I mean you COULD just not offer Benn a contract and name Wyatt captain I know this won't happen
I feel like that would be just as disrespectful, if not more, than what Nieuwy did to Modano. Letting Benn walk would sour me as a fan.

I doubt Benn will ask for something that will hurt this team moving forward. But then again, who knows.

I would assume at this point Benn wants to win. Getting a guy like Dobson improves those chances, so basically if Benn wants to win and stay he'll have to wait until everyone is signed and go from there. I wouldn't be surprised to see him sign the same contract as Duchene. But, who knows at this point.

Also, I'm sure if Nill is looking to trade for Dobson that he would have an idea of what kind of contract Dobson is asking for.

Dallasman posted the 👀. So, I will expect Dobson until it is no longer possible.

I usually take this as meaning Nill is kicking the tires and looking into it, as opposed to a deal being imminent.

Generally it seems like Nill is exploring every possible option at acquiring a legit top 4 RHD. The prices have obviously been extremely high and balked at, as evidenced by no deals (not just by Nill but anyone) being made.

What is Benn worth if he puts up another 50-60 point season?

He could probably still get around a 7M AAV on the open market.

My best guess is something around 5.5M per for 3 years. I think the term will really depend on what Benn is thinking in terms of when he plans to retire.

Oof, hope he takes the Duchene discount in that case. He has been overpaid for quite a few years now.

with benn a lot of it depends on length of contract and conditions. It is a 35+ contract for benn, id think if he wants to take a hometown discount it would be around 3.5x3 and if he were to take it to fa it would be a 5milx2.

they should be willing to give up stankoven for dobson. He is a 70 point scoring 25 y/o rd lol

If Benn really wants a cup then he should take a bigger pay cut than that.

Sadly Pavelski went 5.5 and then 3.5 with bonuses to make it 5.5. Hopefully Benn isn't as greedy. Since Joe was greedy he never got a Cup, Benn can go lower and secure a cup ;)

I mean, Benn has been a Star for 16 seasons. When they gave him his big extension, they made him the fourth highest paid player in the league. Is not offering him a contract more disrespectful than offering him a low number contract?

So I hear Dobson wants lots of money and he is RFA at the end of this year, correct?

If we trade for him, he isn't a rental, so don't we have to move someone with money out to bring him in? Or do we just worry about that in the offseason?

I just don't see how we can afford to move Mav or Stank. They are cheap talent and with the contracts we have and WJs upcoming raise, that just seems too valuable to move.

I admit I am not as well versed in our cap situation as many of you but I understand we won't have a lot of cap space over the next few years without some changes.
I think if you can add a good player, you do. Worry about the money later. This team has a number of UFAs upcoming.

Well Dallas shouldn’t be offering a low number to the point it’s an insult. Benn is still a good player and an even better leader (speaking from all reports from teammates and team personnel etc).

He should still be offered a fair deal with some sort of discount/bonus heavy.

Even at 50% retention that Jones contract is ugly no matter how you slice it toward the tail end. With Dobson at least you have a chance to negotiate terms yourself and he's 5 years younger. And the whole "better at hockey" thing.

Let the Avs have Jones IMO.

I mean, if Jones is cheap and can retain then that’s fine. We wouldn’t have to trade away one of our young promising players for him. Dobson will be pricey.

I'm leaning towards the same position as you. For me, Jones is currently the last man on my list of puckmoving RD's that I want, due to his contract.

Dobson
Karlsson (assuming he's available)
Jones

I might be missing someone

I wonder how serious this Dobson speculation/rumor is. Is it as simple as the Stars management checking base with the Isles about Dobson, or are actual negotiations taking place.

Looking at next years roster we have roughly 70.6M with everyone who's already signed and Suter's buyout.

That's 6 D, 2 goalies and 7 forwards

The Salary cap next year is 92.4

So we have roughly 22M to sign Wyatt, Bourque and Benn. With those 3 that only gives us 10 forwards. Unless Duchene signs the same deal, i don't know if he will be back.

I'm assuming Dobson will want around 7-8M which is really going to make things difficult, especially if we traded one of Stank or Bourque who are on cheaper deals. Stank is still on his ELC next season, which would really help us.

Obviously, we would need to move Dumba to fit Dobson or even Jones, so that would help alittle. Would be nice to keep Bischel since he still has two more seasons after this year on his ELC.

Nill and co are definitely good with the cap, but acquiring one of the Dman like Dobson or Jones is going to next year interesting, but that's next years problem.

Unless they can make a trade of Robertson for Dobson then I think Jones is the better way to go. They should be able to make that trade without giving up the 3 young guys on roster. If there is no retention.
