Who in the top 9 is getting benched to make room?

Laughton gets moved to 4th line?

C - Frost, Coots, Luchanko
LW - Farabee, Foerster, Tippett
RW - TK, Michkov, Brink

4th line would be some variation of Laughton, Poehling, Cates, Hathaway, Deslauriers

But I tend to agree with you - it's not happening unless someone is traded.

Walker? Giroux?
Great, two examples of players on expiring contracts. One of which they tried to sign until the last minute.

I must have missed where the Flyers had expiring contracts that they'll want to move at the deadline.

They had one of those but then they decided to re-sign the guy a year early.

They don't move people with term or "core" pieces ever. See Scott Laughton and Seeler.

If Hart didn't go AWOL they probably end up with 95 points and a playoff berth last season.

It comes down to the goaltenders, if Ersson/Fedotov are average or better, they have a shot at the playoffs. If not, it solves itself and players get moved at the TDL.
Every team petty much comes down to goalies. This your out. We all get it.

Playoffs or not this team is not contending anytime soon. Seems like your ok just making the playoffs.

Lycksell was a 6th round pick.

He was under a point per game in the AHL at age 23.

OK, 39 points in 38 AHL games at age 24. Great.

People mocked Gerry Mayhew, what has Lycksell shown that he's anything more than an AHL scorer like Mayhew?

Why are people pretending he's some kind of significant prospect?

If he can beat out someone in the top 9, good for him. I don't see it happening.

And he's useless as a 4th liner. At least let the 4th line be a pain in the ass to play against.

Lycksell has 6 points in 26 career NHL games. Hathaway had 17 points in 82 NHL games last season. Hath can give you the same production on the 4th line while also bringing a completely different and beneficial physical element to the team that Lycksell lacks.
Last year he played less than 10 minutes in 8 of his 18 games.

Just a friendly reminder that the Buffalo Sabres have missed the playoffs for THIRTEEN STRAIGHT SEASONS.

This includes a #2 overall pick who was considered generational in Jack Eichel, who forced a trade out of that pathetic losing organization.

Tanking isn't a panacea.

Already tired of the should Luchanko make the team storyline.

I'd be happy to give him a few games on the 4th line wing before sending him down if he doesn't pee himself for the rest of preseason. Let him see the NHL, and make the lower level seem easier. Once it seems easy he'll be confident and score 250 points. It is a flawless and very probable plan.

Friendly reminder that the Buffalo Sabres have won more games than the Flyers since 2021. If tanking is bad, what the Flyers are doing is a lot worse.

There are several parts to "tanking". Buffalo passed the 1st part rather easily. They put themselves in position to get the highest draft picks.

They have failed in the 2nd part because incompetent management and ownership. Sound familiar.

Would you trade the Buffalos roster and prospects for the Flyers roster and prospects?

I'm sure it's a great solace to a fanbase that has MISSED THE PLAYOFFS FOR THIRTEEN STRAIGHT SEASONS and has had their generational draft pick force a trade out of the organization that they've won more games than a rebuilding Flyers the last 3 seasons.

Do you think that you can accurately assess a skater playing 6 mins a night?
I frankly think the Flyers should switch teams with the Phantoms, so we can accurately assess the AHLers in a big-minutes NHL environment. That's the important thing.

It comes down to decent goalie play.
Only a few goalies can carry a team, Shesterkin, Hellenbuyck, Bob (when he's on).
But bad goalies can deep six a team.

3 straight seasons the Sabres have won more games than the Flyers. Including 2 seasons where Charles Entertainment Fletcher was "competing".

But sure. THEY'RE the the cautionary tale here.

Hmm, have the Flyers had a top five pick force a trade out of the organization lately?

The objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.
Uh, Gauthier was never IN the organization, he was a college player.
Eichel was a major part of Buffalo's team.

Do not disagree.

It will be more than just the goalies. As someone mentioned earlier look at the top 4. That is not playoff caliber at all. They have noting in house to help out for their playoff march.

So will they use some of those picks to acquire someone if they are still hanging around? If so what type will they look for?

Property of the orginization. That is semantics.

There are many more teams that lose than win every year, so pointing out that failures isn't as good of an indicator as observing how success was achieved.

Since the lockout the only team to win a Cup without a top 5 pick is the 2008 Detroit Red Wings.

The only teams besides the 2008 Wings to win without a top 5 pick they themselves had drafted were the 2023 Golden Knights (Eichel/Pietrangelo - trade/FA) and the 2007 Ducks (Pronger/S. Niedermeyer - trade/FA).

11 of those 19 Cup winning teams had 2 or more top 5 picks they themselves have drafted.

Some rebuilds can wallow in mediocrity , but the path to success has more often than not been a result of allowing a team to properly fail and get rebuilt around top talent. It's not the only model but it's been the most viable model in the cap era.

Let's look at that top 4:
York - Sanheim CF 47.73%, xGF 49.57%, HDCF 50.20%
(8th in the league in minutes)

These are small samples:
Seeler - Drysdale CF 46.07%, xGF 51.12%, HDCF 56.90%
Zamula - Risto CF 50.79%, xGF 51.43%, HDCF 50.90%

York - Sanheim held their own against the toughest matchups.
Comes down to Drysdale, he has the perfect partner in Seeler, but he has to raise his game and live up to his draft status.
Zamula - Risto are fine for the 3rd pair.
