Men’s Notes: Races for Banners, Tourney Spots Anyone’s Guess

Home Stretch Arrives in Men’s College Hockey

Saturday, March 8, is the final day of the regular season for NCAA Division I men’s hockey, the day when Hockey East and the NCHC close out their league schedules, the last of the six conferences to do so.

That means only four weeks remain until college hockey fully switches to tournament mode. A glance at the conference standings offers the promise of thrilling league races likely going down to the wire.

Currently, the largest gap between first- and second-place teams is in Atlantic Hockey, where Sacred Heart holds a mere five-point edge on Holy Cross. In the NCHC, there’s a tie atop the standings. ECAC Hockey (one point), the Big 10 (two) and Hockey East (three) are also airtight. In the CCHA, which will be decided by winning percentage rather than points, a nascent Augustana program is trying to hold off perennial league power Minnesota State. ...

New Arena Possibility Mentioned in Michigan Feasibility Study

Report Centered Around Potentially Adding Women's Program in Ann Arbor

by Tyler Kuehl/CHN Reporter (@tjku29)

... College Hockey News, via the Freedom of Information Act, acquired the results of a feasibility study about adding women’s hockey at Michigan. Along with the finances and ramifications of adding a second hockey program, the study showed the need for updated facilities and potentially some additions. The women's hockey team at Michigan is currently a club program.

The study, performed by Collegiate Sports Associates (CSA), lays out the groundwork necessary for a women’s hockey team, the overall costs of beginning and operating the new program, and the timeline of when things could get under way. ...

The seemingly most viable option is adding a new arena on campus that would house both teams. The new building, projected to cost around $300 million, would give a new home to both the men’s and the new women’s team. The plan would be to construct a rink with an 8,000-10,000 seating capacity, similar to what is seen at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. ...

Fan and alum, can attest to how much of a mess the program is in. I mostly blame Schafer.
