The situation is simple for the Bisons if they want a playoff berth: Sweep the Family Guys to pull within 4 points with 6 games remaining after this weekend. In the last five years, the Herd is 6-3-1 against the Mutants. Therefore they should have some degree of confidence. Will the goaltending come through? Will their highly touted forwards generate some offence? Will the depleted defence find enough duct tape to hold it together for the weekend? We’ll see.

Each side has two stories linked on their websites, for your further reading. However, LeagueStat has just the Media Stats page.

The T-irds are in an almost desperate bid to catch MRU in the race for 1st place in the West Division, whilst the Banjo-Cats are simply looking to play spoiler. I have a hunch that the Kittens have an upset left in them before this season is over. If things get tough in this one, the Tweety Birds may have to call upon an old lady armed with an umbrella to fend off the evil Puddy Tats.

On paper, this is the feature match-up of the weekend. The Evil Monkeys and Banjo-Mutts have battled for 1st place several times over the recent decades. Sask puts out a pretty good video stream, for those who have CWTV access. Or you could listen at Huskie Fan’s audio link.

The Dinos’ players and staff on loan to Team Canada’s Universiade team will be back, perhaps with a bit of jet lag. Meanwhile, Holy Trinity came oh-so-close to an upset of UBC last weekend. Although these teams are 3rd and 4th in the West Division, Holy Trinity hasn’t got enough games left on the schedule to make a run at that playoff berth.

FISU-2019-colour-50x50.jpg

Team Canada won a 2nd straight gold medal, however without the Russkies around this loses a lot of lustre. Plenty of other strong hockey countries also do not send teams. Others, like Ukraine, send a U25 national team. Wikipedia has all scores and standings. Here’s a quick recap:

Gold medal: Canada 3 Slovakia 1
Bronze medal: Ukraine 5 U.S.A. 3
5th place: Czechia 2 Kazakhstan 5
7th place: Japan 6 South Korea 1
9th place: Sweden 4 Poland 3 (so)

Quick Summary

Man: J. Hooker (15:56 2nd) , S. Bruce (06:23 3rd) , J. Hooker (11:09 3rd) , J. Arpin (11:45 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Epp (26 shots, 22 saves), Man: Thornton (L) (19 shots, 14 saves), Holt (9 shots, 9 saves)

What a night in the CW. All four games were decided by one goal, and two in a shoot-out.

This loss leaves the Bisons with only a theoretical chance at a playoff berth. Including Saturday’s matinee, they have seven games remaining and, if they win them all, MacEwan would have to win two or fewer of their remaining games. (Or six Bison wins and one MacEwan win, or five Bison wins and no MacEwan wins, to be technically correct.)

For a must-win game, the Bisons came out dead. The generated next to nothing in the first period and fell behind 3-0. Goaltender Kolby Thornton had a defence doing a washing machine impersonation on the first two goals, then came a powerplay marker.

The second period saw a Bison revival. However, two quickies by the Family Guys mid-period chased Thornton from the net in a 5-0 game. The game turned around as the Bisons carried the play. Captain Hooker scored on the PP, and a couple of close shaves ended the period.

I admit that my optimism level was rather low entering the 3rd period. Skylar Bruce (his 9th) and Captain Hooker (his 13th) scored PP goals and suddenly it’s 5-3. Then as the PA announcer was ready to announce the 3rd goal, Jackson Arpin scored on a scramble to make it 5-4. The Bisons still had 8 minutes to tie, and even win, the game. However, Brett Epp in the MacU net held the fort. With less than two minutes left, Dawson Pasternak’s slashing penalty in the offensive zone stifled the comeback, and a last-minute too-many-men penalty was the final nail in the coffin.

This was the feature game of the evening, and it looks like it lived up to its billing. Of course, it started even with the Bison game so I missed it. (I spied on the Jets’ game on my cell phone.) The teams rotated goals all night. Chantz Petruic notched his 13th and 14th goals of the season for the Mutts (including the winner) while Sean Tschigerl scored his 16th and 17th for the Evil Monkeys. They also drew more than 2,000 in Saskatown for this one.

I managed to see the ending of this one, and it was worthwhile. Holy Trinity isn’t much on paper but they are playing hard. They had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 at various points in this game, but needed a late goal by Conner Farren to force OT. Bedrock U was led by Carter Massier, who had his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th goals of the season. Neither side is likely to budge from their current placements.

After an interesting Friday night, Saturday was a letdown in the CW. The other oddity was the start times. The Bison game was a 2:00 pm matinee. The rest all started at 5:00 CST.

GoBisons.ca posted their Friday story in the wee hours of Saturday morning, and they got something wrong. The good folks at MacEwan got that something right. That something is with respect to the Bisons’ playoff chances. Slim, yes. None, no. The Bisons are 8 points behind The Family Guys, and each team has 6 games (or 12 potential points) remaining. The Bisons hold the tie-breaker (5-4 in points in head-to-head games). So 6 wins for the Herd, and two or fewer for Mac, and the Bisons are off to the playoffs.

The Mac side of the equation is not unreasonable. Their remaining series are Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Regina. I would say their likely outcome is around 4 points in that set.

However, the Bisons’ remaining games are against Regina, Alberta, and Saskatchewan and the Bisons have yet to beat a “Tier 1" opponent this year. So doing it 4-straight to end the season seems unlikely.

Now, back to this matinee. The Bisons had productive performances from three leading players. Skylar Bruce had his 10th and 11th goals of the season, Jonny Hooker had his 14th and 15th goals of the season (and 3rd and 4th of the weekend), and Riley Stotts had a goal and two assists, giving him 6 goals and 22 assists on the season. Sophomore d-man Lucas Fry scored the winner, and his 1st as a Bison, breaking a 3-3 deadlock in the 3rd period. For the 2nd game in a row, the Bisons scored three PP goals.

Lucas Fry enjoyed his 1st goal as a Bison.

Once 5:00 p.m. hit, I switched over to the Monkeys/Mutts showdown for 1st place. Thus, I never caught this one. This win gives the T-irds a one point lead over the idle Bluegars, who have two games in hand. I favour MRU to nab 1st place. UBC has a bye then plays Sask and Calgary. MRU, meanwhile, has Calgary, Regina, and Holy Trinity. The teams are 3-3 head-to-head.

I focussed on this game once the 5:00 p.m. trilogy started. The Banjo-Mutts took charge early then coasted. Despite entering the 3rd period down 4-1, the Evil Monkeys managed just four shots in the 3rd. Over the last two years, no CW team has been able to be the “hot” item for too long. We’ll see if Sask can keep this going into the playoffs.

I was only able to catch a few minutes of this game during the intermission of the feature game. The Dinos had a decisive edge but not so one-sided as you might think. Of note, Raphael Audet was yanked from the Holy Trinity net after giving up goals on the first two shots he faced, after just 1:40 of play. Bedrock U is stranded on a 3rd place island right now, and are just getting primed for a road playoff series, possibly in Edmontown against the Evil Monkeys.

Saskatchewan with the inside track to finish 1st in their division after sweeping the Bears. An impressive 4–1 win for the Huskies tonight…shots 38-21.

That is going to be another great playoff series in the East Division. Alberta has a high octane offense and the Huskies have the edge in goaltending.
