Disappointing prospect have to say. So far!
When the pick was made (and I was actually at this draft), I was fine with it. Nurmi was a kid I had been familiar with and was seen as one of the 7-10 best Finnish prospects that year and a likely top 100 pick. As such, just fine.
I figured particularly Kautonen must know what he's doing (as opposed to the later pick of the unranked, overage Good Bogg).
Admittedly, I was looking at who was still available before the pick was made and found myself hoping they'd grab one of Aram Minnetian, Carter Southeran, or a Cam Allen, who was dropping at the time (had been for most the season after a fantastic rookie year in the OHL during his DY-1). All are Dmen.
Ironically, Nurmi and Allen are now teammates on London's juggernaut.
And Allen has 2-2-4 and +8 in the 7 playoff games thus far.
Also interesting when thinking about Kautonen's read on Finns is that winger Tuomas Uronen entered that season looking like one of the top 3-5 Finns whatsoever after a strong showing at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, but had a mild to poor winter. He dropped considerably, with some publications only having him in the HM section. He then ended up going late in the 7th round to Vegas.
Born 12 days after Nurmi, he too played OHL hockey this year - and put up 90 points. And another 6 in 6 PO games.
PS) While we're at it, Good Bogg spent the bulk of this season in Sweden's 3rd league, where he put up 4 points and a -3 rating after having 0 points and a -7 in 15 2nd league games. He's now 21. On the ice, there's been absolutely no indication of this particular player having ever given any reason whatsoever to having been selected. And I don't recall ever hearing the Islanders talk about or report on him in any capacity.
Mind you, he wasn't to be found in any draft guides. He was an overager who was off the map. Granted, he did have an interesting DY-1 including a U18 Worlds appearance.
