2024-25 NHLPA Player Poll

Analytics prove otherwise via sheltered o zone starts, d zone starts only with top F lines, and avoiding other teams top F lines.

I agree Hughes may be a fantastic Dman and PKer. We just dont see it.

I agree on the strategic coaching, but when one player gets a full 2+ minutes of ES/PP time over his competition (5 of the top 50 in TOI/GP dont PK and Quinn is literally the lowest), which could equate to 160+ minutes of extra time if healthy or 8-9 games worth of ice time, its easy to pick apart and say "show us the defense."

I've also seen analytics that show Hughes's defensive acumen is just fine. I've seen analytics that show Hughes is offensively and defensively superior to Makar. And hey, according to Google's AI, Hughes is regarded as a top shutdown defender in the league:

"While he may not be the most physically imposing defenseman, he effectively uses his skills to win battles in front of the net and is considered one of the top shutdown defenders in the league."**

Again, if you think Makar is the best defenseman in the league this year, I have no issues with that. There shouldn't be a need to misrepresent Hughes's performance to do so. Remember, the other team can't score if they don't have possession of the puck.

My prediction is that those two will probably ping-pong the Norris trophy for the next decade.

**Yeah, I'm not terribly trusting of AI myself, but at the very least it's scraping content from all over the Internet before analyzing/summarizing what posts are made about Hughes.

Top defenders play on the pk, top defenders play the last min of game winning or losing, Quinn is great but he’s not complete. They gave him the c and his team fell apart and missed the playoffs. Players want out of Vancouver.

Absolute nonsense.

If Makar is truly deserving of the Norris this season, it won't be because of these false claims of Hughes's shortcomings.

If you were so certain of Makar's worthiness, there'd be no need to resort to such absurd statements.

Makar is a deserving winner of the Norris this year. I have no issue with that. There's just no need to fabricate such nonsense about Hughes to justify the award.

I'm surprised Crosby won "most complete player." He's 37 and basically just deployed for offense at this stage. His defensive metrics aren't that good now.

Hard to imagine he's a more complete player than Barkov or Matthews at this point.

I did my own poll among my NHL contacts

Best Overall Goalie: Hutson
Best Overall Forward: Hutson
Best Overall Defenseman: Hutson
Most Complete Player: Hutson
Best Playmaker: Hutson
Best Faceoff Man: Hutson
Smartest Overall Player: Hutson
Best Overall Skater: Hutson
Best Ice: Hutson

Where's Demidov?

Didn't see this posted. Latest poll of 663 players is out: NHLPA Player Poll 2024-25

Relevant Results:

Best Overall Goalie: Vasilevskiy
Best Overall Forward: McDavid
Best Overall Defenseman: Makar
Most Complete Player: Crosby
Best Playmaker: Kucherov
Best Faceoff Man: Crosby
Smartest Overall Player: Crosby
Best Overall Skater: McDavid
Best Ice: Montreal

Also a decent chunk of players voted they'd like to see either PP's end with a shorty, or the 3-2-1 point system adopted.
But the league mvp Mackinnon is no where to be found. Canadian voting bias confirmed for hart . This is voted by the actual players....

Interesting that isn't on the list and he isn't leading the league in points either.
He is on the list.

Read the poll. He is 2nd behind mcdavid .

He is also the only player top 3 in best forward and most complete player. Where is kuch on those lists?

Oh well he can settle for being the best playmaker and not a top 3 player.

Again he isn't the best at anything. That's the point. He is below the best at everything but a great player

I agree, no reason to knock another guy…Makar is the best Dman this year regardless, but it is black and white, not subjective, that Hughes does not generally play against the other teams’ best offensive players.

Not to get picky but Trocheck and Pageau have a 59% FO% to Crosby's measly 57%
Given that it's Crosby, there's probably the notion that he wins "those" faceoffs. Last minute d zone draws, PP draws, etc. Don't have anything to back it up, just a gut feeling.

Also, the players probably didn't know what to do when Bergeron retired, so they just went with a tried and true guy

Heaven forbid you actually read what you're commenting about so you don't look like a complete idiot.
