They have already screwed it up. They likely could have gotten him signed for 250 - 300M 2-3 years ago. Now it’s going to cost them 400-500M. Or they lose him for nothing.

They have already cost the team hundreds of millions.

And it’s kinda hard to tell by far your best player that you don’t have the money or don’t think he is worth it after making 700M+ offers to FAs in back to back off seasons.
They needed to lock him up before going big game hunting. Especially considering that they missed.
