I lived in the Boston area for over a decade, I loved it. Probably prefer it even over Philadelphia. But the fact is that the city has that reputation, and it's by no means all ancient history. Manny Ramirez talked about being the target of that kind of abuse when he played for the Red Sox, and I believe so did David Ortiz. More recently Kryrie Irving talked about it. And not too long ago, I don't remember when exactly but during the time I was living there, the Boston Globe ran an a piece, and I think it was actually a series, on it. So Bostonians are aware of it.

Whether or not it happens more in Boston than other places is pretty hard to tell, but certainly once you acquire that reputation it can be hard to shake. Nowhere is that more true than Philadelphia. Fan behavior there is no worse than NYC or Boston, but because back in the '60s some people has some fun throwing snowballs at a guy dressed as Santa Clause Philaldelphia sports fans are animals.
