Boston Fleet center embraces second-year pro life
By Angelina Berube | ...
Dec 15, 2024

Walking by the weight room or on the bench or ice, Lexie Adzija’s presence is known. The Boston Fleet forward in the Professional Women’s Hockey League is one of the loudest on her team – and that’s a good thing.

The 24-year-old, second-year professional takes pride in making her teammates smile and lifting their spirits up.

“I’m someone who’s a big energy giver to my team,” Adzija said. “I find when I do that, it makes me smile a bit more too knowing I made someone else’s day.” ...

PWHL: What to Watch, December 15-21

The PWHL is back from the international break! Here are our picks for games to pay attention to this week.

Tuesday, December 17 at 7 p.m. Eastern

Boston Fleet vs Ottawa Charge

Fleet Captain Hilary Knight owns one of the seven (!!!) 3-game point streaks in the league right now. Will she extend that versus the Charge defense? Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer has a 0.927% save percentage (third best in the league, just behind Boston's Aerin Frankel at 0.937%), so it should be a fun matchup. ...

Wednesday, December 18 at 7 p.m. Eastern

New York Sirens vs Toronto Sceptres

No matter what, this game would have made our What to Watch because VP writers Sam will be in attendance! But there are so many other reasons to pay attention to this game, namely two of the three stars of the week from right before the break: rookie Sarah Fillier (first star) and Alex Carpenter (third star). ...

Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m. Central

Minnesota Frost vs Ottawa Charge

Look at Ottawa getting two games in the week after the break! This will be game two of a five game road trip, their longest stretch away from home all season. Does that mean they'll be tired, or will they be rejuvenated while the Frost are shaking off the ... uh, frost? Minnesota home crowds have been historically hot, even in the chill of Midwestern winter, and that's a hard environment to play in. ...

How 'understated' Izzy Daniel found her way to the Toronto Sceptres top line

Smarts and skating helped Daniel carve out a role, even when invites to top teams didn't come

Karissa Donkin · CBC Sports · Posted: Dec 18, 2024 3:00 AM CST | Last Updated: December 18

Toronto Sceptres GM Gina Kingsbury was surprised to see Izzy Daniel still on the draft board when Toronto made the final pick of the third round of the PWHL draft last June.

The forward from Minneapolis, Minn., had just become the first player for Cornell University to win the top prize for a player in women's NCAA hockey, the Patty Kazmaier Award. She finished her final college season with 59 points in 34 games. ...

But despite her standout season at Cornell, Daniel had to wait a couple of rounds to hear her name called in a deep draft class that included national team regulars like Cayla Barnes and Hannah Bilka, as well as top European talent. ...

Four skaters net their first PWHL goal in New York's win over Toronto
Associated Press
December 19, 2024 - 12:27am

NEWARK, N.J. — Noora Tulus scored the first of four New York goals in the second period and the Sirens used the momentum to post a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Sceptres on Wednesday night in their home opener.

The onslaught had the oddity of including the first PWHL goal for Tulus, captain Micah Zandee-Hart and Emmy Fecteau. Jaime Bourbonnais also scored.

“We could hear the fans from the bench tonight, they were really loud, and I think we are so grateful to have such good fans," Fecteau said. "I would say they brought the energy today and that really helped us through this win.” ...

Mental health awareness gets the victory as PWHL teams from Minnesota and Ottawa meet

The Minnesota Frost defeated Ottawa on a night when the Charge’s Gabbie Hughes and her family made certain a lost teammate and an important cause weren’t forgotten.

By Cassidy Hettesheimer
The Minnesota Star Tribune
December 20, 2024 at 12:51AM

There’s a reason why — of all nights to talk about mental health — the Minnesota Frost chose to talk about it when the Ottawa Charge rolled into St. Paul.

Ottawa’s Gabbie Hughes knew why, as she stepped up for the ceremonial puck drop Thursday next to her dad, Terry.

Overhead on the Jumbotron at Xcel Energy Center flashed a picture of Hughes, a Lino Lakes native, with two young hockey players that her dad coached, sisters Sophie and Rachel Wieland. ...

In 2021, 14-year-old Sophie took her own life. In her memory, her coaches and teammates’ parents — and Hughes — helped found the nonprofit organization “Sophie’s Squad” to help destigmatize the discussion of mental health among young athletes. ...
