don't we all.
Dobson, would cost a fortunate to trade for, then you're still giving him 7-8m a year.
Gudas, would be a good get, if we could actually pry him away from the Ducks
I know Dobson is a pipe dream. Gudas would be great if Anaheim decides to trade him. I’m sure he’d want to come here and try to win a cup. Only has 1 year left on his contract and is not winning shit with the ducks.

If we don't have Harley and Heiskanen but everyone else on this d-core, yes it would absolutely be a hail Mary.
It doesn't have to be Karlsson specifically. But we badly need an actual top 4 RD, one who doesn't suck with the puck on their stick would be a plus.
Based on Nill's response it means if they are adding another defenseman it's more bottom pairing fodder.

We can't go into the PO and realistic expect to win with 5 bottom pairing d-men to rotate through.
(Lyubushkin, Ceci, Bichsel, Smith, Dumba).
Adding a 6th (Petry, Dumoulin, Trouba, Jokiharju, Clifton, Martinez, Murphy, Ristolainen, Johnson, Savard, Ruuta, etc) doesn't do anything either.

I don't particularly want Karlsson, but there is no Top4 guys available(that we know of) that don't have high salaries and term.
Of the ones rumored to be available he should be the cheapest to acquire and has the shortest term.

You can insulate him with Lindell, much like Klingberg was, to cover up some of his warts.
I think you're overselling the problems on defense when they're healthy. Three of the top four are Miro, Harley, and Lindell. Yeah, maybe the next five are guys better suited in a bottom pairing role right now. This means the worst thing you can say about the defense is their #4 guy is playing something like three minutes more a night than you'd ideally prefer. We're talking a handful of shifts each game. It's not a crisis.

It's certainly not a crisis dictating chasing after a 35 year old guy who'd also be the top cap hit on your team. Adding Karlsson would be a nice luxury to have, but I don't see it as some line in the sand dictating whether the Stars are serious about being contenders.

Dallas sits at 2nd in GAA/gm, right behind Winnipeg. Sounds great and yes when healthy having a top 3 of Miro/Harley/Lindell is good, but what happens if one of them goes down? What happens in the Conference/Stanley Cup finals after they've been playing 25+ mins every other night for over a month?

I'm hoping for a top 4 D because I do think it is a need, not a want. But I'm not getting my hopes up with what's out there and what Nill/ownership are willing give up.

I agree with this, which is why I think Gudas should be the target, even if we do a small overpay to pry him from Anaheim. Won't break the bank and the dude is a playoff gamer who eats big playoff minutes. And an overpay for him won't be the same over payment that a Dobson or Jones would take. I feel like after watching 4 Nations and seeing guys like Tkachuk and Bennett, it never hurts to have big game psychos in that kind of situation. He's like like your perfect '4D' who steps up to being a legit 3D. Like look at this guy

I'm not on the Gudas train. I wouldn't hate it, but I see him as another bottom pair defender ala Dumoulin/Petry/etc which we already have enough of. I think that is the mold of player we will ultimately acquire, unfortunately.

You're stuck on it being Karlsson. It doesn't need to be Karlsson.
It needs to be a top4.
Karlsson should just be the easiest/cheapest to make work.

Peak Klingberg, lindell and Heiskanen weren't good enough to get the team anywhere outside of the fluke covid bubble.

Changing klingberg for Harley might end up being an improvement overall, but when they have to play 27+minutes a night to shelter the squad of bottom 6 garbage we're turning out throughout the rest of the roster, they'll fall apart of they can survive the mistakes of the others
Add in there's almost no chance Heiskanen is 100%

I think you're implying something greater than what is needed when you say top 4. They don't need a top 4. They just need a #4, and those guys, even on Cup team, don't have to be anything special.

sure, they need a Tanev or better, not a Ceci, Lyubushkin, Dumba, Smith, Dumoulin, Trouba, etc

Stank looked great in the playoffs. He is small but whatever line he was on really benefitted from his motor and tenacity.

This is all good fun but Blumel on the top line and Bichsel on the 4th line is just pure madness.
Blumel has 61 goals in his last 122 games in the AHL,
including playoffs. His skill set is top six, not checking line.
He's done marinating. They should play him or trade him.

Have not watched him much lately but with St Louis talking about trading people. What about Faulk.
6.5m and 2yrs remaining term, he's been ok for the most part.
I vote for Parayko
I mean yeah, but then you're getting into the Jones conversation again.
He's 6.5m for 5yrs
He'd also cost quite a bit to acquire.
So you're trading paying for retention vs actual assets
If he's available, he'd be the best target, in terms of actual playing ability but doesn't seem realistic.

5mins after the deadline passes. Nill at his Press Conference

"I like where we're at, plus, we're getting Seguin back, and that's a great deadline pickup. And Heiskanen will be back and that is the best player any team could hope to add at the deadline this year. And we got both for free."

Us winning games and Dumba earning more love from the coach after Heiskanen went down was probably the worst thing that could have happened

I fear we will be looking for a Brendan Smith replacement, rather than a Dumba replacement

Not really sure what Dumba has done to get praise other than getting his ass kicked from sticking up for Bichsel.

I'm gonna chalk last night up to some weird anomaly. But his ice time average hasn't increased much since Heiskanen went down.
NYI he was in the box for a lot of, but he played only 14 again NJ, he's gotten about 1min more than his season average the last few games, and in a few of those Lyubushkin missed time to injuries.
