Was going to say that if the Jays get Sasaki and sign Vladdy to a long-term extension, that will gain Shapiro and Atkins a lot of grace back in my books (along with many other fans). Those two are a minimum. Beyond that will inspire some confidence in the duo, which at this point is virtually nil.

That would be my thinking BUT as mentioned by someone earlier until he signs (Roki) all bets are off. It would be a totally embarrassing trade though if Roki doesn’t sign here. Straw is pretty awful. .624 OPS in 1700 some odd AB

Fact that he still hasn’t signed leads me to believe money isn’t the motivating factor and Jays did this to overcompensate as they are in slight panic.

Huh. I usually assume these guys are just guessing based on actual reports to try to break stories, but that one from last night seems too specific to just be a guess, and it's not like there were other reports about this before it happened.

More likely they don't want to get it wrong and get blasted. Even if they are 90% sure he's signing, the risk of being wrong would call into question everything for them going forward.

If the Jays don't end up landing Sasaki, taking on Shaw is going to be spun narrative wise as an act of desperation by lame duck Shatkins (Shapiro being lame duck basically makes Atkins pseudo-lame duck) that failed.

The timing of this coming right after the Padres were reported as being out of the Sasaki sweepstakes, making the Dodgers the clear favourite in the media, is going to make it even easier to spin this narrative against Shatkins.

I've already seen some Shatkins apologists spin this narratives themselves, and say they wouldn't even be able to defend it. Which means you just know every other Jays fan is going to jump all over this if they fail.

Adding to what I said earlier, BNS kind of thinking similarly. If the Jays miss out on Sasaki, this Myles Shaw trade will not look good on Shatkins.
