Friedman said, "Don't underestimate how happy they are with Duechene. He's another guy they're going to want to try and take care of."

I personally want them to pull it off, but I don't see it with the money. It's a shame they can't push it off to 2026 when they have a boatload of cap space.

I don't agree that Robertson is gone ... I think it's going to be Marchment, but I don't know if that opens enough money to keep Duchene.

Still a chance the Cap goes higher than what was projected. They were talking about that being a possibility in the aftermath of the 3-year projection

True, but you're probably taking a couple million max. It wouldn't be enough to make Dallas' cap situation go away.

I'm not complaining for what it's worth. I think they made the best move possible, and it's looking like a single season of cap tightness .... for a life time of pant tightness for Rantanen.

yeah...marchment/duchene/robertson/harley all coming due...tough

If I count right we are almost at 89mil for next season. Considering that the cap limit 95.5mil we have only about 7 mil for signing Benn/Duchene/Granlund. Benn is probably 5 mil minimum so we are losing both Duchene and Granlund arent we ?

I don't think we should be overly attached to Benn. He's been massively overpaid for years, so hopefully he takes a discount if he wants to stay. Duchene should easily be the priority.

I hope Nill agrees.

I'm pretty sure Granlund was always supposed to be a rental.

Give Benn a 3 year deal, 2 mill next year with bonuses then 4 the following 2 seasons. The cap continuing to rise IMO mitigates risk

I actually think we should be the exact opposite. #14 is the glue that keeps this team together- this has been echoed by Nill, DeBoer, and every single player that's walked in and out of the dressing room over the years.

I'm confident we have other guys that can step up, I don't think good leadership is that hard of a quality to replace. Keep in mind there are a lot of good leaders in the NHL and probably in our current locker room aswell.

I'd love to bring Benn back but I hope it won't be on the expense of Duchene.

Benn is never leaving that how it is. I dont think he will get ultra team friendly contract but we will see.

I’d be willing to wager one of the biggest reasons why Duchene came back to play for this organization at a massive discount is because of the locker room culture. Listen to any Duchene interview and he will talk about competing for the guys like Jamie and Tyler.

Its okay if you dont understand this. Not bringing back your captain of 12+ years signals a culture shift whether you’re willing to recognize that or not.

All of this

Feels like you are quite defensive here due to the bolded, but maybe I'm misunderstanding the tone?

I never said that letting Benn walk wouldn't lead to a major change in the lockeroom, obviously it would. Personally I think it's still going to be fine, it's a natural thing that teams go through all the time and one we will go through soon enough. I don't get the impression that the locker room would become much worse if Benn leaves and we'll have others who step up, but it's possible I'm wrong on that. We both base our opinions on essentially our gut feeling.

Benn is not gonna let his next contract keep duchene from coming back . I honestly think he would go league min to try and win a cup with the stars .

No offense but your opinion is vibes driven, not mine.

I wouldn’t have this opinion if there weren’t dozens of interviews over the years that support it. It gets emphasized all the time.

This kind of culture is sought after in the hockey world. Buffalo, Montreal, and a lot of the perennial bottom dwellers of the past decade+ would kill for it. You can’t just piece together a few “leaders” and the light immediately turns on- see the current failure in Chicago.

I think you are basing your option a gut feeling and everyone else is basing it off comments of other players. Don’t know which is correct, but I would err on the side of Benn. He does strike me as a guy that will take a discount. The team is close to a championship and players will do things short term to win.
