GDT: 2024 25 Other Games Around the League

Unless the oilers commit to a rebuild, McDavid is more valuable to the oilers than pretty much anything realistic in a trade return. Since they just signed Drai, it's unlikely they commit.

And by that I mean that even if McDavid says he's not re-signing, they wont trade him and will try to win with him
It takes guts to do that, and Edmonton is lacking in that key trait.

But what they are lacking is the ability to not big-brain everything and just ice a complete roster. Jeff Jackson has done a pretty garbage job IMO. This is a guy who prioritized signing Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson over Broberg and Holloway - he's not thinking for the future (if at all), so they need every chance to win wth McDavid on the roster. They wont sell him or rebuild if there is a chance at anohter year.

To think, we’d have jumped at a Skinner+26 1st for Blackwood+3rd deal. Around the time the Colorado trade happened, it was rumored EDM was content with goaltending. I expect that’s part of why Grier pulled the trigger. With Edmonton out, Carolina and CBJ were the only other contenders and both of those opted not to add a goalie.

Blackwood would have made way more sense for them than Walman. Imagine if trading for Blackwood means #1G I’d solved and McDavid signs long term.

Let’s hope for an Edmonton sweep this year, followed by a collapse next year. Mid-1st in 2026 draft will be real solid :)

Or even better they collapse and the pick gets transferred to 27 and McDavid signs elsewhere and they fall off a cliff and Sharks get a top pick.

If Edmonton offers McDavid signed, long-term, for Dickinson, Eklund, and whoever is picked in 2025, do you say yes?
No, we're not any one player away from being a playoff team, eroding our prospect depth to put a band-aid solution on our much deeper problems brings us further away from being competitive, not closer to it

Just stay the course, keep picking high-end prospects and adding marginal veteran help at reasonable prices, selling the farm for McDavid would literally destroy our hopes of rebuilding

That also probably isn't a realistic offer for McDavid even without an extension, 30 other teams beat that offer

To actually compete with what teams would be willing to trade for him you're trading all of the following players/assets and probably more:

Smith
Eklund
Dickinson
2025 1st

Without all of those players on the table (and likely more) someone will easily outbid us by actually offering a top-line, prime aged roster player to pair with Draisaitl along with a pile of futures

The acquisition cost for a potential McDavid trade would he crippling for a team in the Sharks' position, our only attractive assets are all completely untouchable, we have to keep slogging along

I think Buffalo with young defensive depth would be a good trading partner for McDavid. Granted McDavid would not want to play in Buffalo.

They could trade Power, Byram , 25 1st, +

McDavid though if he is smart would just take it to UFA. Why gut your new team by making them trade for you.

Players don't do this calculus.

How strange to think that in an alternate world, Edmonton trades their first for Blackwood, and are pilloried for it. Yet they were generally complimented for trading that same pick for Walman...

0% chance McDavid signs with the Sharks, why are we even discussing that?

It's pretty obvious the Bruins, Rangers and Leafs have been preparing their cap situations to make him a massive offer if he leaves Edmonton.

I would love seeing McDavid join the leafs and not get a cup in the process.

I'm really not trying to punk on Zetterlund, but his shots will continue to get deflected if he's constantly dusting off the puck.

Is he just adjusting to Ottawa? Is it playoff jitters? Or was his performance in SJ a mirage?

Leaning towards mirage. There's a lot to like about him since he "looks" like he'd be a top 9 power forward that can be a reliable F1/F3 but his wall game is practically non existent so he's bad defensively and not reliable on the forecheck . He's more a decent F3 that's swole.

You can see how he can improve, though. He's just not there yet
