2024/25 Oilers Prospect Thread

So BIK KARLSKOGA have won a round in the playoffs. To be clear I haven't watched any of the games, just filling you in on the results.

I have never really followed Hockey Allsvenskan, it will be interesting to see if Karlskoga can advance to SHL.

They were 2nd seed taking on 8th seed Oskarshamn. Jonsson played the first game and finished with a 6-2 win and a .909 sv%. BIK went to their veteran goalie for game two and lost 2-3 in OT, same for game three lost 2-3 in OT. I don't know why exactly but they stuck with the vet in net and pulled out the series with back to back 2-1 OT wins and a 3-2 win to go 4-2 in the series. Shots heavily favoured Karlskoga, the Oskarskamn goalie was probably the best in the series. I don't know why they didn't go back to Jonsson but it paid off.

I can't find playoffs stats, but it should be:
Jonsson GP 1 W 1 L 0 GA 2 SV% .909
Volden GP 5 W 3 L 2 GA 10 SV% .913

It appears the coach has trust in the older goalie, it will be interesting to see how much Jonsson plays next round.

The silver lining, Jonsson is undefeated once again. 1-0 in the playoffs this year.
He's been out with injury since game 1.

Sam O'Reilly opens the scoring in Game 1 vs. Owen Sound. PPG

William Nicholl has this assist off a faceoff win.

---

Connor Clattenburg returned to the lineup for Game 1 vs. Kitchener. He got into a scrap in the first minute.

Nathan Day made 29/33 saves, the Firebirds fell in OT.

---

@Brock with his ballot of the OHL coaches poll has plenty of appearances from Oilers prospects. I was pleasantly surprised to see Clattenburg appear in more categories than just 'Best Body Checker'.

Do you have a link to Brock's article?

(All by their conference, not league wide)
  • O'Reilly as the best PK'er and in the conversation for best defensive forward.
  • Clattenburg in the conversation for best body checker and (surprisingly) defensive forward
  • Nicholl as most improved player.
I'm curious to see if Clattenburg can get his foot in the door at the pro level. He's never going to put up points, but he has the size to be a Matt Martin type; or Duhaime, if who want a more modern day example.

Is this Samanski guy over hyped? What do you guys know about him?

Sure sounds like the power forward the team could use when Kane departs.

No sure that Samanski has actually signed though.

Connor Ungar (from what I have read) is having a decent season in the ECHL so there may be some hope there for a potential #1 goalie down the road.

I haven't heard his name mentioned at all but just digging into the stats Ungar has a .903 at 23 years old while Brochu at 22 has a .924, it looks to me like he is having a really bad season.

I think Ungar was player of the week in the ECHL several times so I l think he has had a decent season. I don't know much about the guys playing in front of him.

He had a horrific start, so he must be doing well to get his stats up to where they are.

I think he had something like a 4 GAA and .840 SV% through his first 10ish games.

I don’t think he’ll ever be more than an AHL option, but it’s promising.

Yes, you are probably right, most likely an AHL goalie but right now if the Oilers have any goalie who is clearly "NHL" quality then it isn't too clear to me :sarcasm:

As for Ungar, yes he seems to have improved and he won player of the week honors in December so there appears to be some improvement. See link below.
