Made a couple of good trades when they won a World Series. Didn't he inherit a solid team with good prospects though.

That depleted farm system he left also included Vladdy, Jansen, and some others. And the scouting staff that found Bo and Biggio.
Shatkins then replaced many of those scouts after the 2016 draft.
Shatkins inherited a playoff team (granted an aging one) with the best prospect we have had this century and what have they done with it?
2015 was the year. I don't understand the Royals and their luck but we had the team to win it all that year.

The Jays targets at the deadline includes a number of very recently drafted college bats who were moved aggressively through their previous systems, which was odd since Jays themselves don’t seem to do that much.
So, maybe a lil old for the level, but dude mashed AA in his second pro year. McAdoo’s experience was a lil less explosive, but same draft year and very good overall at AA.
Yeah, McAdoo's numbers have been fantastic at every level since being drafted and then he struggled after the trade. He's only 22 though. I'm way more interested in him than Schreck, but they're both really interesting bats who will be knocking on the door to start the season.
Yeah. McAdoo with a bit more speed and raw power, plus better D versatility.
Both good adds to the system.
So that's Atkins fault? He built a team that made the playoffs. I believe one year was lucky but regardless. Atkins isn't on the field or pitching. He did his job and got them what they needed.
lol yeah it’s his fault, he assembled the team.
The Leafs are on their 3rd GM because they have only managed to win 1 playoff round in the last 8 years.
But according to you it isn’t Atkins fault the team has won less playoff games than the futile Leafs have won rounds.
Pro tip: when you are defending the playoff record of a team that makes the Leafs playoff success look amazing you are doing something wrong…..

There’s speculation that he was heavily involved in the game management. Didn’t they have controversial pitching decision that cost them the play-in game?

I thought it was assistant GM James Click that was rumoured to be heavily involved in that decision.

TORONTO — John Schneider will return to manage the Toronto Blue Jays next season, even though general manager Ross Atkins revealed it was Schneider's decision to remove starter Jose Berrios in the game that abruptly ended the underachieving team's season last Wednesday.
Atkins held his post-mortem press conference on Saturday morning of Thanksgiving Weekend, three days after the Blue Jays suffered a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins to be swept two games to none in the American League Wild-Card series.
After the Blue Jays' seventh straight post-season loss, there was heavy criticism heaped upon Schneider for removing the righty Berrious after 47 pitches and three shutout innings in favour of lefty Yusei Kikuchi.
There was speculation the front office and its analytics department drew up the game plan to pressure the Twins into employing some right-handed batters earlier than they would have liked to.
This would have enabled the Blue Jays to use their effective right-handed relievers Yimi Garcia, Erik Swanson, Jordan Hicks and Jordan Romano, in mid-to-late inning situations.
Atkins denied any influence from the front office on Schneider and his coaching staff's decision.
"I found out about it when you did," Atkins said. "When [Kikuchi] was getting warm in the first inning, it was very clear that we had a strategy to potentially deploy. John Schneider made the decision to deploy that."
"There was not an influence from the office that factored into that, other than maybe it was an organizational strategy communicated to players. When I say organization, I'm including players, many players over the course of the days prior to that strategy."
Atkins disclosed Schneider and his coaches, along with advanced scout Theron Simpson, are the individuals involved in a pre-game assembly to devise the game plan.
The Toronto general manager also remarked the early-game pitching decision, which resulted in a two-run fourth inning for the home side, was not the problem in the season-ending game. A lack of timely hitting prevented the Blue Jays from advancing.
the fault isnt completely his. he assembled 4 playoff teams that have choked in the playoffs. put more of it on the players and let them know how you feel. your basing their playoff records off of not scoring runs, which is on the players. you know how many owners would be happy with making the playoffs 4 times in 9 years.
to be honest, i dont know but i did hear the rumors as well. i cant see that happening. i dont see a guy like shapiro, either being involved or allowing that to happen.
The players absolutely deserve some blame but then still you have to look at who assembled that group of players.
If you are happy with zero playoff victories in the last 8 years good for you. I guess most others here have higher standards than you do.
You must be extremely delighted with all the playoff “success” the Leafs have had.
Imagine no accountability in the world. Guy has been here 9 years and hasn’t won shit and here we are with people saying it’s not his fault.

They have really mishandled this team since last offseason and are now in a state of chaos.
Before that, I think they did a fairly decent job bringing in major league talent via free agency. The farm system never really recovered, and in baseball that’s not unheard of. They are the hardest of the prospects to predict.
Yep the Leafs the last 8 years, have 8 playoff appearances, won 24 playoff games and 1 round.
It’s universally agreed that this is a massive failure.
But in the same time span the Jays have 4 playoff appearances, 0 wins and 0 series. And that poster thinks many owners would be happy with that.
Shatkins is responsible for the scouting staff that failed to build up a successful prospect pool.
Most of the best prospects we graduated since they took over were either drafted/signed by AA and/or the scouting staff he left behind. Shatkins started to replace that scouting staff after the 2016 season and we haven’t had much success since despite multiple high picks.
Vladdy, and Jansen were already here. Bo, Biggio, Moreno, and Kirk were drafted and signed in 2016 by the scouting staff that was replaced that off season.
Part of evaluating management is assessing the state of the business at any time. If Shatkins were fired, how would you evaluate this franchise? Off the field, they probably accomplished their objectives. On the field and in the farm system, the real foundation, is looking ugly. And can get much worse very quickly.
