2024/25 Oilers Prospect Thread

I see they're talking about Emil Larmi and Melker Thelin going to Farjestad next year.

Hopefully that means the rumour of Jonsson coming over is true.
To me it’d be a mistake to bring Jonnson over next year. With Stauffer already talking about the org bringing in a guy to challenge Pickard as the 1B next year that’d mean the guy who loses that battle will be the starter in Bakersfield and if there’s an established guy there the backup likely won’t get much time. Jonsson would be much better served spending a year in the SHL before coming over.

I think Stauffer is kind of out to lunch on that one. Bringing in a guy to challenge Pickard just means you're giving one of them away on waivers.

They should prioritize developing a goaltender, IMO.

If he's not ready next year should be a massive year for O'Reilly and Nicholl.
I swear its never a bad idea to draft London Knights players. That system just puts out so many NHLers.
Even if he scores 100pts+ in London it wouldnt really mean much. A RHC who can PK and win faceoffs is a big need in Edmonton with McDavid\Drai in their prime. If O'Reilly can be that player then we have a cheap inhouse solution. Fear is that Bowman would trade him away for immediate help.

Maybe Oilers signing Tomasek allows them to keep SOR in juniors.

Yah, you can't assume Pickard clears. In the end though the goal should not be to upgrade Pickard. It should be to upgrade Skinner. If you had a better starter Pickard at his salary is a perfectly decent backup.

Stauffer has been pretty bang on with his subtle hinting as of late, pretty accurately predicting Walman as a trade target and the signings of Tomasek and Samanski so I think its more likely than not that he’s got some insight on how the org is feeling on this one as well. But even aside from that, with Jonsson you’re hoping he follows the development path that Arvid Soderblom took: dominant season in Allsvenskan at 21, continuing that into a successful spot in the SHL at 22 then jumping across the pond the following season. It’s just better for him to spend a year in SHL versus potentially being a guy who bounces between AHL backup/ECHL here. Especially when you’ve got Brochu making a case to earn himself an ELC right now as well.

Hardest Worker:

Western Conference:
Brady Martin, Soo Greyhounds (33)
Easton Wainwright, Sarnia Sting (13)
Connor Clattenburg, Flint Firebirds (12)

Best Bodychecker:

Western Conference:
Connor Clattenburg, Flint Firebirds (27)
Matthew Andonovski, Kitchener Rangers (22)
AJ Spellacy, Windsor Spitfires (12)

Best Defensive Forward:

Western Conference:
Sam O’Reilly, London Knights (27)
Carey Terrance, Erie Otters (19)
Connor Clattenburg, Flint Firebirds (15)

Soderblom only ended up playing 20ish games in the SHL as a backup. That's likely about what Jonsson might get if he stayed. I'm not sure that's better develop than if he were to come over.

It's no secret that the Oilers love Jonsson. Their goalie scout has been spending a ton of time with him. They seem to want to get him over ASAP and, if they like him that much, they can control how much he plays if he's in Bako.

Oilers should take Jonathan Kapageridis with a late pick this year. He is a tremendous outlet passer who is probably falling under the radar a bit this season. Heading to Vermont next season via the OHL.

Connor Clattenburg on a 5-on-3 kill, causes the turnover for a 2-on-0 break, probably instantly regrets passing it, but still manages to get the Birds on the board. We'll see if it stays Clattenburg's SH goal or if he just gets the assist for all that effort.

The Firebirds attempt to stave off elimination tomorrow, or Day and Clattenburg could be ATOs for Bakersfield.

Sam O'Reilly had this assist on Noah Read's hat trick goal. Inexplicably, he only picked up one point in a London curb stomping. Is William Nicholl alive? London sweeps and moves onto the 2nd round.

---

Dalyn Wakely made it 3 secondary assists this game. Up to 9 apples in 4 games. EDIT: Spoke too soon, he got the ENG. 10 points in 4 games.

Why isn't he signed yet? It'd be great for him and Samanski to have a fellow German in Bako next season.
Agree. I am a big fan of Munzenberger and am real concerned and dont understand why they would not have signed him at the very least for Backo unless he did not want an AHL contract but real concerned. Also signing Maata to an AHL deal should have been done. He is better than Berglund and even Stonehouse with leadership skills to boot.

Samanski's dad is Canadian, so I don't think he'll have a tough time adjusting.

For Munzenberger, my guess would be they don't see enough there for a spot in Bako. They clearly want guys that can move the puck and Munzenberger struggled a ton with that at a level of hockey in the NCAA that's probably lower than even Canadian University play.

They're likely rumoured to be so busy with European UFAs because it'll be really easy to find a better player with more potential.

I wish I had a nickel for everytime I've stated the exact same thing on here and tried to convert the unwashed.:D

First NCAA is not lower level play than CIS and secondly Munz did not struggle to move the puck. If you are going by points I would ask you loom at the team. Prior to this year the whole Vermont team had horrendous goals for. Germany is not going to invite him to the world championships over many who are in the DEL if he can't move the puck. Ya his game is physical and defensive but you need those players as well.

There's varying levels in the NCAA. Vermont plays very few teams that aren't at the bottom of their conference or indepedents.

He definitely struggles to move the puck. That's based on viewings not points. Even the most physical and defensive guys need some ability to move the puck at the lowest level to have a chance in the NHL.

I don't think Germany is too picky. Can you name two defensemen on that team? haha. I'm mainly talking higher level leagues like the SHL, Liiga, KHL, etc. for UFAs. The DEL isn't really pumping out NHL defensemen.
