PWHL Backup Goaltenders: Who’s Hot, Who’s Not

A third of the way through the 24-25 PWHL campaign, all six teams have given their backup goalies at least one start. With this longer season (30 games rather than 24), using starting and backup netminders strategically is a decision that could seriously affect a team’s chances of making the playoffs.

As well, a goalie who has had some rest is sure to be an important asset in the post-season. We saw the Walter Cup champion Minnesota Frost employ both of their goalies (Maddie Rooney and Nicole Hensley) in their run to the ultimate prize. Rooney and Hensley each won three games in the playoffs).

On the flip side, it appeared that last year Ottawa might have over-relied on their starter Emerance Maschmeyer, who appeared in 23 of 24 games. The team missed the playoffs with a loss in their final game of the year. Would an extra start for their reliever Sandra Abstreiter have helped their chances or did they not trust her to deliver?

This season, with very capable backups in all six cities, there’s no reason not to split starts more evenly to assure that either netminder is confident and ready to backstop a team if the need arises. ...

Spooner’s Return to Practice A Welcome Sight for the Sceptres

On Monday, the Toronto Sceptres got two very pleasant surprises in the form of Natalie Spooner and Megan Carter, who joined the team for a full practice.

“It felt like Christmas morning for everyone, seeing them back there.” is how Renata Fast put it, after injured players Natalie Spooner and Megan Carter joined the team for their first full practice on Monday.

“We had a meeting Saturday with medical strength conditioning, obviously with Gina [Kingsbury-Sceptres GM]. And they thought that everything's been trending in the right direction and that both Spooner and Carter could practice today,” reported coach Troy Ryan.

Spooner has been rehabbing an ACL injury since last May, and Carter was not cleared to play at the start of the season, so both have been skating together before and after practice, working diligently to get back to a team that can really use both. ...

Carter was the team’s second-round pick in the 2024 draft (12th overall) after a stellar season at Northeastern. Spooner was not only the PWHL’s leading scorer, but also named the Most Valuable Player at the end of season. ...

PWHLPA hires Malaika Underwood as new executive director

The Professional Women's Hockey League Players Association on Wednesday announced the hiring of Malaika Underwood to take over as executive director starting in March.

Underwood has 20 years of experience as a sports consultant and working with numerous players associations, while specializing in brand marketing and licensing initiatives. She will replace Brian Burke, who viewed his role as the PWHLPA's head as temporary when the league launched some 18 months ago.

"From day one, it was imperative that the union find long-term leadership capable of sustaining and building on what the players have fought to create," Burke said in a statement. "Malaika Underwood is that leader. Her vision, expertise, and commitment to players make her the perfect choice. I am excited to support her transition into this role and look forward to seeing women's hockey continue to thrive." ...
