2024-25 Prospects Thread: As We Wait For Alexander

This surprises me, because if any program would have a lot of NIL available and would prioritize allocating their NIL to ice hockey over football or basketball, it would be North Dakota.
yeah, same thought I had with it initially. Figured NoDak, Denver, and the Hockey East schools (well, maybe not UConn since BB is a bigger deal there) would be the exceptions that prove the rule.

Yeah, hockey at UConn is at best a distant 3rd behind men's basketball and women's basketball. And then comes the question of football with UConn, because despite it not being a huge program there's still a lot of revenue that football will generate for other programs.

ND and Denver were the first couple that came to mind (also the other Minnesota programs) as well as some of the Beanpot programs. BC is another like UConn where ice hockey is a big deal, but where does it fall in their NIL versus basketball and football?

Well it’s interesting to see what the portal changes for some players. I don’t really enjoy it but it works for some guys. Cale Makar’s brother looked like an oaf playing a lower role for UMass, he goes to Maine and blows up…and now he’s signed and playing in the AHL.

I saw Perron live once and have watched a bunch of his games. He’s tiny, and it really stands out because the NCAA is already a short guys game and he looks small still. Yet he’s generally the most skilled guy on the ice. He didn’t really put up lots of points and was definitely not a featured player last season on a deep team. I’m not sure how this year went but he hasn’t really lit it up yet, so switching teams suggests something just wasn’t right there. Guys this talented tend to shine in the NCAA despite their size. He’s a slick little fella.

It’s a bold move Cotton, we’ll see if it pays off for him.

Odds of Canes offering an ELC?

The way we rushed to sign guys into Chicago I’d say better than 50%, but the move he’s made here suggests he’s not convinced he’s done enough in the NCAA’s so maybe we haven’t shown him much love. So I’m dropping it back to a super convincing 50/50.

He no doubt has the skill. He’s probably even better with the puck than Blake was down there. As Tripp would say about Stank, “Can he get to the middle, because if he can he’s gonna make it.” Perron is not unlike Stank in terms of skill.

Speaking of prospects: a 2020 re-draft ranking by Elite Prospects:

More prospect stuff.....the highs and lows of drafting.....while Tulsky/Borg hit a home run in 2020, their 2022 looks awful (in particular drafting Gleb at 60 with Hudson to Canadians at 62). Of course, they did get KK by giving up their first that year too:

I would drop L. Raymond out of the top 10 there. Color me not impressed even though he has amassed a decent points total. I just look at 3-10 and think, I could argue I'd rather have any of those folks than him.

Hot take: I've said this before, but what about a hockey trade sending Svech to the Rags straight up for Laf. Fresh starts for both. Similar "type" of players?

Meh, you can’t look at it like that. There’s always some guy behind your guy who was better. Some years you get lucky and some years you don’t, and I do believe there’s a significant portion of this that is pure luck. I don’t agree with our philosophy of so many small euro players or guys who are really one way oriented. We are very Rod centric. So even if we draft a Datsyuk he’d have to be playing at a Datsyuk level the day he showed up to really have a chance with us. We also are neglecting the players the coach would actually play, some of which could develop the offense as they go. It’s just as likely a guy with size puts the skills together as it is likely a smaller super skilled euro gets strong enough and plays enough defensively to excel at the NHL level for a guy like Rod. Yes, you can find a Janksowsky for cheap but you can always find an under utilized smaller euro player with good skill that doesn’t consistently score (or play tough on the boards, puck battle or backcheck very well) for cheap too.

I think we should just be drafting all types of players instead of hyper focusing as much as we seem to do. The Artamonov pick is a great example. Wasn’t considered a high end scorer (probably still isn’t), was drafted for his high paced engine/forecheck but he’s showing some pop already. More of that please. That guy always had a chance to play for Rod.

Okay - why is there no information on Forsmark? Who has he offended so badly? At 20 years old, he is in his second full year of SHL and the only defenseman 20 or younger outscoring him is Axel Sandin-Pelikka. In fact - he may be only player 20 or younger at any position outscoring him. He plays over 18 minutes/game and was a plus 11 - 3rd on the team. Depending on Judo skills - could he be the Swedish Chatfield?

That's actually one of the reasons I like the late flyer on Avramov as well. Big guy that plays a physical game, but has shown offense at the lower level in spurts? Sure why the hell not. Worst case, if he has any kind of hockey IQ and good skating ability, you get a guy that you can develop into another Lorentz where, yeah maybe he's a journeyman grinder which is always useful, but maybe you get another Warren Foegele instead.

Your points are well taken (I agree with you on the drafting)_....however, the nature of fandom is to cheer or lament at these type of situations.

I remember the '77 draft when Bossy was drafted (my favorite player ever) and Leafs, Rangers and in particular Montreal fans lamented the fact for years and years that they missed on drafting Bossy.

While I am not opposed to moving on from Svech for the right price I do think it's too early to give up in him.
That being said if I do it it's to a team out west. We have seen how talented he is and the last thing any of us should want is for him to figure it out and play us more than twice a year.
