Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

Astros are in the AL. But in terms of league adjustment, that definitely used to be a thing back in the day - you'd see starting pitcher ERA jump like half a point when guys went from NL to AL. But with the addition of the DH slot in the NL and the sharp increase in the number of interleague games I think that probably went away.
Fair points mitigating some of the adjustment, I haven’t seen or know any data or studies either way….but intuitively there’s still a lot players won’t have seen. I’m not sure how it plays out overall, but similar to the chance to face a starter third time occurring less often than in the past, there’s just so many different arms to see.

... because some managers are so desperate they will do anything to save their hides... I wont name names because I'm not that kind of guy ...

The guy gives off Dexter vibes lmao.

Well colour me surprised. But a 40 year old pitcher? Ugh. We're gonna need on site geriatric care for our starting staff.

With that salary I think one of our current pitchers is on the way out.
Scherzer doesn't provide anything close to enough certainty to justify moving someone out.

Yariel to the pen and steps into the rotation as needed.

At the very least, this is a fun move. Scherzer is an easy Hall of Famer, so even just getting to see him for a season at the end of his career is cool.

I'm trying not to get too excited about what this might mean for Alonso.

Going rate for a starter on a 1 year deal;
Morton
- 41 years old: $15M - 1.1 2024 fWAR
Verlander -
42 years old: $15M - 0.7 2024 fWAR
Scherzer
- 40 years old: $15.5M - 0.6 2024 fWAR
Cobb
- 37 years old: $15M - 0.3 2024 fWAR

Projected 2025 fWAR:

Scherzer: 2.1
Cobb: 1.9
Verlander: 1,4
Morton: 1.4

Guys like Buehler and Kikuchi got $20M. Wacha got $17M. Matt Boyd got $14.5M.

Unlikely. This is to push Yariel to the pen
Fwiw, there have always been questions about Yariel as a starter (even before he pitched in mlb for the first time). As a reliever, he projects as a set up guy at worst and closer at best.

Awesome! Hoping he can regain a bit of his form. Like I said earlier, he's a psychopath masquerading as a baseball player. Incredibly intense guy that brings an attitude not on the team.

Jays bypass Seattle, Rays and Red Sox in projected WAR. They have the last playoff spot according the projections. Alonso and a pen arm will do wonders. With Alonso, you are close to the O's and the top 5 teams in projected WAR.
