I don't generally like explaining the joke unless doing so is funny in and of itself, but:

I'm poking fun at the fact that not long ago Vlasic made some comments to a reporter about being miffed there's no award for defensive d-men because he was never seriously considered for a Norris.

So the idea of recognizing another defensive d-man as Norris-worthy but not Vlasic feels like it should set him off. Especially our board-meme-version of Vlasic that's constantly salty/combative/on-edge.
Teesh-gnashing intensifies...

I mean Canada got 1 ...

I'm glad Canada won but honestly that could have went either way. USA had chances to end it and didn't

Did Binnington outplay Hellebuyck? Did not have money down for that one
I was thinking maybe he could have gotten MVP of the game instead of McDavid who only got it for scoring the GWG and just two minutes before being awarded it confessed that he was having a terrible game.

Everyone talks about how Matthews is this defensive stalwart, and I just haven't seen it.

And for all his goal-scoring prowess...he had some big opportunities to score and again, just couldn't do it. A 50 or 60-goal scorer should be a huge part of your arsenal. A 30-goal guy is some great secondary scoring...
Blocked shots its all about blocked shots, thats why he is supposedly a defensive stalwart. In other words he is good at having the puck accidently hitting him, as you never actually see him purposely give up his body to make the block.

And notably, they played a completely penalty free game themselves, impressive work to commit zero infractions, got to give them credit for being so perfectly disciplined
I think it’s just as impressive that the US only got called for one themselves especially when Sloth from The Goonies (Brady)was out there swiping at guys after every whistle. Either way, bloody stoked on the victory

I think the whole tournament was a win for hockey. I had friends who haven’t seen a minute of hockey texting me excitedly during games — it was a really great showcase. I do wonder if teams are going to be upset at all the injuries and not want to do it again, but either way, it was great to watch such insanely good hockey… I haven’t even seen *good* hockey in a while.

That Canadian anthem singer was one of the worst I've ever heard of any anthem in my entire life.
My Canadian father and I 💯 agreed.
Mathews is cementing the fact he's not a big game guy
I thought he looked pretty solid.
Is a fumbled shot really a great pass?
Thought it was a pretty good pass into tight space actually. Greasy "hard ice" goal.
So are we repeating the exact same outcome as the 2010 olympics?

Usa wins round robin, both make finals, gold medal game goes to overtime. Golden goal for crosby.
Wow. Nice call! Except it's the CURRENT best player in the world this time.

The hockey was so ridiculously good. It really puts into perspective how far away we are... We don't (yet) have a single player at this level. Pucks were controlled, zone exits and entries were clean, small mistakes led to huge chances against, passes were crisp and on the tape. Wasn't always flashy but the often simple, direct skill was insane.

Until the OT GWG. I don't think I've seen someone that open in the slot in my beer league. What the hell!? THAT was Matthews completely blowing his assignment.

The passing really stood out to me, not just long passes but short little touch passes done at light speed, under pressure, that would immediately get the team going the other way. The transition was so impressive on both sides.

I mean, it’s the best of the best, so we’d be cup contenders if we looked even close to being as good as either team, but yeah it certainly made the Sharks look like an intermediate adult beer league.

It also just reminds me how good the Thornton/Marleau Sharks were. Like yeah, we didn’t win a cup and they had weaknesses, but those teams were excellent and very fun to watch.

That was peak playoffs Matthews, had to know it was coming once he declared a game 7 :naughty:

Been wondering where to stick a comment in about this.

Even in the cases of Sweden and Finland, which were hardly All Star rosters, the puck came out of the defensive zone almost immediately once the defense got control of the puck and most of the passes were on point. It just highlighted even more for me how awful we are at that end of the ice and how we should not get precious about any of our defensemen on this roster because we're not even in the ballpark of competency on that end.

The offense will get better as we continue to add skilled players and get more experience for our younger guys, but the defense needs massive help and new players.

I wouldn't blame Matthews for the GWG. Adam Fraud lost Marner off the draw, wasn't in position to block the rim around the boards and left Matthews to essentially defend a 2-on-1.
