Yeah, I dont get the cynicism as this is how you grow the game. If the NHL consistently continues to host these tournaments they are going to grow in prestige and hype. And nothing inspires future nhlers and fans more than watching their country compete.

For example: even the most casual Swedish hockey fans become passionate fans when Tre Kronor played in the old best-on-best olympic games. I'm sure that hold true for North Americans aswell (especially Canadians).

And the players obviously care as playing for their national team is what they grew up dreaming of.
Might be just my being American, nobody I played with, or knew, dreamed of winning a gold medal, a Stanley cup absolutely.

I'd expect it to be reversed for European countries.

That is probably why we have such different views on this. From the outside looking in it seems to me Americans (as a country) only get excited for the Summer Olympics when it comes to international competition. Makes sense as most of your popular sports have limited international popularity and overwhelming US dominance (though basketball has been growing internationally).

But I do think these tournaments might beneficial (in the long run) in increasing the popularity of the sport in the US aswell. For example: soccer seems to be steadily growing in the US and I understand there is a boost in popularity everytime the US makes it to a world cup.

I love Dobson in these Magical Christmas Land trades, but when was the last time Dallas' pro scouts campaigned for Nill to trade for a young, talented player instead of a hockey Charles Bronson type?

Still don't quite understand why he was so disliked by his former teams. He's a fine depth forward.

1st round pick that produces 20 points after putting up 131 in juniors. Wouldn't you be mad?
Well that's probably because most fans have unreasonable expectations for the type of players selected late in the 1st round.

Sam Steel, 392 NHL games and 134 points.

I mean i wasn't mad about Dickinson or Faksa as players. Didn't like Faksas contract but as a player he was fine.

Well plenty of people were. Plus neither of those guys even sniffed anywhere near 100 points in juniors nevermind 130. When a player does that and then can't produce in the NHL questions get asked and fans get angry. It makes sense.

Well that's probably because most fans have unreasonable expectations for the type of players selected late in the 1st round.

Now do a list of 1st round picks that produced 100+ points in D+1 in juniors and the scales will tilt. Fans weren't unrealistic to expect someone who was dominating juniors to come into the NHL and produce points.

Glad to keep Steel around, he fits in well as a swiss army knife. AAV is fine but any more would be starting to push it.

Steel is not a prototypical bottom 6 player either. He's small, not an elite skater (he's pretty good, though), and not physical at all. I'm sure there aren't a ton of coaches willing to use him in a defensive-first depth role due to these factors.

Fortunately for Steel, he fits into PDB's system almost perfectly. He's been a fantastic 4th line energy guy who can play every role and slot in anywhere in a pinch.
