Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

Re-sign Vladdy should be the only priority right now. Spring training is about to start we aren’t going to be trading for an impact bat at this time.

It just seems like we are definitely lacking in the power dept. Bo, Vladdy, and Santa the only 3 legit bats. Everybody else is a bottom of the order bat in a good lineup. Springer, Gimenez, Clement, Kirk, Varsho, are all 7-8-9 hitters, but they will be hitting higher than that in our lineup. Loperfido and Wagner are both projects. What do we have here?

That’s a super player friendly contract for Bregman.
Last rumoured 6 year offer was 156 over 6, I think.
Tidy work there for him.
Should be good for the duration of the deal too at that term.

I agree on Loperfido, but I don't view Wagner as a "project". He's unproven, but I feel confident you can plug him into a major league lineup and get really solid production. He's basically the equivalent to Horwitz last year.

Agreed. Wagner and Roden have good approaches, good hit tools, and good eyes.
Loperfido is the probably the most toolsy guy of the AAA group, and maybe most boom or bust.
Lots of power, but a lot of swing and miss at the mlb level. Not impossible for him to correct.
Guys like Roden and Kasevich could add power with some adjustments. They both hit the ball hard. And OMart has plenty of power if he can continue to control the strike zone.
There might be internal solutions to the 5&6 holes yet - these guys all have good minor league resumes.

I can see a JD Martinez type bat being added which isn't half bad...Weak side DH and a solid bat for late inning ABs off the bench.
I don't love the idea of signing a guy like Martinez, who's mediocre at best and probably pretty bad, to take playing time away from the group of almost-ready young guys. Having said that, most of those young guys are left-handed bats, and if Martinez can come in and hit exclusively against lefties (which he might still be pretty good at) I would be on board.

I just picture him getting way more playing time than that, and I don't like it.

Bergman is overpaid but he’s obviously very good and makes them better.

I’m not sure why the PECOTA standings are so low on Boston. They were already a young team at 81 wins last year and they added Crochet (4.1 bwar), Bergman (4.1 bwar) and Buehler (-1.3 bwar) who should be better. If anything they should probably take a step forward if I’m being honest.

I wouldn't mind JD Martinez on a 1-year deal. He would also serve as a mentor to younger hitters.

In 2023:
.263 AVG, .836 OPS, 139 wRC+ vs. lefties.

First impression is that's a lose lose deal for Boston.

He either sucks and you're stuck with a boat anchor for the next 3 years as your younger pieces go into their prime. Or he's really good and goes right back to market as soon as he can.
If he’s really good and helps them win a World Series, how is that a lose?????

Here's a fun look at two players:
Player A: 4.2% BB / 36.1% K / .197 / .236 / .343
Player B: 6.3% BB / 37.9% K / .261 / .309 / .602

Player A is Loperfido whose didn't tap into his power the way we expected and player B is Teoscar. The thing is that when we look at minor league numbers, Joey walked more and struck out less (other than Teo's 2016). He also hit for more power.

Yes, there are things that need to be fixed, but Loperfido has the skill set that he could become an important part of the team.

Signing Vladdy to an extension does not make our team any better. He's already been here. By not signing him it will make us a lot worse going forward if he walks.

If they are so far apart on numbers, they should really be exploring on trading him before the season starts, in order to get something out of it. The price is only going to increase after the season.
