2024-25 Roster Thread #2: Midseasonnar

You missed the point. You said that the Flyers didn't go out and sign a veteran goalie. Yes they did. They signed a 28 year old goalie to a 3+M 2 year contract.
He's not a veteran goaltender, he's never played in the NHL.

Of course he is a veteran goalie. He was drafted in 2015 and had played 8 seasons of professional hockey before coming to the NHL. If he is not a veteran goaltender, why did they pay him 3+M a year? I hope it changes but as of right now. Another error in judgement by the Flyers. You often say that if the Flyers had even average goaltending, they'd be contending for a playoff spot. They say they want to be competitive and compete for the playoffs. As of right now, seems like they screwed the pooch again. Every instance comes back to the obvious conclusion of how incompetent this organization is. Right now, they're incompetence has benefited the fan base. Allowed them to get lucky with Michkov and hopefully their cluelessness leads to another high pick. Hope they don't screw it up.

Goaltending is killing this team, plain and simple.

Show me a team in NHL history that was any good with last-in-the league save %, or a roughly .876 team save %.

Every team that receives that kind of awful goaltending ends up with a poor record.

5 on 5 the Flyers have actually played well. The goaltending has sunk them.

That's not coaching.

Carter Hart screwed them, plain and simple.

And good luck finding a proven above-average NHL goalie to replace him with, especially with the tight cap.

Ersson got hurt, they were hoping one of Fedotov or Kolosov could at least be NHL average. It hasn't happened.

Yeah, we don't have roster the quality of BOS to compensate for lacking 30 goddamn goals vs expected.

Here are the biggest trades so far:

12/28/24 Parssinen & 7th for Pavel & 3rd
12/18/24 Barron for Carrier
12/18/24 Borgen and 3rd, 6th for Kakko
12/14/24 Biabutuka and 2027 2nd for Fowler
12/9/24 Georgiev, Kovalenko, 2026 2nd, 2025 5th for Blackwood and 2027 5th
12/6/24 Trouba for Vaakanainnen, 4th
11/30/24 Jiricek & 5th for 1st, 2027 2nd, 4th and Hunt
11/25/24 Tomasino for 2027 4th
11/12/24 Eller for 2027 3rd, 2025 5th
10/30/24 Liljegren for 2025 3rd, 2026 6th & Benning
10/30/24 Maata for 2025 3rd

The only "major" deals were Fowler, Jiricek and Blackwood

A "rebuilding" team shouldn't be that close to the cap
They've used cap room to sweeten deals, Provorov & Walker trades, and to dump veterans.
They're still on track to have $6M at the TDL and they have Ellis' LTIR money if needed.
Since you can't roll it over, that's more than enough to finance any conceivable deal.

When have the Flyers patiently accumulated assets and taken a long view?
Only period was when they fired Clarke, and rebuilt in 1990-94.
Hextall started at the 2015 TDL, then stopped, then started again in 2017, then signed JVR.

Flyers have fewer 30+ year old players getting regular ice time than any other rebuilding team other than Buffalo (and they're a disaster area):
Buffalo (1): Zucker
Flyers (4): Couts, Hathaway, Risto, Seeler
Utah (5): Kerfoot, Cole, Bjugstad, Maata, Valimaki
Montreal (5): Matheson, Armia, Gallagher, Anderson, Savard
San Jose (6): Grandlund, Toffoli, Wennberg, Ceci, Rutta, Goodrow
Anaheim (8): Strome, Vatrano, Killorn, Gudas, Dumoulin, McGinn, Johnston, Trouba
Chicago (9): Teravainen, Hall, Foligno, Jones, Mikhevev, Murphy, Smith, Maroon, Brodie

Briere has resisted making moves to improve the team such as trading prospects/picks for a veteran goaltender or center. You know Holmgren would have pulled the trigger on such a move by now.

Which is why inaction is good, to me the optimal outcome this season:
1) continue to play well at 5x5, evaluate the current roster
2) let the goaltenders deep six the season, focus on improving STs
3) move Laughton and Risto at the TDL and/or June, add picks in 2026 and 2027
4) be opportunistic but not desperate, if you can trade for a young center go for it.
It’s exactly how they built their most successful clubs in the mid 70s and mid 80s.

The relaxing of free agency rules did the Flyers no favors, but at least in the 90s and early 2000s they could just spend their way to contention. But now, when you actually need smart management and player development to succeed, you get the ongoing shitshow that we’ve had for over a decade.

Trouba deal is a major deal.
