Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

Nice. I'd love one more solid pen addition, but Hoffman to close and then Garcia, Green, and Swanson as secondary guys with Sandlin, Burr, etc... not too bad. A better lefty would be really helpful.

Great Baltimore backed out because of shoulder concerns so we come in and grab him. Garcia arm fell apart at the end of the year. Maybe be another fun bullpen year

This failed physical with Baltimore worries me but otherwise good signing
It doesn't worry me really.

Baltimore is a budget team and needs to be incredibly smart with their money. They can't afford a mistake so they backed out. Toronto's medical team obviously looked at things and don't feel it's an issue.

Pretty good deal.
I’m guessing Quintana might be next…I’ll guess a 2yr deal for an aav around whatever they were willing to spend on Burnes per year minus Hoffmans 11.

Quintana is not getting close to Burnes money on a yearly.

Considering Burnes got $35 million, I doubt Quintana would take up much more than half of what's left there.
Sure hope he wouldn’t.

In this market he could do well though, maybe up to $15-17M on a one year. Probably a lower AAV on a 2 yr, maybe $24-28M.

Yeah, not meaning to quibble over the numbers….just saying they can earmark that money for a closer and a starter, rather than just a starter.
Estimating, seeing how guys like Matt Boyd got ~20 million.

So The Jays and Phillies essentially swap Romano for Hoffman. That will be interesting to look back on in a few years. I don't mind the change.

The Jays bullpen will also get a boost from Yariel Rodriguez if we can sign a 5th starter.
