon Wheat King.

Its all
hextall's fault

got it.

never change flyer fans

Interesting to knock the Patrick pick by Clarke.

Considering they employ the guy who was the general manager of the Wheat Kings at the time.

The players needed to be dedicated to proper eating habits and training. He correctly tried to keep the alumni out of the picture and away from the team. He was right about all of that. He wasn't a terrible talent evaluator. He drafted I believe 11 or 12 NHL players in 4 drafts. The teams starting goalie back then in Hart. The current teams best forward and defenseman. He had some misses but removing hindsight. I don't fault him for the decision to draft Patrick. Universally thought of as a future NHL 1C. There is no public information that I have heard about Sanheim over Pasternak

Until you go full enema from top to bottom, the flyers will remain team 21-27 in the nhl over and over and over and over and over. Bill Murray could see this. They will continue to think its the right call to draft a 3c over a smaller skilled defenseman because this organization chases the position and "playing the flyer way" over talent. This is an organization flaw. Homer, Hextall, Flusher, Danny you name it. As much as I hated Flusher, firing Flusher didn't solve the problem. Its just a new snake head. I hope Danny proves me wrong.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the same team that doesn't draft "offensive" defenseman because they have Cam York and Emil Andrae, neither of which are on an NHL PP currently, probably wasn't too high on an undersized defenseman playing Junior A hockey in Alberta and never played a high level international event. Just a guess though.

This post is fantastic.

Replying for two reasons , want to make the 2 fan boys see how insane it is again and also two boys from Flin Flon are employed currently, I may sharpen up the resume.

The worst thing you can be is an incompetent control-freak dictator. And that's what Hextall is.

He burned all bridges in the organization with his control-freak nature. Everyone hated him. And in year 5, at the time he was fired, they were 2nd to last in the Eastern Conference, I believe.

If you're going to piss everyone off and be a dictator control-freak, you better win like Bill Belicheck.

Sure, the blind squirrel found a couple nuts in Konecny and Hart, but overall he had way, way too many big misses in the draft, when the draft was his entire strategy. And his NHL evaluation skills were ridiculously bad. Which continued to his disastrous tenure in Pittsburgh.

The next time we're all talking to our local gossip fiend, it might be a good idea to start asking about internal processes. Not who wanted who when or how right your favorite choice was. What do the actual nuts and bolts of how they make decisions look like?

I really cannot stress the "billion dollar lemonade stands" talking point enough. (Appreciate Jeffrey.)

Everyone hated him because he wouldn't continue doing it their way. With the same methods that have been failing forever. His execution was off but his approach was correct. They originally hired him to be a change agent. Then when he tried to change everything, they balked. "You can't change the Flyer way". If he hits on Patrick, which was just bad luck, a lot would've been different

Hextall was a control freak, if he was a competent control freak, he's have been tolerated.
But while his first two drafts were solid, from 2016 to 2018 he fell way short.

What made it worse was not going all the way after the 2015 TDL, by riding Mason in 2015-16 to the playoffs, he raised expectations only to have them dashed twice. Had he torn down the Flyers, he could have bought a few years to rebuild since he had a mandate from Snider. Instead, he did nothing for two years, fooled by a hot goalie into thinking they were close to being competitive.
