As a Miami fan/writer, I welcome Arizona State to the NCHC this year and St. Thomas when that happens.

They'll be great additions without being Denver/North Dakota world powers, so it should balance the ticket a bit.

From a rebuilding perspective, league schedules with those two plus St. Cloud and NCAA back-to-back champ Duluth comprising over half of the conference slate have been absolutely brutal.

I just watched MU go 1-21-2 in NCHC play.

... Looking forward to seeing your men play this fall. I hope that's a reciprocal contract because I'd love to visit St. Louis in 2025-26.
As opposed to LU's first weekend visit to Oxford in late October, at least you wouldn't have to worry about finding a nearby lodging option during Lindenwood's home football schedule. 🫤

Breaking Down the NCAA's Most Likely Draft Powerhouses
Catherine Morrison
Jul 21, 2024

Ever wonder which NCAA schools already have a foothold in the PWHL's talent pool? Wonder no more -- here's a list of schools already providing the best players in women's hockey.

The explosion of women’s hockey in recent years has created a real pathway for NCAA student-athletes to make a living playing hockey, instead of having to give up the sport when they graduate. Now, when athletes consider what school to play for, they will want to consider not only their NCAA record but also their draft record for the PWHL. With two drafts under the PWHL’s belt, which schools are becoming draft powerhouses?

The Ice Garden looked at which schools had the highest number of draftees in 2023 and 2024 and compared that to how well the schools have performed in recent history in order to predict which schools might become destinations for athletes looking to go pro. ...

Report out the NCAA will be increasing scholarship limits from 18 to 26, but capping rosters at 26 players. The majority of college teams ran 26+ player rosters this past season. With the D1 average I believe 29-30 players.

According to the latest NCAA press release on this topic the settlement still awaits court approval. So the "guidelines" would seem to be a preemptive attempt to establish limits on member programs based on what are BELIEVED to be the final details of the settlement. The press release contains a lot of hedging content ...
... Next Steps

The settlement must be approved by the court before it becomes final, a process expected to take several months. If the court preliminarily approves the settlement, the class members will be provided notice of the settlement. Class members with claims for monetary damages based on prior conduct will have an opportunity to opt out of the settlement if they choose. Class members—including incoming student-athletes—will also receive notice and be allowed to present objections to the future relief/model to the court.

Unresolved Issues

While approval of the settlement would be a significant step forward, there would still be pending issues to be addressed that highlight the continuing need for federal legislation. These issues include:

The settlement does not resolve the patchwork of state laws, many of which may conflict with the settlement. These laws will need to be preempted by federal legislation in order for the settlement to be effective.

The settlement does not address ongoing efforts to designate student-athletes as employees under state and federal labor and employment laws. These efforts by the NLRB and plaintiffs' attorneys pose a direct threat to both the sustainability of sports programs (especially for non-revenue generating ones) and to the baseline of support provided to all athletes. ...

Locals (and their legal representation) still keeping up their fight against UST building a new dual-purpose arena ...

St. Thomas neighbors file (again) to block construction of 5,500-seat sports arena

Frederick Melo, Pioneer Press
July 22, 2024

Neighborhood residents opposed to a new Division I athletics arena at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul are seeking the equivalent of a legal restraining order against the city and the university, with the goal of stopping construction already well underway off Grand, Cretin and Summit avenues.

The Advocates for Responsible Development filed a motion in the Minnesota Court of Appeals late Monday afternoon seeking to enjoin the university from continuing construction — and the city from allowing construction — of the Lee and Penny Anderson Multipurpose Arena, a 5,500-seat sports facility that will be dedicated to DI hockey and basketball.

On June 8, the Court of Appeals determined that the city had prematurely accepted an environmental review known as an Environmental Assessment Worksheet, without considering the cumulative impacts of other construction projects on campus, namely the new Schoenecker Center, which is located next to the arena and hosts its own recital hall. The court also found that the arena’s approved EAW largely failed to include active mitigation measures for parking, traffic and greenhouse gas emissions beyond passive approaches such as monitoring traffic levels for two years.

“Unfortunately, the City and UST have chosen to ignore this court’s opinion,” reads the homeowner group’s 15-page legal memorandum in support of their motion for injunctive relief. ...

That fight is going to rage on for a little while, ultimately UST will get the arena built, but their timeline will be set back for sure.
