2024-25 James Norris Memorial Trophy finalists: Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, Zach Werenski

he's a special player. Hughes is better.
well some say Hughes is better, some say Makar is better

I’d take Makar over Hughes in a heart beat… but that’s me. I know tons of people would do the same too .. and tons would take Hughes over Makar I’d imagine

Fun to have exciting dmen in the game nowadays. I love the skilled high offensive game of many young dmen in the league

The Norris trophy will go back and forth Makar/Hughes as winners probably for many years I feel.

I think Makar is more exciting but Hughes is better

not a huge difference at all at this point

Makar will win it this year, rightfully so

Jake Sanderson robbed. Watch the snake play fools.
Jake getting saddled with Hamonic ruined any hope of a Norris unfortunately.

I don't think he'll put up the offensive numbers that Norris winners get. I do think he is absolutely a top 5 d-man in the league though.

I think the Hughes vs Makar battle is a 1A vs 1B type situation. Even then, I'm willing to admit that Makar is so good that Hughes may just be the runner-up. Either way, when someone else starts actively shitting on Hughes and starts bringing up PK stats and deployment, that's when the argument gets incredibly stupid really quickly. These are the two clear-cut best defensemen in the league and any argument to the contrary is pure foolishness.

Check the nonsense, people.

i can’t wait for the makar wins the norris thread where a certain poster will completely ignore his favourite player’s achievement and destroy the thread by volume posting about quinn hughes for no reason

Hughes will zone start up at the podium and take the award first anyway

To me this is clearly Makar > Werenski > Hughes (in terms of who should get votes).

Werenski and Hughes are more important to their teams' success (just look at them on the ice vs not and whether or not they rely on any teammates at all), but the Norris isnt which defenseman is most valuable to their team or who the best defenseman in the league is, its who had the best season and thats Makar.

Firmly believe if Hughes didnt get injured he wins this but he missed a bunch and then played hurt (and still somehow took over games, albeit less often). But being available is part of being good and Makar played at the highest level for the longest time this season and deserves his 2nd Norris, regardless of if hes the best defenseman in the league or not.

Theres obviously Avs fans that get touchy if Hughes is mentioned positively and there are Canucks fans who do so the other way. Wont speak on the Avs fans but as a Nucks fan theres no need for us to justify how great Hughes is, we know hes a Hart level player and there are few guys as important to their team as he is. Just be happy we got him. Hughes is the best defenseman in the league and Im ecstatic that hes the captain of my team, but he missed too much time to get the Norris, Makar should get it. Id like to see Hughes get some Hart votes though for sure. Also excited to see what he adds to his game. Every criticism of him hes fixed. Bad defensively? Came back and dominated it. Couldnt shoot? Came into this year with a completely new shot and approach to getting open shooting lanes.

Dahlin is the actual best defenseman in the league but these guys aren't too bad either. I feel like Werenski should win this.

It is not up for debate that Hughes gets the easiest minutes of the three.
And yes, the stat does punish players who play lots of minutes but don't necessarily score during them. That's whole point of the stat. It controls for players like Hughes who play lots of minutes, gets favorable deployment, and shows how efficient/effective/offensively dominant the player is relative to peers.

I'm no longer interested in this conversation. But I do look forward to his upcoming turn in the barrel when Vancouver fans/media pivot from hilariously overrated him to demonizing him for made-up reasons.
Its not for debate because you said so? Hughes won Norris last year so that should end all discussions regarding him not being a top dman.

Colorado scored 6th most goals this year. Columbus was 8th. Vancouver was 23rd.

Werenski led his team in scoring by 12 points and missed 1 game. Makar was 2nd in team scoring, trailing by 24 pts and missing 2 games. Hughes led his team in scoring by 26 pts while missing 14 games.

Canucks highest scoring forward had 50 pts. Columbus’ had 74 and Avs had 116.
You are making it complicated for the people that are saying Werenski had less offensive help than Hughes.

Dahlin is the actual best defenseman in the league but these guys aren't too bad either. I feel like Werenski should win this.

The problem with Dahlin is he has to back it up in successive seasons

22/23 Dahlin is elite and I think he finished 6th in Norris voting, and he should have been higher.
But then he doesn’t back it up, and finishes 16th and his underlying play is good but not great like the year before

So then he has a great season again this year and gets recognition but he needs to do this again next season and he’ll be a finalist or win

What did he finish this year? .. I haven't seen complete list
